The Big 12 Conference on Tuesday announced a $50,000 fine for the University of Colorado after fans yelled anti-Mormon chants and expletives directed at the Brigham Young University team, officials said.

The chants, which occurred during Saturday's University of Colorado Boulder football game in which BYU won 24-21, were condemned by the conference and university officials.

"Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference," Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement. "While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday's game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."

Colorado Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz and Athletic Director Rick George issued a statement on the matter.

"The University of Colorado Boulder strongly condemns the use of expletives and religious slurs by individuals in the stands during the recent football game against BYU," it read. "Such behavior is deeply disappointing and does not reflect the values of respect, inclusion and integrity we expect of our campus community."

Brigham Young University is a faith-based Utah university that was founded and supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders apologized on behalf of the university and athletic department for the conduct of the fans.

"That's not indicative of who we are. Our student body, our kids are phenomenal," Sanders said at the end of a media appearance Tuesday.

Sanders suggested that those who made the chants were likely young and intoxicated.

"BYU, we love you, we appreciate you and we support you," Sanders said.

It's not the first time that anti-Mormon chants were directed at BYU during crowds at college games.
