Nate Bargatze is clarifying his intentions with his Emmys charity bit
The comedian, 46, revealed on his Nateland podcast that he "wasn't trying to put anybody on the spot" when he gave winner speeches a time limit during the Sept. 14 awards show

Nate Bargatze "wasn't trying to put anybody on the spot" with his Emmys charity bit.
The 2025 Emmy Awards host, 46, revealed on the Wednesday, Sept. 24 episode of his Nateland podcast that, while some viewers weren't thrilled with one aspect of his hosting gig, he had no "ill intent" while planning it out.
On Sept. 14, the stand-up comedian kicked off the award show by announcing he was prepared to donate $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club. But award winners were given a 45-second time limit to deliver their speeches, and he'd deduct $1,000 for every second they went over. While the end-of-show numbers were in the negatives, Bargatze ended up donating $250,000 of his own money to the charity — while CBS pitched in $100,000 to bring the total donation to $350,000.
Still, as Bargatze shared, some "reviews did not like the Boys & Girls Club thing," despite it coming from "a real place of heart."
"In my head, I wasn't trying to put anybody on the spot, I wasn't trying to make someone donate money. But in my head, I kind of thought like, make it fun," Bargatze said.
"We're not using the charity as a tool. They ask you to come up with a way to make everyone go shorter [on their speeches]. Comics I don't think are good to ask [of] that because I will really try to find a solution," he added, noting that CBS was "very happy" with the bit. "I think people at home were very happy, they watched it. I wasn't trying to overshadow any of their speeches."

As Bargatze explained on his podcast, he thought the "shows that won" — or Netflix or Apple — would donate money.
"It's not like I was expecting that kid [Adolescence star Owen Cooper] to give money... In my head, I pictured it as they could [speak] long, but then be a hero. So it was like a win-win. And then the night becomes about love, and you're giving to these kids that are there and all this kind of stuff. I don't know if I just didn't explain it enough in the room," he said. "I had it in my head one way, it kind of came out another way. But the reasoning was there."
"I wasn't gonna give that money at the end. I wasn't thinking I was gonna have to. But the way it went, I was like, I can't— I'm not gonna not."
Despite how some viewed the charity timer, the comedian revealed that the Boys & Girls Club thought the move was "awesome" and was "pumped" about it.
"There was no ill will. I was trying to have a very giving night. I thought if someone was giving these long speeches, they'd be like, 'Netflix is going to cover my overage.' In hindsight, I thought... I think I could've explained it more, to be honest," he said.
Of course, at the end of the Emmys ceremony this month, Bargatze shared that the charity sum had gone into the red, calling the number "embarrassing." The organization, which ultimately received $350,000 between Brzgatze and CBS, later thanked the host for his efforts. "Saying thank you in 45 seconds or less just won't do," the charity wrote on X after the show.
"From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU, @natebargatze, for including the Club Kids in such an unforgettable night. Your generosity and jokes made it magic; and we're beyond grateful to be part of it."
