In September 2023, Kelce and Swift made their relationship public; two years later, on Aug. 26, 2025, they announced their engagement with an Instagram post

Kayla Nicole is stepping out for her first public appearance since her ex-boyfriend, Travis Kelce, announced his engagement to Taylor Swift.

PEOPLE caught up with the podcaster at the House of Champion during New York Fashion Week on Thursday, Sept. 11.

The on-air reporter and Kansas City Chiefs tight end began dating in 2017 and were in an on-again, off-again relationship for five years.

Last month, Swift and Kelce, both 35, announced their engagement on Instagram after two years of dating, sharing photos from the proposal with the caption, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married."

The couple's big news came nearly two years after they took their romance public, when Swift was first spotted cheering Kelce on at a Kansas City Chiefs game in September 2023, over a year after he and Nicole split up.

Nicole tells PEOPLE that the biggest lesson she's learned about herself this past year is that "the opinions of others are only as big as you make them."

"So if I don't allow it to affect me, it simply won't," she tells PEOPLE. "You know what I mean? Sometimes on social media, we think that it's the whole world, and it's really not."

"It's an app with a couple of 100,000 million people, but you're in control of the narrative, honestly, and if something is holding you, bogging you down, turn it off," Nicole continues. "Delete the app, log off. That's my biggest advice"

Following Kelce and Swift's engagement announcement in August, Nicole reposted a video to her Instagram Stories of actress Tracee Ellis Ross discussing why she chooses "joy."

"I think joy is different from happiness," Ross said in the clip. "Happiness is something you can get at 7-Eleven, and joy is something that you earn and work for and takes practice."

While discussing the clip with PEOPLE on Thursday, Nicole says, "Gosh, I was reading a book maybe years ago now, but basically the idea is that happiness is fleeting."

"Joy is something that's deep and eternal, and it's a choice every day, and it resonates with me because it's something that I try to do in my life on a regular basis," she says.

Since her split from Kelce in 2022, Nicole has made an effort to "move forward" with her life, a decision that included unfollowing friends Brittany and Patrick Mahomes on Instagram.

"I do think it's important to publicly address this because I did publicly unfollow people," Nicole previously told PEOPLE. "The reality is I know these people in real life. And so, in real life, I've communicated to these people why I've had to publicly make the decisions that I made."

She regularly discusses relationships on her podcast, The Pre-Game, often referencing her own experiences with dating. In April, the influencer admitted that she's yet to experience romance akin to the "fairytale" stories told in Disney movies.

"I was raised to believe that a man and woman, if they are in a relationship, if they are married, you are only intended to be with each other," she explained. "You make this agreement, you make this promise to one another and you hold each other accountable."
