The Miami Dolphins named their six captains on Monday ahead of the start of the NFL season. For the first time in three years, Tyreek Hill wasn't one of them.

Hill, who was traded to the Dolphins in 2022 after six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, had been a captain for the past three seasons he was in Miami. But things between Hill and the team seem to have soured in the months since Hill said that he wanted "out" in January.

On Monday, Hill was officially left off the captains list. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has been a team captain since his third season (also in 2022), is once again leading the team.

Center Aaron Brewer, fullback Alex Ingold, defensive tackle Zach Sieler and linebackers Jordyn Brooks and Bradley Chubb have also been named as 2025 captains. Ingold will be marking his third seasons as a Miami captain, while Sieler was a captain last year as well.

Hill has spent the past several months walking back his comments from January: By February, he had apologized to Tagovailoa and the team, saying that he wanted to "fully take it back" and said that he was "taking accountability" for his words.

The comments, which were immediately after the Dolphin's season-ending loss to the New York Jets, had Hill expressing his desire to get out of Miami and to a more competitive team.

"I'm opening the door. I'm out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day I gotta do what's best for my career because I'm too much of a competitor to be just out there," Hill said at the time.

But even after saying he was "opening the door," Dolphins general manager Chris Grier told reporters that Hill never actually requested a trade. Hill, who is entering the second year of a three-year, $90 million contract, ended up staying with the team.

The 31-year-old receiver has since said that his comments were made out of "frustration," and has spent the past several months trying to make it up to his team. In May, Hill said that he was aiming for a 2,000-yard season after his disappointing 2024, and wants to prove to his team that he's still "one of them."

Tagovailoa confirmed to reporters in July that Hill has been working to repair his relationship with the team.

"When you say something like that, you don't just come back with, 'My bad.' You gotta work that relationship up. He is working on himself," Tagovailoa said.

Hill has extending that commitment to being more present in team meetings: The receiver told reporters in early August that he's started taking notes for the first time in his career, and is finally understanding the offensive scheme. He also said that Tagovailoa's comments were "needed."

"He's obviously the leader of our team," Hill said at the time. "He sets the standard. So I'm just trying to be the best teammate, the best version of myself for this team I can be, man. Every day. Showing up for meetings, coming out here every day busting my tail in practice, I think it's important."
