Actor Doug Jones, known for his roles in The Shape of Water, Hocus Pocus, and Star Trek: Discovery, has a message for fans after accidentally alarming his Instagram followers.

On September 1, Jones uploaded a black and white picture of himself in celebration of Labor Day on Instagram.

"'Come to Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' ~ Matthew 11:28 #happylaborday Photo by @beepsmith," read the caption of the post.

Several fans flocked to the post's comments section to share that they thought Jones had died because of the nature of his post.

"Oh my god what a scare, I thought you died with that black and white image," wrote a commenter.

"Good lord I almost had a heart attack," added another.

"I'm glad to see we're all agreed that a black and white photo of a beloved celebrity is a heart attack," shared a third person.

"You can't just... with the photo... and a bible verse... and not expect us to... it was like a jump scare... I had to take a second. Good grief! I was worried!!!" commented a fan.

"I GOT SO SCARED IM SO GLAD YOURE OKAY," chimed in a fifth person.

Jones was quick to clear up his fans' concerns in a September 2 Instagram post. The upload featured a recent picture of him holding two signs that read, "See? I'm alive!! In full color!"

"Regarding yesterday's Labor Day post - I keep forgetting that at my age, a black & white artsy photo, holding a flower, with a Bible verse could give some of you a scare. So sorry As Mark Twain once said, 'Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.' #dougjones #stillalive," wrote the actor in the post's caption.

Several commenters shared they appreciated Jones' update.

"I'm so happy you're not dead. Just in general, but especially this time," wrote a commenter.

"Holy thanks for clearing that up, mate! Almost had a heart attack!" added another.

"Aha, you can't scare people like that, Doug!" shared a different person.

Doug Jones Discussed Being in 'Star Trek' in a January 2025 Interview

Jones, who was once a contortionist, has been in the entertainment industry for over three decades. The 65-year-old has a successful career playing creatures, specifically in several Guillermo Del Toro movies.

One of his most recent projects was the Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery, which aired from 2017 to 2024. His character, Kelpien Ambassador Saru, became a fan-favorite in the science fiction franchise.

During a January 2025 interview on Star Trek stars Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating's podcast, The D-Con Chamber, Jones said he was sought out to play Saru, much to his surprise.

In addition, Jones said he wanted Saru "to be different" than the other non-humans he had played throughout his prolific career. He shared that having to wear "heel-less high heels" for Saru's hoof-like feet helped him come up with the character's fluid walking style. Jones suggested that Saru's specific gait informed the character.
