I expect to see the existence of extraterrestrial life confirmed within the next few years. When it happens, put down your phone, look up from your work, walk away from your computer and let the moment sink in. Then we can go back to arguing about pronouns and tariffs. It looks increasingly likely that we will find alien life. The discovery announced this week by Nikku Madhusudhan and his colleagues at Cambridge University of what looks suspiciously like a 'biosignature' of life in the atmosphere of a planet called K2-18b orbiting a star 124 light-years away, may prove to be a key moment in the history of human understanding.
