Robert Mueller, who served as a special counsel to determine if the Russian government interfered to help then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease four years ago, the New York Times reported on Aug. 31.

The Times, citing a Mueller family statement, reported that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in the summer of 2021.

"He retired from the practice of law at the end of that year," the statement said, according to the Times. "He taught at his law school alma mater during the fall of both 2021 and 2022, and he retired at the end of 2022. His family asks that his privacy be respected."

Former Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller is pictured testifying during a House Intelligence Committee hearing.

The investigation ultimately concluded that Russia had interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump but that there was no evidence that anyone associated with the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government.

On Aug. 22, the Department of Justice sent a portion of the files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died by suicide in 2019 in a New York federal prison, to the House Oversight Committee in response to a subpoena issued by the committee.

Mueller is one of several former top federal law enforcement officials — including James Comey, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, William Barr, and Jeff Sessions — who have been subpoenaed to testify as part of its inquiry into the federal government's handling of the investigations.

The statement from the family to the New York Times came days before he was slated to testify before the House Oversight Committee about investigations and prosecutions. Mueller was supposed to testify on Sept. 2, according to the Times.

The committee, the Times reported, wanted to ask Mueller about the FBI's handling of the Epstein investigation when he served as its director from 2001 to 2013.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Monday leader Kim Jong Un inspected a new weapons factory that's key to his plan to accelerate mass production of missiles in a weekend visit before he departs for a major military parade in China.

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency did not disclose the location of the factory Kim visited Sunday, but it may be in Jagang province, a hub of the country's munitions industry that borders China.

Both China and North Korea confirmed last week that Kim will make his first visit to China in six years to attend a military parade in Beijing on Wednesday, which marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and China's resistance against Japanese wartime aggression.

The 26 foreign leaders invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping also include Russia's Vladimir Putin, who has received major wartime support from Kim in his invasion of Ukraine, making the Beijing event a show of three-way alignment against U.S. efforts to strengthen security cooperation with South Korea and Japan.

South Korean media speculated Kim could depart for China by train sometime Monday, pointing to heightened security measures at the Chinese border town of Dandong, where rail traffic was reportedly halted and hotels stopped receiving foreign guests.

KCNA said the factory had assembly lines to speed missile production and reported that Kim praised scientists and workers and ratified plans for improvement.

South Korean officials say Kim has pushed to accelerate munitions production as he supplies Russia with large quantities of military equipment, including artillery and ballistic missiles. Kim has also sent thousands of troops since last fall to fight alongside Russian forces against Ukraine, as he prioritizes Moscow as part of a foreign policy aimed at expanding ties with nations confronting the United States.

Since aligning with Russia, North Korea has become more vocal in international affairs beyond the Korean Peninsula, issuing diplomatic statements on conflicts in the Middle East and in the Taiwan Strait, while portraying itself as a part of a united front against Washington. Some experts say Kim's presence at the multilateral event in Beijing is part of efforts to develop partnerships with other nations close to China and Russia.

China remains North Korea's largest trade partner and economic lifeline, and Kim's attendance at the Beijing military parade is also seen as an attempt to showcase ties with a major ally and boost leverage ahead of a possible resumption of negotiations with Washington.

Kim met U.S. President Donald Trump three times during Trump's first term, but their diplomacy never recovered from their collapsed second summit in 2019 in Vietnam, where the U.S. rejected North Korea's demands for major sanctions relief in exchange for partial steps toward denuclearization.

Chad Murphy, Akron Beacon Journal August 31, 2025 at 5:01 AM

For more than 100 years, Geauga Lake in Aurora, Ohio, was an amusement park destination.

From its earliest days in the late 19th century, when Geauga Lake was just a train stop with picnic tables and boats to rent, the park grew. Its first ride was a steam-powered carousel, added in 1889. Its first roller coaster didn't come until 1925 with the Big Dipper, which entertained thrill-seekers until the park closed down.

And in 2001, Geauga Lake absorbed the neighboring Sea World, when the latter closed its Ohio park. That made Geauga Lake the largest theme park in the world by area at the time, covering some 700 acres on both sides of the lake.

Less than a decade later, the fun was over.

In 2007, the park shut down after rounds of ownership changes and park expansion. Now, what's left of Geauga Lake Park may return to its 19th-century roots. The City of Aurora has purchased the former Geauga Lake and Sea World land, with the intent of making it a public park.

Here's a look back at the history of Geauga Lake, as reported in previous Beacon Journal articles.

Looking back at Geauga Lake Park in Ohio; its first roller coaster, the Big Dipper, debuted in 1925

Here's a brief history of Geauga Lake:

1887: The northeast side of Geauga Lake is first called Picnic Lake or Giles Pond, a place where visitors camped, went fishing or picnicked.

1889: The park's first ride is added, a steam-powered carousel.

1925: Geauga Lake's first roller coaster is built. The Big Dipper was the largest wooden roller coaster built at the time, at 2,800 feet long and a height of 65 feet.

1939: A dance hall and ballroom are built.

1969: Funtime Inc. purchases the park.

1977: The Double Loop — Ohio's first looping steel coaster — opens.

1978: The Corkscrew steel coaster debuts.

1984: The Wave, the first pool of its kind that creates 6-foot waves, opens.

1988: The park celebrates its 100th year and welcomes the Raging Wolf Bobs wooden roller coaster.

1995: Geauga Lake is purchased by Premier Parks Inc.

1998: Premier Parks purchases Six Flags Theme Parks.

2000: Park changes name to Six Flags Ohio.

2001: Six Flags purchases SeaWorld Cleveland, renamed to Six Flags Worlds of Adventure.

2004: Six Flags sells the park to Cedar Fair, at the time the owner of Cedar Point. The name is changed back to Geauga Lake.

2005: Cedar Fair revamps the old Sea World into a water park called Wildwater Kingdom.

2007: The ride side of Geauga Lake closes.

2016: Wildwater Kingdom closes.

Los Angeles Angels left fielder Taylor Ward left in the eighth inning of the team's 3-0 victory against the Houston Astros on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Ward had his head up as he was tracking down a ball hit by Ramón Urías in the outfield before running face-first into the metal scoreboard at Daikin Park.

The outfielder walked toward the Angels' bullpen for assistance as teammates came to his aid with a towel to cover a cut he received after crashing into the screen.

Ward was carted off the field and did not return to the game.

Fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula is making another deep run at the U.S. Open and she claimed her spot in the quarterfinals Sunday with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over fellow American Ann Li in New York.

Pegula converted 6 of 9 break points and needed just 54 minutes to subdue Li, who committed 19 unforced errors while playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium for the first time.

Pegula next will face two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. Krejcikova staved off eight match points while rallying to a 1-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3 victory over upstart Taylor Townsend.

Krejcikova held a 43-37 edge in winners while needing three hours and four minutes to finish off Townsend, who was vying to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event for the first time.

Townsend dominated the first set and had a chance to close the deal in straight sets. She was leading 6-3 in a second-set tiebreaker before letting three straight match points get away.

The two women traded big hits and missed shots throughout the 25-minute tiebreaker before Krejcikova finished off the 98-minute set with a slam. Seven of Townsend's squandered match points came in the second-set tiebreaker.

Krejcikova broke Townsend's service to make it 4-2 and 5-3 in the third set before finishing off a scintillating victory that disappointed the pro-American crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

"I'm totally enjoying this crowd. Even though it's not for me, it's fine," Krejcikova said in her on-court interview. "I love the atmosphere. I love when they're cheering. They're making the match huge. It's for the Americans. It's not for me.

"I wish we had a tournament in Czech Republic and there were a lot of fans rooting for me. Maybe in a different life. Not now. I'm just enjoying. I'm having fun on court. I'm so happy I can be here. It's a huge privilege that I can play in front of such a nice crowd on Armstrong."

Krejcikova's impressive showing snuffed out the dreams of the 29-year-old Townsend, a No. 1 doubles player who is enjoying the top singles run of her career.

Townsend lost in the first round of the other three majors this year before winning her first three matches at the Billie Jean King Center. She swept No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia on Friday, two days after beating No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in straight sets and being on the receiving end of some disparaging comments about her lack of sportsmanship.

Pegula, a 2024 finalist, is more used to being on the big stage in New York.

"I've obviously kind of earned that right over the years," the 31-year-old Pegula said of playing in Ashe. "When I was younger, I never hit on Ashe, I never played on Ashe. I was always on another court, Court 17 or maybe Grandstand if I was lucky. That's definitely changed.

"Specifically here being an American, I have played a lot there now. Maybe against someone that hasn't gotten a lot of reps on that court, I think it is a little bit like a home-court advantage."

This marks the third time Pegula has advanced to at least the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. She lost to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in last season's title match and also reached the quarters in 2022.

Pegula has won just one of three matchups against Krejcikova. Pegula's victory came in the 2023 Australian Open round of 16.

On Sunday, Pegula outclassed the 25-year-old Li and was highly effective at the net by winning 12 of 15 points.

"It's a part of my game I can use as a weapon," Pegula said. "We've definitely worked on that a lot. They're really happy when I can finish a point with an overhead or a volley at the net."

Pegula won the first three games of the match while sailing through the first set. It was more of the same in the second as she won four of the first five games before finishing off the match.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies signed veteran right-hander Walker Buehler on Sunday in a bid to bolster their pitching staff for a long playoff run.

The 31-year-old Buehler, a two-time NL All-Star who helped the Los Angeles Dodgers to World Series titles in 2020 and 2024, was released by Boston Red Sox on Friday after going 7-7 with a 5.45 ERA in 23 games, 22 of which were starts.

The NL East-leading Phillies have an opening in their rotation after ace Zack Wheeler was recently lost for the season — and possibly longer — due to thoracic outlet syndrome. Buehler will be eligible to pitch in the postseason and was assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

"We're excited to have him because we think he makes us better," Phillies president Dave Dombrowski said. "We're trying to do anything we can to qualify for the postseason and then, if we make it, to do anything we can to win."

Dombrowski said Buehler would make a start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday and then start for the Phillies on Sept. 12 against Kansas City, becoming part of a six-man starting rotation.

"He's happy with the plan; we're happy with the plan," Dombrowski said.

Buehler signed a one-year, $21.05 million deal last offseason with the Red Sox and was expected to be a key member of their rotation. But he went on the injured list early in the season with a shoulder injury and never found his top form.

Boston demoted the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder from its rotation following his start Aug. 19. He made one appearance for the Red Sox out of the bullpen, allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Yankees on Aug. 24. He was released to make room for top prospect Payton Tolle.

One of Buehler's better outings this season came against the Phillies in Philadelphia on July 21 when he allowed one earned run on six hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking one. It left an impression on Dombrowski and Philadelphia's brass.

"He still has a good arm," Dombrowski said while acknowledging some struggles this season. "But we still like a lot of his stuff."

Dombrowski said Phillies officials, including manager Rob Thomson, had a good Zoom conversation with Buehler and his representatives that featured a back-and-forth with pitching coach Caleb Cotham in which the two connected.

"We think we see some things that can hopefully help him," Dombrowski said. "He's willing to work with us."

Taylor Fritz is moving on to the US Open quarterfinals.

The No. 4 seed remains as the last American competing in the men's singles tournament.

The 27-year-old earned a decisive victory over No. 21-seed Tomáš Macháč of Czechia, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, in the fourth round on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

As a result of the victory, Fritz has now won 25 of his last 30 matches, the most of any player on the men's tour since the conclusion of the French Open in early June.

Fritz will play the winner of Novak Djokovic or German Jan-Lennard Struff.

Fritz finds himself just two wins away from reaching the US Open finals for a second straight year. He finished as the 2024 runner-up behind Jannik Sinner. Sinner also remains in the tournament and will have an opportunity to qualify for the quarterfinals on Monday.

This will be the sixth consecutive Grand Slam event to feature at least one American male in the quarterfinal round. That is the longest such streak since another run of six straight events from the 2002 US Open to the 2004 Australian Open, according to ESPN.

Carlos Alcaraz triumphed in a first-set tiebreaker and posted another straight-sets victory Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in New York.

The Spanish star and No. 2 seed defeated France's Arthur Rinderknech 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4. He'll meet Czech 20th seed Jiri Lehecka in the quarters after Lehecka topped Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (4), 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia secured his 14th U.S. Open quarterfinal with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win over Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. The four-time U.S. Open champ has a showdown Tuesday with No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz, who's in the quarterfinals for the third year in a row thanks to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 triumph over No. 21 Tomas Machac of Czechia.

Alcaraz, at 22 years and three months old, became the youngest man to reach his 13th Grand Slam quarterfinal, according to the ATP Tour. He surpassed Boris Becker's previous mark, as Becker was six months older when he notched quarterfinal bid No. 13.

Alcaraz also remained spotless in his U.S. Open run, having won all 12 sets he's played. Alcaraz lost just four games in his second-round rout and six games in the third round.

The streak was in jeopardy early Sunday, as neither Alcaraz nor Rinderknech held serve throughout the first set. Rinderknech moved ahead 2-1 in the tiebreaker before Alcaraz rattled off the next five points and eased to victory.

"At the beginning of the first set, we were tight. We didn't have break points in the first set, but it didn't mean we were serving good, because the percentage was really bad from both," Alcaraz said in his post-match interview. "I just (found) a good rhythm, a good position for the returns ... I tried to make the most of the opportunities that he gave me, but there weren't too many."

Alcaraz did win a whopping 45 of 53 first-service points (84.9 percent) and capitalized when his opponent went to his second serve. Alcaraz won 20 of 38 second-return points (52.6 percent).

He hit 36 winners to just 11 unforced errors, while Rinderknech committed more unforced errors (28) than he had winners (25).

For Lehecka, it will be just his second quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam following the 2023 Australian Open. The 23-year-old hit 18 aces and overcame 10 double faults against Mannarino.

Djokovic breezed to victory under the lights against Struff as he rifled off 12 aces with no double faults. The 38-year-old Serbian's return game also was on point as Struff managed to win just 54 percent of his first serves.

Fritz, 27, never allowed Machac to get to a break point as he stacked up 14 aces versus two double faults. The California native won 86 percent of his first serves and 70 percent of his second serves. Now he's just two wins away from returning to the U.S. Open final, where he lost last year to Jannik Sinner.

Fritz, however, has yet to solve Djokovic. They have met 10 times over the last six years -- including in the 2023 U.S. Open quarterfinals -- and Djokovic has won every time.

Austin Curtright, USA TODAY NETWORK August 31, 2025 at 9:32 PM

Miami football's CJ Daniels might've just made the catch of the year in the Hurricanes' Week 1 game vs. Notre Dame.

With 18 seconds left before halftime, Daniels climbed the ladder and hauled in a high pass from Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck for a touchdown to give Miami a 14-7 lead over the Fighting Irish on Sunday, Aug. 31. But it wasn't just any catch, as Daniels rose for a one-handed grab while avoiding two Notre Dame defensive backs.

The first-year transfer from LSU finished the first half with three receptions for 34 yards and the score. The sixth-year receiver spent the first four seasons of his career at Liberty before transferring to LSU, and then Miami. He received two extra seasons due to COVID-19 in 2020 and redshirting in 2022.

Miami's passing offense hasn't missed a beat despite having to replace Cam Ward, who went No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Beck completed 13 of 20 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns in the first half against Notre Dame, looking healthy after suffering a season-ending shoulder surgery for Georgia in the SEC championship game last season.

Daniels had 42 receptions for 480 yards with no touchdowns last season at LSU, but is already proving to be a key contributor for the Hurricanes.

Here's how social media is reacting to Daniels' highlight catch.

Polish tennis star Kamil Majchrzak has met the young fan who had a hat snatched from him in a viral video clip after one of Majchrzak's matches at the US Open.

Majchrzak gave the boy a US Open-branded bag of gifts, including another cap, and posed for photos alongside him, posting the encounter to his Instagram stories on Saturday.

"Today after warm up, I had a nice meeting," he wrote. "Do you recognize (cap emoji)?"

"Hello world, together with Brock, we wish you a great day," he wrote in another story.

The two first encountered each other when Majchrzak was signing souvenirs for the crowd, after Majchrzak's second round win against Karen Khachanov on Thursday.

The Pole took off his cap and appeared to pass it to the boy who was clutching a giant tennis ball with both hands. As the boy reached out to take the cap, a man standing next to him snatched it away and gave it to a woman who put it in her handbag despite the boy's visible protestations. The boy and the man appeared not to know each other.

The clip subsequently went viral on social media, with one X post alone gathering 10 million views.

Social media users identified the man as a Polish CEO, whose company was review-bombed with hundreds of one-star reviews on Trustpilot, all referencing the incident. CNN has not been able to independently verify the man's identity and has reached out to the company for comment.

After seeing the incident, Majchrzak launched a search for the boy, posting on his Instagram story, per Sky News, "Hey guys, could you help me find the kid from my match."

He later posted, according to Sky News, "I am impressed by the power of the Internet. We got it! All good now."

After defeating No. 9 seed Khachanov, Majchrzak was forced to retire during his third round match against Leandro Riedi due to a torn intercostal muscle.

Patrick Mahomes is helping teammate Travis Kelcebrush up on his geography. Kelce, who just this week announced his engagement to pop star Taylor Swift, is set to travel to São Paulo, Brazil this week for the Kansas City Chiefs' NFL regular season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Despite Kelce having traveled to Brazil last year to see Swift's Eras Tour, Mahomes still had to educate the Chiefs tight end on the details of international travel.

In a press conference ahead of the Chiefs' Week 1 showdown against Justin Herbert's Chargers, Mahomes sarcastically responded to a reporter's question about the challenges of international travel during the NFL season.

Despite trainers and coaches making their best efforts to "do the research" and set players up for success while traveling abroad, Mahomes stated the biggest challenge was teammates like Kelce not knowing how far the trip is.

Thankfully, Mahomes is here to teach Travis "how the globe works."

Will Taylor Swift Attend the Chiefs vs. Chargers Game in Brazil?

While Taylor hasn't confirmed her schedule with us (call us, Taylor), it's unlikely she'll attend the Chiefs vs. Chargers game in Brazil, likely due to security concerns.

But never count Taylor out. The Life of a Showgirl singer attended eight Chiefs games during the 2024-25 NFL season and was present for 13 games during the 2023-24 season.

Since Travis traveled to Argentina to watch his love's Eras Tour stop there, we know this couple isn't above putting in the miles to support each other's work.

And thanks to Mahomes' geography tutorial, Travis will know exactly where to tell his fiancée to go.

Midge Ure, the 1980's music icon known for fronting the band Ultravox and co-writing and producing Band Aid's charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" played what he called "a lovely last show, for the time being" Saturday, Aug. 30 in Pordenone, Italy, as he battles an undisclosed "health issue that requires urgent treatment."

Ure shared a photo from the show on his official Instagram account on Aug. 31, adding that the concert had a "great setting" and a "great audience," and vowing, "We will be back 🙏."

On Aug. 6 the singer-songwriter and record producer posted the news on his social media accounts that he would be forced to postpone some upcoming dates.

"It is with great sadness and difficulty that I have to reschedule all shows planned from September onwards and aiming to be back on the road again by later this year," he wrote. "During a recent routine check-up, doctors discovered a health issue that requires urgent treatment and a period of recovery," he wrote.

Ure did not reveal details about his health issue but went on to apologize to his fans who may have already made plans to attend his upcoming gigs.

Fans offered thanks and support to Ure in the comments of his latest post on Instagram.

"Thank you, great show! Concerto spaziale! 🤩🤩," wrote on fan.

"Midge, you are still "the Voice"! Great!👏," added another.

"Take care, Midge! Wishing you all the best ❤️," another fan wrote.

Other fans focused on wishing Ure well on his road to recovery and said they looked forward to seeing the musician perform next year.

"Take care, all the best for a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing you in Sydney next year ❤️," one fan posted.

"Sending you best wishes Midge for a speedy recovery. Take care and rest up. Xx ❤️❤️❤️," another fan added.

In his post earlier in the month, Ure seemed confident that he would recover from the undisclosed health issue and will return to the road soon.

"Let me reassure you that the A Man of Two Worlds tour is very much going ahead. I'm aiming to be back on the road again as soon as possible and looking forward to getting back out there and sharing this music with you all," he wrote.

"My team and I are working closely with promoters to reschedule the affected dates, and we'll share updates on my Facebook page as soon as we have them. I kindly ask that you respect the privacy of myself and my family during this difficult time," he continued.

"Thank you, as always, for your understanding, patience, and unwavering support. It truly means a great deal," he wrote, before signing off with "With thanks and love, Midge."

A federal judge on Sunday blocked the Trump administration from sending any unaccompanied migrant child to Guatemala unless they have a deportation order, just hours after lawyers alerted her of what they described as a hurried government effort to deport hundreds of children.

U.S. District Court Judge Sparkle Sooknanan issued her order as the deportation effort was fully underway, with planes with migrant children on board ready to take off from Texas.

Earlier Sunday, in the overnight hours, Sooknanan issued a temporary restraining order barring officials from sending a group of 10 migrant children between the ages of 10 and 17 to Guatemala, granting a request from attorneys who alleged the effort would skirt legal protections Congress established for these minors. She also scheduled a hearing in the afternoon to weigh the case's next steps.

But Sooknanan abruptly moved up the hearing earlier on Sunday, saying she had been alerted that some migrant children were already in the process of being deported.

As that hearing got underway, Sooknanan announced she had just issued a broader temporary restraining order blocking any deportations of unaccompanied children from Guatemala and in U.S. custody who did not have a deportation order. She instructed Drew Ensign, the Justice Department lawyer representing the Trump administration, to quickly inform officials they had to halt their deportation plans.

Ensign acknowledged deportation planes had been prepared to take off on Sunday, but said they were all "on the ground" and still on U.S. soil. He said he believed one plane had taken off earlier but had come back.

At the request of Sooknanan, Ensign said he confirmed that the children on the planes would be deplaned and returned to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, which is responsible for caring for migrant minors who enter the U.S. without authorization and without their parents or legal guardians.

The Justice Department said 76 unaccompanied children were slated to be sent to Guatemala on Sunday before the effort was blocked. Of those, 16 had been returned to HHS custody as of Sunday evening and the rest were expected to be in HHS care by 10:30 p.m.

HHS houses unaccompanied children in shelters or foster homes until they turn 18 or until they can be placed with a suitable sponsor in the U.S., who are often family members.

Sooknanan conceded her temporary restraining order, which is set to last 14 days, is "extraordinary" but justified it on the grounds that the government had decided to "execute a plan to remove these children" in the "wee hours" of a holiday weekend.

In their lawsuit, lawyers for the group of Guatemalan children said the Trump administration had launched an effort to deport more than 600 migrant minors to Guatemala without allowing them to request humanitarian protection, even though U.S. law protects them from speedy deportations. They alleged the children could face abuse, neglect or persecution if returned to Guatemala.

Ensign, the Justice Department attorney, said the Trump administration was not trying to formally deport the Guatemalan children under U.S. immigration law, but instead repatriate them to Guatemala so they could reunite with relatives there. He said the Guatemalan government and the children's relatives had requested the reunifications.

But lawyers for the children disputed the government's claims, citing one case in which they say a child's parents did not request any repatriation. They also said a law known as the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act says unaccompanied migrant children who are not from Mexico must be allowed to see an immigration judge and apply for legal protections before any deportation effort. Some of the children facing return to Guatemala still have pending immigration cases, the attorneys said.

Ensign said the government's legal position is that it can "repatriate" these children, based on authority given to HHS to reunite "unaccompanied alien children with a parent abroad in appropriate cases."

Representatives for the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the deportation plans.

Neha Desai, an attorney at the California-based National Center for Youth Law who works with migrant minors, said the U.S. government was attempting to deport children with "already filed claims for legal relief based on the abuse and persecution that they experienced in their home country."

"This is both unlawful and profoundly inhumane," Desai added.

Most of the unaccompanied children who cross the U.S. southern border without legal permission hail from Central America and tend to be teenagers. Once in the U.S., many file applications for asylum or other immigration benefits to try to stay in the country legally, such as a visa for abused, abandoned or neglected youth.

As part of its larger crackdown on illegal immigration, the Trump administration has sought to make drastic changes to how the U.S. processes unaccompanied children. It has made it harder for some relatives, including those in the country illegally, to sponsor unaccompanied children out of government custody and offered some teenagers the option to voluntary return to their native countries.

The Trump administration has also directed agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies to conduct "welfare checks" on children released from HHS custody, a move it has said is in response to disputed claims that the Biden administration "lost" hundreds of thousands of migrant minors.

There are currently roughly 2,000 migrant children in HHS care.

Charlie Woods didn't produce his best outing over the weekend at the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, but he made it a memorable one.

Charlie, the son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, was even par through the first 11 holes of the third round before hitting a hole-in-one after he won the final day of the tournament.

The hole-in-one came on the 12th hole from 177 yards out.

Woods finished the day in a five-way tie for 31st after finishing seven-over par.

The first full Saturday of college football is in the books! A few games are left on the Week 1 slate, but plenty of drama has already been provided.

Saturday saw a huge clash of titans, in Columbus, Ohio, as #3 Ohio State hosted #1 Texas. Two first-year starting quarterbacks were at the helms of both offenses, and it showed as defense owned the day. The low-scoring affair concluded with Ohio State's defense coming out on top as the Buckeyes took down the Longhorns 14-7. Andy Staples, Ross Dellenger and Steven Godfrey breakdown the game. Has Arch Manning been overhyped, or is the heavy criticism coming a little too soon? Does Ohio State look poised to make a run at repeating as national champions? Plus, Saturday's College Gameday at the Texas vs. Ohio State game was Lee Corso's final show. He went out a winner on his 431st headgear pick, ending the same way he started, by picking the Buckeyes. He then watched the game from the press box and Ross tells a behind the scenes story of Lee Corso joining him up in the press box to watch the game.

Later, the guys chat about some more Saturday drama. The biggest shock of the day was #8 Alabama being upset by unranked Florida State. An upset that only Lee Corso saw coming. The Kalen DeBoer era has had some slip-ups that were rarely seen by his predecessor and it has people wondering how much longer he may last in Tuscaloosa. The guys share their thoughts on Coach DeBoer's situation in Alabama and what Florida State did to be successful. Are the Seminoles a team to be reckoned with this season? Plus they dive into one more game as they recap #9 LSU defeating #4 Clemson. What did they see from both teams that are encouraging signs for the rest of the season?

Finally, Andy, Ross and Steven take a look at how they did on their picks from Thursday. Despite how those picks may have gone, they decide to make one more pick as they preview Sunday night's game of #6 Notre Dame visiting #10 Miami. What questions do they need answered to believe 'The U' is back? Do they trust the Irish with a new quarterback running the show? They answer all of these and more.

CBSNews August 31, 2025 at 7:36 PM

A flotilla carrying activist Greta Thunberg and others departed from Barcelona for the Gaza Strip on Sunday with humanitarian aid on board.

The Global Sumud Flotilla will try to break the Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territory and bring humanitarian aid, food, water and medicine to Gaza as Israel steps up its offensive in Gaza City.

"The story here is about Palestine," Thunberg said at a press conference in Barcelona. "The story here is how people are being deliberately deprived of the very basic means to survive."

Food experts warned earlier this month that Gaza City was in famine and that half a million people across the strip were facing catastrophic levels of hunger. The nearly 23-month war has killed more than 63,000 people, with at least 332 Palestinians dying of malnutrition, including 124 children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

Activists, including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, are departing Barcelona for Gaza as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a self-described

The maritime convoy, comprising approximately 20 boats and delegations from 44 countries, will be joined by additional ships from ports in Italy, Greece, and Tunisia in the coming days as it navigates its route from the western Mediterranean to the Gaza Strip, organizers said.

Thunberg and "Game of Thrones" actor Liam Cunningham are some of the most recognizable figures on the expedition, as well as activists, politicians like former mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, and journalists.

"It has been very clear that Israel has been continuously violating international law by either attacking, unlawfully intercepting the boats in international waters, and continuously preventing the humanitarian aid from coming in", said Thunberg in an interview with The on Saturday.

It is not the first time Thunberg and Cunninham will attempt to reach Gaza waters this year. She was deported in June when the ship she was traveling on with 11 other people, the Madleen, was stopped by the Israeli military.

Cunningham, who will join the flotilla, played a video showing a girl singing while planning her own funeral. The girl, Fatima, died four days ago, he said.

"What sort of world have we slid into where children are making their own funeral arrangements?" Cunningham told reporters.

In late July, the Israeli military stopped another aid ship, detained 21 international activists and reporters, and seized its cargo, including baby formula, food and medicine, according to Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

An Israeli official said Saturday that the country will soon halt or slow humanitarian aid into parts of northern Gaza, as it expands its military offensive against Hamas, a day after the city was declared a combat zone.

The war began on Oct. 7, 2023, when an attack by Hamas terrorists inside Israel claimed the lives of 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took 251 people hostage.

Editor's Note: This article has been corrected. A representative for Susan Sarandon tells CBS News that while the actress is supportive of the cause, she was not on the flotilla, as was previously reported by the .

CBSNewsAugust 31, 2025 at 12:12 PM

A new tropical storm has formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean, more than 1,000 miles off the coast of Mexico. There was no immediate threat to land.

Tropical Storm Kiko developed early Sunday and is expected to become a hurricane later this week, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. The hurricane center did not issue any coastal watches or warnings.

"Strengthening is expected during the next couple of days, and the system is forecast to become a hurricane by Tuesday," the hurricane center said.

The storm's center was located about 1,045 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.

Its maximum sustained winds were clocked at 40 mph. It is moving west at a speed of 9 mph.

Kiko is the 11th named storm in the Eastern North Pacific this year.

So far this year, Tropical Storm Chantal is the only one to have made landfall in the U.S., bringing deadly flooding to North Carolina in early July. In June, Barry made landfall as a tropical depression on Mexico's eastern coast.

Miranda Wang lost the lead to the No. 1 player in women's golf and then delivered the clutch shots over the final three holes for a 2-under 70 and a one-shot victory over Jeeno Thitikul on Sunday in the FM Championship for her first LPGA title.

Wang became the seventh LPGA rookie to win this year, extending a remarkable streak of no multiple winners through the tour's first 23 tournaments of the year.

Thitikul, who took over the No. 1 ranking from Nelly Korda three weeks ago, was poised to end that streak and ruin Wang's hopes when the Thai hit wedge to 2 feet at No. 9 for her fifth birdie to go out in 31 on the TPC Boston and tie for the lead. She shot 67.

Thitikul bogeyed the 17th hole, and Wang made a 6-foot birdie on the 17th to regain the lead and win it with a par.

Sei Young Kim (70) finished third, three shots behind. Andrea Lee also shot 70 and finished another shot back. Rose Zhang had to settle for a 72 to tie for fifth with Jin Hee Im, who had a bogey-free 62.

European Tour

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Thriston Lawrence of South Africa recovered from making bogey at his first three holes to shoot 4-under 66 and win the European Masters in Switzerland for his fifth title on the European tour.

Lawrence won by two strokes from three players — Matt Wallace (67), Sami Valimaki (65) and Rasmus Hojgaard (62).

Matt Fitzpatrick, who is hoping to secure a captain's pick from Luke Donald on Monday to get into Europe's Ryder Cup team alongside Hojgaard, was alone in fifth place, one shot further back after a 67.

Lawrence steadied himself after a sloppy start, driving the green and holing an eagle putt from 20 feet at the par-4 sixth hole and then making five birdies at picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club. His most recent title was at the BMW International Open in June 2023.
