SAN DIEGO (AP) — Alec Baldwin says the year since his trial suddenly ended with a dismissal has been far better than the few years that preceded it, and the affect that time has had on him has been "immeasurable."

"Something as powerful as that happens in your life, you don't know how much it changes you," he said. "I can't even tell you how different I am from three-and-a-half years ago. And what I want and what I don't want, and how I want to live my life and not live my life."

The 67-year-old actor spoke to The at San Diego's Comic-Con International, where he was part of a panel on 75 years of Charles Schulz's "Peanuts," whose simplicity, existential philosophy and moral outlook have been very much on his mind.

Baldwin spoke while a suited Snoopy character stood nearby after posing for photos with him.

In a foreword Baldwin wrote for "The Complete Peanuts 1977-1978," he said while reading Schulz's newspaper comic strip every day as a child, he realized Charlie Brown, more than anyone, wanted the things he wanted.

Chief among those wants are "the desire to have friends and the desire to hold your friends close to you."

That hasn't changed in the years since.

"Come on, what man my age doesn't relate to Charlie Brown? If Charlie Brown was 67 years old, he'd be me, but he wouldn't have been stupid enough to have seven (small) children," he said with a laugh.

But he aspires to the qualities of a different character.

"Lucy. I want to be Lucy. Lucy is in charge. She's got it all figured out," he said. "She pauses for a moment of self-awareness, but not too long."

Baldwin said he admired Schulz's simple line drawings combined with the real circumstances of the characters, embodied by real children's voices when the animated holiday specials emerged in his childhood.

"It's so complicated and simple at the same time, which is what I think makes it beautiful," he said.

And he admired Schulz's willingness to embrace melancholy, and deeper darknesses, in stories about inner struggle that needed no villains.

"A dog sitting on top of a dog house would have the same impact on you as, like, Nietzsche, he said," looking across the room at Snoopy. "They should have named the dog Nietzsche."

Baldwin's career has had several distinct phases. Early on he played tough husbands and boyfriends in supporting roles including "Married to the Mob" and "Working Girl." He moved on to heroic leading man in "The Hunt for Red October" and "The Shadow."

Downshifting to memorable character parts, he showed his gift for manly speeches in "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "The Departed," and his comedy prowess in seven seasons of "30 Rock" and as a constant host and guest on "Saturday Night Live."

In July 2024 his trial in New Mexico on an involuntary manslaughter charge in the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western "Rust" fell apart halfway through. A judge dismissed the case on allegations authorities withheld evidence.

"I can't believe that happened on that day the way it happened," he said. "And it couldn't have been better for us in certain terms because of the malice and so forth and everything that's embodied in that whole situation."

The next phase is uncertain. He says he's "just trying to move forward with my wife and my family."

He and wife Hilaria and their seven small kids recently appeared on the TLC reality series "The Baldwins."

He says he has successfully sold his young ones on "Peanuts," especially the Halloween and Christmas specials, as he did with his now nearly 30-year-old daughter Ireland when she was young.

He notices their personalities zig-zagging between the traits of Schulz's characters.

"They're Charlie Brown, now they're Snoopy, now they're Schroeder, now they're Linus, now they're Pig-Pen," he said. "They're Pig-Pen most of the time, I must say."

And their house is full of themed toys.

He keeps a small Snoopy figure among the things in his office, a reminder to try to maintain "love, kindness, patience."

"Peanuts are still kind of like, in that zone," he said. "Let's just try to be good people."

Greta Lee rides a lightcycle in new 'Tron: Ares' footage at Comic-Con

-

 • Greta Lee rides a lightcycle in new 'Tron: Ares' footage at Comic-Con

Brian Truitt, USA TODAYJuly 26, 2025 at 12:22 AM

SAN DIEGO – No one's giddier than Greta Lee about being in a "Tron" movie.

Directed by Joachim Rønning, "Tron: Ares" (in theaters Oct. 10) brings the computer programs from the digital Grid into the real world for the first time, all set to a cool Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.

A Comic-Con panel for the sci-fi action film on Friday, July 25, debuted new footage, including a moment where digital warriors Ares (Jared Leto) and Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith) are sent to reality to take an important piece of code from programmer Eve Kim (Lee). A high-speed chase ensues, and Eve winds up stealing one of her pursuers' lightcycles.

Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox

Eve Kim (Greta Lee) runs from a tank from the Grid that invades the real world in "Tron: Ares."

And it kind of made her life. "I told my agents to find me something where I can ride a lightcycle. I actually got to ride one. It was insane," said Lee ("Past Lives"). "I never could have imagined it could be that fun." Her character is also seen in the Grid riding a nifty speeder vehicle alongside Ares, with Athena's drones in hot pursuit. (She makes a deal with Ares that he'll return her to the real world in exchange for the code he needs.)

One person almost as excited as Lee is the OG "Tron" star himself, Jeff Bridges. "It's so cool, man!" said the actor, who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn from the 1982 first film and 2010's "Tron: Legacy." "Artificial intelligence, that's on everybody's hearts and minds these days, and I'm glad to be part of this story."

Bridges was joined on the panel by original "Tron" writer/director Steven Lisberger, who said Bridges has "been a gift to 'Tron' since day one" and over the years has seen "Tron" become real life. "That's more far out than 'Tron,' " he said.

"We kind of created our own genre with virtual adventure and it's not going away," the filmmaker added. "It's not that Tron was ahead of its time. It's that everyone else was late."

Jared Leto plays the super-intelligent program Ares in Disney's "Tron: Ares."

Leto admitted that he's an "official 'Tron' superfan," and the actor spearheaded the making of the third movie. Back in 1982, "video games were exploding, and films were a huge part of my life. ('Tron') just grabbed a hold of me. It took me to a place I'd never been before and rattled my imagination."

During his first day on the set, Bridges heard that Leto only wanted to be called by his character name, Ares. "I could understand that," Bridges said. "It's a tough part, man, to play a program. I figured I'm playing Flynn, I'm the guy who created this thing, but I didn't wanted to offend him as a thespo. I said, 'Can I call you Air?' He said, 'You can call me whatever you want.' "

Leto got such a kick out of being around Bridges that he actually yelled "cut" early during one take: "I couldn't stop smiling because I was working with this guy."

There is connective tissue between "Ares" and the original "Tron," from props to characters: For example, Evan Peters plays Julian Dillinger, a descendant of "Tron" baddie Edward Dillinger (David Warner). Lee said "Ares" is "absolutely for superfans and die-hards, but we have this exciting opportunity to usher in a whole new audience for 'Tron.' I think we'll be able to connect a lot of different people with this movie."

Leto also shouted out "Tron" music over the years. He called the Daft Punk soundtrack "incredible" and was downright giddy himself about Nine Inch Nails' contributions to "Ares." A new music video for the single "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" premiered at Comic-Con.

"Very few people could fill those shoes," said Leto, and Nine Inch Nails "made music that will last a lifetime."

As Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour draws to a close, Blue Ivy emerges as a star

-

 • As Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour draws to a close, Blue Ivy emerges as a star

SARAH JONES-SMITH July 26, 2025 at 12:03 AM

"Who they came to see?" Beyoncé asks as she performs her 2023 single "My House" during the Cowboy Carter tour. For many, the answer has been Blue Ivy.

Blue Ivy Carter, the Grammy-winning artist's 13-year-old daughter, is more present than ever on stage, and fans are impressed by the growth from her first performance years ago to now.

Isabella Kerr, 15, has admired Beyoncé for years, but said she attended the Cowboy Carter tour specifically to experience Blue Ivy's moves in person.

"People are saying, "Oh, she's a mini Beyoncé," but no, I think she's the first Blue. Everything about her when she's on stage is electrifying," said Kerr.

The Cowboy Carter tour concludes Saturday in Las Vegas. The tour's 30 previously stops have fans buzzing that Blue Ivy is well on her way to being a next generation powerhouse.

Blue Ivy's stage presence grows on Cowboy Carter tour

Blue first graced the stage at 11 years old during her mother's 2023 Renaissance tour, appearing during the legacy-celebrating anthems "My Power" and "Black Parade." Supporters anticipated her performance at each stop.

She performed again during "Beyoncé Bowl," the NFL Christmas Day Halftime Show that was just nominated for four Emmy Awards. She danced alongside the icon as she performed songs from the "Cowboy Carter" album for the first time.

"Even the difference between the Renaissance Tour and now, you can tell she's really grown in her confidence," said fan and artist Olivia Ellis. "You can tell she has a different vibe about her."

On the Cowboy Carter tour, she can almost be mistaken for one of Beyoncé's professional dancers. She is on stage for nearly every song and has a solo recreating her mother's choreography from her 2006 "Déjà-vu" music video, a nod to the undeniable similarities between the two.

An inherited professionalism

Online videos of Blue display professionalism comparable to her mother's during the Cowboy Carter tour. During a rainy New Jersey stop, she brought out towels to dry her area of the stage before nailing her "America Has a Problem" choreography.

In another unexpected moment during a Chicago show, her earring got caught on Beyoncé's hair. Blue remained calm, removed the jewelry and motioned to the singer that it was safe in her hand as they both seamlessly continued.

"It's the family business," said Kinitra D. Brooks, an academic and author of "The Lemonade Reader," a collection that explores the nuances of Beyoncé's 2016 visual album, "Lemonade." "She is literally studying under the best person doing it out there today. Why wouldn't she take advantage of that opportunity?"

Blue Ivy's fans dub themselves as the 'Ivy League'

In "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," fans were given a behind-the-scenes look at the decision-making process the first time Blue was allowed to perform. Beyoncé expressed how nervous she was about her child being in front of thousands of people made her, revealing she initially said no.

"I did not think it was an appropriate place for an 11-year-old on a stadium stage," she said in the documentary. "I made a deal with her, and I said, 'If you practice and you show your commitment, I'll let you do one show.'" Blue Ivy fulfilled her end of the deal, and a fan base was formed: the "Ivy League."

Kerr says Blue's accomplishments inspire her to work harder to achieve her own dreams. "She worked to be on stage, and look at her now. If I work to what I want to be, I can be killing it like her."

At last month's Cowboy Carter Paris stop, members of the Beyhive and Ivy League finally got what they had been asking for — Blue Ivy merchandise. Shirts with the teen's face and the phrase "Déjà Blue" plastered on the front were available for purchase.

Prior to that, fans were creating their own custom pieces that highlighted Blue and Beyoncé's connection.

At the MetLife Stadium show, Ellis wore a custom corset top she painted, showcasing Blue Ivy and her 8-year-old sister, Rumi Carter, on stage with Beyoncé during "Protector," a track from the "Cowboy Carter" album that Rumi is featured on.

"I thought that would just be a really fun moment to highlight on a corset," she said. "It's just really cool to see her as a mom because we've all grown up with Beyoncé, and now it's like her show is kind of like a family affair."

Mother-daughter duos resonate with Beyoncé and Blue Ivy's bond

Blue Ivy's confidence and professionalism are not only a testament to her hard work, but Beyoncé's motherhood.

Mother-daughter duos around the globe filled stadium seats, excited to watch Beyoncé and her daughter display their strong bond for the world to see. In many cases, the mothers have been Beyoncé fans for years and are excited for their daughters to grow up with Blue Ivy, a high-flyer for their generation.

Tanazha Baylis took her now 11-year-old daughter, Aria Brown, to the Renaissance tour, where she did not miss a beat dancing along to Blue Ivy's "My Power" choreography.

Brown was so determined to attend the Cowboy Carter Tour that she started selling popular toys, such as slime and Squishmallows, and saving her money.

"She literally was like, 'Mom, I don't know what you're going to do, but I have to go to this concert,'" said Baylis. "I just had to make it happen after that."

Brown became a Beyoncé fan after participating in a dance recital with a theme centered around the superstar's career throughout the years. Baylis, who says she has always been a big fan, is happy to share these experiences with her daughter.

"It just showed her a cool mom and daughter, and it's just something that she can do as well. Beyoncé is a little older but, with seeing Blue there, it made it tangible for her."

Although there is no solid answer for what the future holds for Blue Ivy, it is widely recognized that the possibilities are limitless.

"We couldn't imagine that Beyoncé would do all of these things that she could do. All we saw were people trying to put limitations on her," said Brooks. "I think one of the things that Beyoncé wants us to do and what she wants for Blue is for us to not put those limitations on Blue."

Nearly two weeks after Andy Byron, the tech company's married CEO, was caught on a Coldplay concert kiss cam with his arms around Astronomer HR executive Kristin Cabot, the Goop founder, 52, starred in a new ad for the company. Paltrow's ex-husband, Chris Martin, played a key role in the viral moment.

The video was shared to the company's social media accounts and captioned, "Thank you for your interest in Astronomer."

Paltrow, who was married to Martin from 2003 until 2016, appears in business casual attire, sitting at a desk for a quick announcement.

"I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer," she said. The Marty Supreme actress added that the company had received "a lot of questions over the last few days" since the scandal went viral.

Cabot is also reportedly married. Both she and Byron have since resigned from the company.

After her introduction, Paltrow explained that she would be answering the most common questions Astronomer has received thus far — the first being, "OMG! What the actual f---?"

In a hilarious twist, the Iron Man actress dodged the inquiry.

"Yes, Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow, unifying the experience of running data, ML and AI pipelines at scale," Paltrow said, using her opportunity as temporary spokesperson to highlight what Astronomer does.

The next question to Astronomer was, "How is your social media team holding —"

Before the full question could appear on the screen, Paltrow again pivoted, mentioning that the company still has room for their Beyond Analytics event in September.

Without answering any of the burning questions, Paltrow concluded, "We will now be returning to what we do best, which is delivering game-changing results for our customers. Thank you for your interest in Astronomer."

Rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart ends holdout, signs $18.97 million deal with Bengals

-

 • Rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart ends holdout, signs $18.97 million deal with Bengals

JOE REEDY July 25, 2025 at 7:20 PM

FILE - Texas A&M's Shemar Stewart, the Cincinnati Bengals first round draft pick, 17th overall, speaks to members of the media during an NFL football news conference at Paycor Stadium, April 25, 2025, in Cincinnati, Ohio. (AP Photo/Joe Maiorana, file) ()

Shemar Stewart and the Cincinnati Bengals agreed to a contract on Friday, ending the rookie defensive end's three-day holdout from training camp.

Stewart's agent, Zac Hiller of LAA, said the four-year deal is worth $18.97 million guaranteed, including a $10.4 million signing bonus.

The Bengals and Stewart were deadlocked over contract language that could potentially void future guarantees if there are any off-field incidents or conduct detrimental to the team.

Other teams have had that language, but this was the first time Cincinnati included that provision with a first-round pick.

Stewart, the 17th overall pick in April's draft, eventually agreed to the provision, but got more of his signing bonus now instead of later in the season.

Stewart had only 4 1/2 total sacks during three seasons at Texas A&M, but at 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds they are hoping to refine his pass rushing skills as well as step into the starting lineup for the Sept. 7 opener at Cleveland.

When Stewart does step onto the practice field, it will be his first time suiting up as a Bengal. He did not participate in offseason workouts after not signing an injury waiver.

"He learned a lot in the classroom, but at the end of the day for us when it comes down to technique and just our core fundamentals, the only way to go out there and create great habits is to do it every day," defensive coordinator Al Golden said on Monday. "So from that standpoint, there was a time constraint there on what he's done on the field. And obviously we need to get him out there and get him going."

Trey Hendrickson — the Bengals other projected starter at defensive end — remains away from training camp as the two sides try to reach a contract extension. Hendrickson led the NFL with 17 1/2 sacks last season and is seeking a deal that matches what the league's top pass rushers are earning.

Cincinnati was 9-8 last season, but missed the playoffs for the second straight season due to its struggles on defense. The Bengals finished 25th in the league in total defense (348.3 yards allowed per game) and lost four games last season in which they scored at least 30 points.

Stewart's signing means Cleveland running back Quinshon Judkins is the only unsigned NFL draft pick. Judkins, the 36th overall selection, was arrested on July 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a charge of battery and domestic violence. Browns general manager Andrew Berry said on Thursday the team is continuing to gather more information on the incident, which is why Judkins remains unsigned.

Brian Truitt, USA TODAYJuly 25, 2025 at 11:11 PM

SAN DIEGO – Dan Trachtenberg's first "Predator" movie experience was sitting in the back of a car in the 1980s, heading to a karate tournament and listening intently as other kids ran down the plot of that cool new Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie.

"I grew up loving the idea of seeing an R-rated movie for the first time and 'Predator' was that," the director said at a Comic-Con panel on Friday, July 25, for latest franchise effort "Predator: Badlands" (in theaters Nov. 7).

"Badlands" marks the first time in the long-running series that a Predator is the actual protagonist rather than the villain – in this case, a young alien hunter named Dek (played by New Zealand actor Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi). And it's the latest movie where Trachtenberg, who also directed "Prey" and the animated "Killer of Killers," is taking "Predator" to new places.

Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox

Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) is on the hunt in "Predator: Bandlands."

That said, Trachtenberg revealed at the panel he recently had breakfast with Schwarzenegger and is looking to "cook up stuff for that guy." The first bit: His character Dutch in the original 1987 film has now been added to a key post-credits scene in "Killer of Killers" (streaming on Hulu) that hints to where things could go in the future.

"Badlands" was inspired by Trachtenberg realizing that, in these movies, "the Predator never wins. They're supposed to be the greatest hunters in the galaxy." The director showed off the first 15 minutes of the movie, which introduces Dek as the runt of his clan and why he needs to travel to a "death planet" called Genna to track down an "unkillable" foe and prove himself.

"We really have never in movies seen the Predator hunting on a planet where everything, from grass to creatures, could kill you. He's essentially the Dutch of this movie," Trachtenberg said.

"It was a really fun experiment, the whole process of bringing Dek to life," Schuster-Koloamatang said. "The suit is a little taxing. But it's really rewarding feeling when you get to hang up your boots – or your Yautja feet."

Dek gets help from Thia (Elle Fanning), an android with half a body that goes on the quest with him. Trachtenberg liked the concept of Thia "being strapped to that guy for the gauntlet that he has to go through" a la Chewbacca carrying C-3PO parts in "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back."

Also noteworthy: Thia is a Weylandi-Yutani android, meaning that "Badlands" takes place in the same universe as the "Alien" movies. Does the "Predator" guy want to be the "Alien vs. Predator" guy? "Wouldn't that be cool," Trachtenberg said.

One big change in "Badlands" is in actually filming the Predator. Before, actors would in be suits and the actor would wear a giant mask so the Predator's mandibles and jaws were controlled by filmmakers. This time, Schuster-Koloamatangi wore the armor but the face was open so the Predator's facial expressions would match the actor's via motion-capture performance.

"We really wanted to make sure we could go to emotional places that have never happened in previous films," Trachtenberg said. He described it as "this beautiful moment" of old school meeting digital, "all bring driven by Dimitrius' performance."

 • Live-Action "Lilo & Stitch" Team Unveils Fun Facts at Comic-Con: Stitch's Original Color, the Sequel's Status and More

No one is getting left behind at San Diego Comic-Con!

The cast of Disney's live-action remake Lilo & Stitch joined convention fans on Friday, July 26, for a fun discussion of their favorite memories making the hit film, unveiling fun facts and behind-the-scenes footage. Chris Sanders, creator of the 2002 Lilo & Stitch animated film and the voice of Stitch, also gave an update on the upcoming sequel, which is planned to hit theaters in 2026.

Sanders was joined by Maia Kealoha (Lilo in the live-action film), Tia Carrere (the original voice of Nani, now playing Mrs. Kekoa), and Sydney Agudong (Nani in the live-action film) to also reflect on the franchise's legacy that began with Disney's 2002 animated classic.

Matt Kennedy

Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Sydney Agudong as Nani in 'Lilo & Stitch.'

Lilo & Stitch reached a major box-office milestone in July, with the film surpassing $1 billion in global ticket sales, making it the first Hollywood film to do so in 2025. Per a release from the Walt Disney Company, it marks their fourth $1 billion-plus effort over the past 13 months, after 2024's Moana 2, Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2. Read on for the tidbits the cast revealed following the movie's success.

Stitch was envisioned years before and quite differently

Sanders, 63, revealed that everyone's favorite extraterrestrial chaos agent was originally green rather than blue, and a forest dweller. The figure of Stitch first came to life when Sanders was in art school via illustrations, around 15 years before he and Dean DeBlois began creating the 2002 animated film.

Around the time Disney was developing the animated hit Mulan, Sanders explained they began toying with a twist on typical tropes: " 'What if one of our villains became a hero?' That was the engine that started the whole thing."

Stitch redeemed himself from menacing to merely mischievous in early drafts, but it wasn't until Sanders and DeBlois considered why that the character clicked into place: family — or ʻohana, as it's known in the Hawaiian language — was what Stitch was missing.

The 2025 version, added Sanders, further explored the idea of ʻohana, expanding Lilo's world to include her found family of neighbors, friends and — eventually — aliens.

Casting the part of live-action Nani came down to two sisters

"I don't know if this is known to a lot of people, but it was down to my sister and I for Nani," revealed Agudong, 24, on the panel.

Calling her sister Siena "the first person I wanted to go and hug" when she learned she had booked the part of Lilo's sister, the Kauai-born actress added that the film reminded her of an important fact: "My relationship to my sisters is everything to me. I hold them so, so dear and I would do anything for them."

Kealoha, of course, became Agudong's offscreen sister as well as onscreen. The eight-year-old star called the connection between the two actresses "love at first hugs."

Frazer Harrison/Getty

(Left-right:) Tia Carrere, Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25Kealoha was an irreverent rascal on set

Everyone on the panel — and several other Lilo & Stitch team members in behind-the-scenes footage — agreed that Kealoha was a force to be reckoned with on set. The fact that she appeared to be dragging her family to auditions, rather than the other way around, is part of what booked her the part of Lilo.

Kealoha's favorite activity between takes, she admitted, was pulling pranks on everyone from director Dean Fleischer Camp to her own mother.

"She would greet me with, 'Hello dummy!' " recalled Zach Galifianakis in a behind-the-scenes video. "And I thought, 'I really like this kid.' "

Kealoha bonded with her puppet costar

The panelists recalled working with their costar Stitch despite him being rendered in CGI. "We would use a eye mark or maybe just a piece tape or the mechanic of this puppet," explained Kealoha before fans saw a behind-the-scenes video showing her introduction to that puppet.

That day on set, Kealoha began an adorable tradition: greeting the furry toy Stitch with a smooch, sometimes blackening her own lips on the puppet's paint in the process. "Every day I would kiss his nose," she said — which ended up becoming a special moment in the movie between Lilo and Stitch.

The sequel is underway

As a result of Lilo & Stitch's box-office success, Disney announced on June 26 — a reference to the alien's moniker, Experiment 626 — that the movie would be getting a sequel.

In an Instagram post, Disney shared a video of Stitch driving a mini pink convertible (with a license plate that read "2 FAST"). "Should've known he couldn't keep a secret," the caption read. "A 626 day surprise: #LiloAndStitch 2 is now in development!"

"I have begun writing it," revealed Sanders during the Comic-Con panel. Asked how it's going, he laughed: "Good! I like it."

When fans began asking the panel questions, one raised a point that Sanders found intriguing: given the wildfires that devastated Lahaina, Maui in 2023, could the sequel address its real-life rebuilding? "That's a really interesting thought, actually," responded the filmmaker. "Thanks!"

"I'm looking forward to see what happens in part two," said Carrere, 58. The "love" surrounding Lilo and Stitch, she said, "is what we need in the world."

Israel to allow aid drops in Gaza amid mounting outrage over hunger crisis

Chantal Da SilvaJuly 25, 2025 at 3:21 PM

Israel will allow foreign countries to airdrop aid into Gaza starting Friday, an Israeli security source said, as the country faces mounting backlash over a spiraling hunger crisis in the Palestinian enclave.

The airdrops are expected to be carried out in the coming days by the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, according to the security source. Despite pressure for a ceasefire, both Israel and the United States signaled Friday that they were abandoning talks with Hamas.

Israel also said that World Central Kitchen, an international relief organization that has provided food to Palestinians in the enclave throughout the war, had also begun reactivating its kitchens. WCK did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.

The organization paused operations in Gaza in November after a number of its workers were killed in an Israeli strike last year, but announced in June it would resume cooking in Gaza.

Past efforts to airdrop aid into Gaza, including by the United States, were heavily criticized as an insufficient and impractical way to get relief to the more than 2 million people suffering in dire conditions under Israeli military assault.

The developments come as Israel faces growing backlash on the international stage, with doctors and aid groups operating in Gaza warning of starvation spreading across the enclave.

More than 100 people had died from "famine and malnutrition," most of them children, since the war began in the enclave, the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza said in a statement Wednesday.

Hidaya, 31, sits with her sick 18-month-old son Mohammed al-Mutawaq, who displays signs of malnutrition, at the Al-Shati refugee camp Friday in Gaza City. (Majdi Fathi / NurPhoto via Getty Images)

Israel lifted the two month blockade in May, but has since allowed only limited supplies into the territory, with doctors and health officials reporting growing numbers of children dying from malnutrition in Gaza in recent days.

The aid that has been allowed in has largely been distributed by the controversial U.S.- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation under a system within which hundreds of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces while making their way to collect food.

United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher called Friday for a "ceasefire now," as he shared an update to U.N. member states outlining the challenges to distributing aid in the enclave and the steps "necessary to stop this horror." Airdropping aid was not named among the latter.

Netanyahu said Friday that his country and the U.S. were "now considering alternative options to bring our hostages home," after the apparent collapse of talks with Hamas following a response from the militant group to the latest truce proposal.

President Donald Trump said Friday that Hamas "didn't really want to make a deal. I think they want to die."

"It got to a point where you are going to have to finish the job," he told reporters.

Hamas has blamed Israel for hindering talks and the collapse of a previous ceasefire.

Judge dismisses Trump administration lawsuit against Chicago 'sanctuary' laws

(AP Photo/Erin Hooley,File)

CHICAGO (AP) — A judge in Illinois dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit Friday that sought to disrupt limits Chicago imposes on cooperation between federal immigration agents and local police.

The lawsuit, filed in February, alleged that so-called sanctuary laws in the nation's third-largest city "thwart" federal efforts to enforce immigration laws.

It argued that local laws run counter to federal laws by restricting "local governments from sharing immigration information with federal law enforcement officials" and preventing immigration agents from identifying "individuals who may be subject to removal."

Judge Lindsay Jenkins of the Northern District of Illinois granted the defendants' motion for dismissal.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said he was pleased with the decision and the city is safer when police focus on the needs of Chicagoans.

"This ruling affirms what we have long known: that Chicago's Welcoming City Ordinance is lawful and supports public safety. The City cannot be compelled to cooperate with the Trump Administration's reckless and inhumane immigration agenda," he said in a statement.

Gov. JB Pritzker welcomed the ruling, saying in a social media post, "Illinois just beat the Trump Administration in federal court."

The Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security and did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

The administration has filed a series of lawsuits targeting state or city policies seen as interfering with immigration enforcement, including those in Los Angeles, New York City, Denver and Rochester, New York. It sued four New Jersey cities in May.

Heavily Democratic Chicago has been a sanctuary city for decades and has beefed up its laws several times, including during Trump's first term in 2017.

That same year, then-Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, signed more statewide sanctuary protections into law, putting him at odds with his party.

There is no official definition for sanctuary policies or sanctuary cities. The terms generally describe limits on local cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE enforces U.S. immigration laws nationwide but sometimes seeks state and local help.

'Tron: Ares' Blasts Comic-Con With Lightcycle and Lightboat Chases, Nine Inch Nails Music Video

-

 • 'Tron: Ares' Blasts Comic-Con With Lightcycle and Lightboat Chases, Nine Inch Nails Music Video

Adam B. VaryJuly 25, 2025 at 10:21 PM

"Tron: Ares" blew the roof off of San Diego Comic-Con at its panel on Friday evening, with an eye-popping, ear-blasting laser-light show set to the pulsing original score by Nine Inch Nails. The panel also included two extended clips from the film, and ended with a NIN music video of the original song "As Alive as You Need Me to Be."

The movie is third film in one of the more improbable movie franchises in modern Hollywood, which Disney tacitly acknowledged with how it opened its panel, with an extended trailer that covered the events of the previous two films. The first, 1982's "Tron," stars Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer who gets sucked into the computer mainframe know as the Grid. The movie is best known for its groundbreaking use of computer generated imagery for its visual effects, to capture a purely digital world. But "Tron" was far from a blockbuster, grossing roughly $50 million worldwide (unadjusted). The sequel, "Tron: Legacy," debuted 28 years later, starring Bridges in dual roles as Flynn as an older man and his de-aged digital doppelgänger; it grossed a respectable $410 million globally.

'King of the Hill' Revival Plans On-Screen Tributes to Late Stars Johnny Hardwick, Jonathan Joss

'Rick and Morty' Spinoff 'President Curtis,' Starring Keith David, Announced at Comic-Con

"Tron: Ares" arrives 15 years after "Legacy," and takes the action outside of the virtual world for the first time, with Leto's title character playing a digital soldier brought into the real world by Evan Peters' tech bro character, Julian Dillinger (the namesake of the villain from the 1982 film). Bridges is reprising his role as Flynn, but any more details about his character were left for another day.

The first clip from the film debuted the first lightcycle chase in the movie, in which Dillinger appears to digitally "print" Ares and his compatriot Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith), as well as their lightcycles. He then says they have only 30 minutes to find Eve Kim (Greta Lee), who's left Dillinger's company, Encom, with a memory stick containing important code. Ares uses traffic cameras to find Eve on her motorcycle; they almost capture her, slicing a police car in half in the process with the blade of light that streaks from behind the lightcycles. But Eve ultimately eludes them, winds up taking out Athena and commandeering her lightcycle.

In the second clip, Eve has entered the Grid, and Ares rescues her from an ocean of digital water. He materializes a lightboat and races them both to a portal into the real world, as Athena sends three drones to pursue them. Eve can hardly believe the sleek, glass-like beauty of the world that surrounds her, and agrees to help find the code to help Ares.

During the panel itself, Leto — who also produced the film, and has been attached to it since 2017 — pronounced himself "an official 'Tron' superfan" and said "if I wasn't on the stage, I would be in the audience." He said that when he filmed his first scene with Bridges, he blurted out "cut" mid-take.

"Everyone was surprised, because I don't often do that," Leto said. "The first AD comes over and said, 'Is everything okay? What's wrong?' And I said, 'I just can't stop smiling, because I'm working with this guy."

For his part, Bridges expressed delight at the fact that he's still making "Tron" movies: "'82? 43 years ago? Come on, man!" But he said he started work on the film with a bit of apprehension.

"I remember the first day of wondering how it was going to be," he said. "I heard Jared only wants to be called by his character. Everybody's got different methods and modes. It's a tough part, man, to play a program!"

Moderated by filmmaker and Comic-Con mainstay Kevin Smith, the panel maintained that lighthearted atmosphere throughout, which kept the conversation from going anywhere near the June Air Mail story in which nine women alleged that Leto engaged in misconduct with them during the 2000s. (Leto has denied any wrongdoing.)

Lee, marveling at the experience of her first Comic-Con, said she told her agents, "Find me something where I can ride a lightcycle." Co-stars Arturo Castro and Hasan Minhaj, who play Encom executives, joked about the possible parallels between their film's fictional company and the studio that made the movie.

"It was like walking into Disneyland every day," Castro said of the sets. "And I'm not just saying that because they signed my checks, because they have my family."

"Let this film bring as much shareholder value to the company as possible this quarter," added Minhaj. "Really what this is about is Encom and its earnings, which is a metaphor for the Walt Disney Corporation, one of the best corporations."

"Tron: Ares" will debut in theaters on Oct. 10.
