BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Bryan Kohberger has agreed to plead guilty to murder in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty, an attorney for one victim's family said Monday.

Here's what to know about the case and the recent developments:

Who were the victims and who is the suspect?

Kohberger, 30, is accused in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen at a home near campus in Moscow, Idaho, on Nov. 13, 2022. Autopsies showed the four were all likely asleep when they were attacked, some had defensive wounds and each was stabbed multiple times.

Kohberger, then a criminal justice graduate student at nearby Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania weeks after the killings. Investigators said they matched his DNA to genetic material recovered from a knife sheath found at the crime scene.

What has happened so far in the case?

Kohberger has been charged with four counts of murder in the stabbings. Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

When initially asked to enter a plea in 2023, Kohberger stood silent, prompting the judge to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf.

The northern Idaho farming community of about 25,000 people was rocked by the killings and hadn't seen a homicide in about five years. The trial was scheduled to move to Boise after the defense expressed concerns that Kohberger couldn't get a fair trial where the killings occurred.

What do we know about the plea deal?

Kohberger's trial was set to start in August and was expected to last more than three months. An attorney for the family of Goncalves confirmed that families of the victims received news of the plea deal in a letter from prosecutors Monday.

"We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho," Goncalves' family wrote in a Facebook post. "They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected."

In the letter to families, obtained by ABC News, prosecutors said Kohberger's lawyers approached them seeking a plea deal. The defense team had previously tried but failed to have the death penalty stricken as a possible punishment, including arguing that Kohberger's autism diagnosis made him less culpable.

The prosecutors said they met with available family members last week, including some members of the Goncalves family, before deciding to make Kohberger an offer.

"This resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family," the letter said. "This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction, appeals. Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decision-making process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interest of justice."

What did prosecutors plan to show at trial?

Court filings have shown that prosecutors intended to introduce evidence including Kohberger's "click history" at Amazon.com with the purchased of a Ka-Bar knife — a military-style, fixed-blade knife — along with a sheath and sharpener months before the killings. A Ka-Bar knife sheath was found next to one of the victims.

Prosecutors had also said they also intended to introduce what appears to be a self-portrait Kohberger took on his phone just hours after the killings. In it, he is smiling and giving a thumbs-up gesture.

A roommate who was in the home that morning, sleeping and intoxicated, told police she woke up and saw a man she didn't know — someone with "bushy eyebrows" who was wearing a face mask, prosecutors have said.

No motive has emerged for the killings, nor is it clear why the attacker spared two roommates who were in the home at the time. Authorities have said cellphone data and surveillance video shows that Kohberger visited the victims' neighborhood at least a dozen times before the four students were slain.

In a court filing, Kohberger's lawyers said he was on a long drive by himself around the time the four were killed.

What's next?

A change of plea hearing was set for Wednesday, but the family has asked prosecutors to delay it to give them more time to travel to Boise, Gray said.

In Idaho, judges may reject plea agreements, though such moves are rare. If a judge rejects a plea agreement, the defendant is allowed to withdraw the guilty plea.

The court has issued a gag order that has largely kept attorneys, investigators and others from speaking publicly about the investigation or trial.

Japanese manufacturers are slightly more optimistic despite Trump tariff worries

FILE - The headquarters of Bank of Japan (BOJ) is seen in Tokyo, on Aug. 18, 2023. (AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama, File)

TOKYO (AP) — Business sentiment among large Japanese manufacturers has improved slightly, according to a survey by Japan's central bank released Tuesday, although worries persist over President Donald Trump's tariffs.

The Bank of Japan's quarterly tankan survey said an index for large manufacturers rose to plus 13 from plus 12 in March, when it marked the first dip in a year. The survey is an indicator of companies foreseeing good conditions minus those feeling pessimistic.

Major manufacturers include auto and electronics sectors, whose exports to the U.S. drive the Japanese economy.

U.S. auto tariffs are a worry for major manufacturers like Toyota Motor Corp., but some analysts note global auto sales have held up relatively well in recent months.

The U.S. has imposed 25% tariffs on auto imports. Japanese automakers have plants in Mexico, where President Donald Trump has announced a separate set of tariffs. The U.S. has also imposed 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Japanese officials have been talking frequently with the Trump administration, stressing that Japan is a key U.S. ally.

Trump posted on his social media site Monday that Japan wasn't buying enough rice from the U.S. "They won't take our RICE, and yet they have a massive rice shortage," the president wrote, adding that a letter to Japan was coming.

Also on Monday, National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett told reporters at the White House that Trump "is going to finalize the frameworks we negotiated with a whole bunch of countries after the weekend."

The Bank of Japan, which has kept interest rates extremely low for years to encourage growth, is expected to continue to raise interest rates, but some analysts expect that to wait until next year.

The central bank raised its benchmark rate to 0.5% from 0.1% at the start of this year and has maintained that rate. The next Bank of Japan monetary policy board meeting is at the end of this month. The tankan findings work as important data in weighing a decision.

The weak yen has raised the cost of materials for Japan at a time when the U.S. dollar has been trading at around 140 yen, up considerably from about 110 yen five years ago. A weak yen is a boon for Japan's exporters by boosting the value of their earnings when converted into yen.

The tankan showed sentiment for large non-manufacturers fell to plus 34 from plus 35. That was better than some forecasts, which projected a deeper decline.

The Japanese government reported last week that the nation's unemployment rate in May stood at 2.5%, unchanged from the previous month.

Rosie O'Donnell wrote in an Instagram post that she was sickened by Jeff Bezos' lavish wedding to Lauren Sanchez in Venice, Italy. The days-long event featured a ton of A-list celebrities, from Sydney Sweeney to Leonardo DiCaprio, and prompted widespread backlash and protests from Venice locals.

"The Bezos' wedding. It turned my stomach seeing all these billionaires gathering in the gross excess of it all. The show of it," O'Donnell wrote before calling out Oprah for her attendance at the event.

"Is Oprah friends with Jeff Bezos? Really? How is that possible? He treats his employees with disdain. By any metric he is not a nice man. And his fake fem bot wife who looks like that… Why would he choose her after the salt of the earth Mackenzie [Scott]? Sold his soul is what it looks like from here. The devil is smiling at all his conquests."

Oprah attended the Bezos wedding with longtime friend Gayle King, who is well-acquainted with Sanchez after their space flight together earlier this year courtesy of Bezos' Blue Origin company. O'Donnell expanded on her anti-Bezos thoughts in a post on her Substack page.

Other celebrities who criticized the Bezos wedding include Oscar winner Charlize Theron, who made a quip about Bezos' wedding guests while hosting her annual party for the Africa Outreach Project. She told attendees: "I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that's ok because they suck and we're cool."

O'Donnell made headlines earlier this year for revealing she fled America after the re-election of Donald Trump. She currently lives in Ireland and told Variety she has no plans on returning to the U.S. until Trump is out of office.

"With the current political climate, when would it be safe to come back with my child?" she asked. "I'm not going to push it before this administration is completely finished, and hopefully held accountable for their crimes."

USDA grant cuts leave food groups, farmers scrambling

Main Image

Meg OliverJuly 1, 2025 at 2:20 AM

Four days a week, Maile Auterson and one of her employees drive hundreds of miles across Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas to deliver fresh produce to food deserts.

Auterson's nonprofit, Springfield Community Gardens, helps underserved schools, food pantries and senior centers. One center in Ava, Missouri, is the only place for many where they can get a hot meal.

Springfield Community Gardens is one of many organizations that relied on grants from the United States Department of Agriculture to distribute produce to schools and low-income communities through two pandemic-era federal programs. They provided about $1 billion in funding to schools and food banks to buy food directly from local farms, ranchers and producers. But in March, the USDA abruptly canceled the programs, calling the decision a "return to long-term, fiscally responsible initiatives."

Now, Auterson says, "some of the most vulnerable people" are without adequate access to food, including children and senior citizens.

"We are not past the effects of the pandemic," Auterson added.

The impact of the recent cuts are also trickling down — aid groups used USDA grants to buy food from small farms like the one owned by Liz Graznak.

"It was devastating. I don't know those families, but I know those families are desperate for the food that they were getting," Graznak said.

Graznak said the grant programs were "huge" for her farm. She rented an extra 16 acres to harvest more onions, garlic and peppers to keep up with demand.

"A quarter of my annual sales were going to those programs, and when they said that that money is gone, I thought, 'Oh my god, well now what do I do?'" Graznak said.

Nationwide, more than 8,000 small farmers were supported by the programs. Advocates warn the cuts could ripple through food deserts, rural communities and urban areas where access to healthy food is miles away.

With food insecurity in Missouri above the national average at 15%, according to Feeding America, local farmers help bridge the gap.

Auterson says they will still be able to feed people, but "not nearly as many."

(James Ross/AAP Image via AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A jury was deliberating for a second day Tuesday in the triple murder trial of an Australian woman accused of killing her estranged husband's relatives by deliberately serving them poisonous mushrooms for lunch.

The jurors who began deliberating Monday are sequestered, a rarity in Australia that reflects public and media fervor about the case against Erin Patterson, with several news outlets publishing live blogs that covered every moment of the two-month trial. The jurors will remain secluded until they reach a unanimous decision on the charges of murder and attempted murder.

Three of Patterson's four lunch guests — her parents-in-law Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson — died in the hospital after the 2023 meal, at which she served individual beef Wellington pastries containing death cap mushrooms. The fourth, Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson, became gravely ill but survived.

Patterson, 50, told the trial she didn't deliberately poison her guests and must have accidentally mixed up store-bought and wild mushrooms, which she had foraged herself without knowing they were death caps. She also said she ate the mushrooms but didn't get as sick because she threw up soon after the lunch due to an eating disorder.

Prosecutors in the case, which has gripped Australia for two years, said the accused woman researched, foraged and served the mushrooms deliberately and lied to investigators to cover her tracks. Patterson accepted she had disposed of a food dehydrator after the fatal meal and reset her phone multiple times.

The prosecution said she lied about having a dire medical diagnosis to ensure her guests attended the lunch, cooked individual pastries to avoid poisoning herself, and faked symptoms to make it look as though she fell ill, too.

Prosecutors didn't offer a motive but suggested a deteriorating relationship between the accused and her estranged husband, Simon Patterson, as well as her exasperation with her former in-laws. Simon Patterson was invited to the fatal lunch but didn't go.

Patterson would face life in prison if she is convicted.

Mexican authorities discover 20 bodies, some decapitated, on Sinaloa highway

Ivonne Valdés and Michael Rios, CNNJuly 1, 2025 at 12:45 AM

Sinaloa Secretary General Feliciano Castro Meléndez speaks during a press conference on Monday, June 30. - Feliciano Castro Melendez/Facebook

Prosecutors in northern Mexico's Sinaloa state are investigating the discovery of 20 male bodies with gunshot wounds – including five that were decapitated – on a bridge over a federal highway.

Local media reported that a message was also found hanging over the bridge in Culiacán. The prosecutor's office told CNN it had no comment on the message but would investigate.

Sinaloa Secretary General Feliciano Castro Meléndez called the case a "regrettable situation" and said it was "part of the violence and insecurity that Sinaloa is experiencing."

Since 2024, Culiacán has been the epicenter of armed clashes between rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel.

Two of the most prominent factions are La Mayiza, which is loyal to the cartel's alleged co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, and Los Chapitos, which is loyal to the sons of former drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

'Los Chapitos'

The violence in Sinaloa escalated after Zambada and one of El Chapo's sons, Joaquín Guzmán López, were arrested last year by US authorities in El Paso, Texas.

An official familiar with the operation told CNN at the time that Guzmán López had organized his arrest along with that of Zambada by luring him on a flight to examine a piece of land he thought was in Mexico. Instead, the plane landed in El Paso, Texas, where federal agents arrested them both.

Former Mexican Secretary of Security Rosa Icela Rodriguez said Guzmán López had reached an agreement with one of his brothers, Ovidio Guzmán López, who is in US custody, "So that they would go to the United States to surrender."

However, an attorney for Ovidio told CNN that Rodriguez's claim was "a complete and utter fabrication." An attorney for El Mayo said he "neither surrendered nor negotiated any terms with the US government" and described the flight to the US as a violent kidnapping.

Ovidio had been extradited to the US in September 2023 to face drug trafficking charges over his alleged role in the Sinaloa cartel. Days after his extradition, he pleaded not guilty to the charges in a US court.

But in May, he reached an agreement to change his plea, according to a court document reviewed by CNN.

Later that month, several members of his family entered the US as part of an apparent "negotiation or plea deal opportunity provided by the (US) Department of Justice itself," Mexico's Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said.

Two other sons of El Chapo, Ivan Archivaldo and Jesus Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, are still at large. The US has accused them of leading large-scale drug trafficking operations for the cartel and has issued $10 million bounties for information leading to each of their arrests.
