CEBU, Philippines (Reuters) - The death toll from a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit the central Philippines rose to 69 on Wednesday, a disaster official said, as authorities mounted a rescue effort to find survivors after one of the country's strongest quakes in a decade.

The shallow quake struck late on Tuesday off the coast of the island of Cebu, cutting power and damaging buildings. It was not immediately clear how many people were missing.

The death toll was 69 as of Wednesday late morning said Jane Abapo of the regional Civil Defense office, citing data from the provincial disaster agency that was subject to validation.

The national disaster agency earlier said the toll could be as high as 60, with 150 reported injured.

The hospital in Bogo City near the epicentre of the quake was "overwhelmed", Civil Defense official Raffy Alejandro told reporters.

The Philippine coast guard deployed a vessel carrying dozens of doctors, nurses and other medical personnel bound for Bogo, while President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assured survivors of swift assistance, with cabinet secretaries on the ground directing relief operations.

"We are assessing the damage, we are assessing the needs," Marcos told reporters after distributing aid in Masbate, an island recovering from the impact of Super typhoon Ragasa last week.

Mariano Martinez, the mayor of San Remigio municipality close to Bogo, said there were 11 casualties in the area, with victims as young as 12 and the death toll expected to climb.

"Our first main problem is finding the casualties, identifying people who needs help", he told DZMM radio, adding many homes had suffered damage.

Earthquake monitoring agencies put the quake's depth at around 10 km (6.2 miles) and recorded multiple aftershocks, the strongest having a magnitude of 6. There was no tsunami threat following the quake.

The Philippines lies in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. The country had two major earthquakes in January, with no casualties reported.

In 2023, a 6.7 magnitude offshore earthquake killed eight people.

San Remigio Vice Mayor Alfie Reynes said among those killed were people who were playing basketball in a sports complex when it partially collapsed.

She appealed for food and water for evacuees, as well as heavy equipment to aid search and rescue workers.

"It is raining heavily and there is no electricity so we really need help, especially in the northern part because there's a scarcity of water after supply lines were damaged by the earthquake," Reynes said.

Local media posted videos of people rushing out of their homes as the ground shook and buildings collapsed, including a church that was more than 100 years old.

Cebu, one of the Philippines' most popular tourist destinations, is home to 3.4 million people. It was not immediately clear the extent of the damage in other areas of the island.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country's second busiest gateway, remained operational.

Philippine seismology agency Phivolcs said close to 800 aftershocks have been recorded and warned affected areas to expect more tremors in the coming days, although their strength is expected to gradually diminish.

It reported tremors as far south as Zamboanga del Norte, 330 km (205 miles) away.

In the town of Pilar, resident Archel Coraza said most of his family were asleep when their house began to shake violently.

"I woke them up and we all rushed outside into the street," he told DZMM.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A nationwide general strike in Greece left ferries tied up in port and disrupted public transportation across the capital on Wednesday, as public and private sector workers protest changes to the country's labor laws.

No taxis in Athens or trains will run for the duration of the 24-hour strike, while buses and the city's subway, tram and trolley services were operating on a reduced schedule.

The strike was disrupting services across the country, including in schools, courts, public hospitals and municipalities. Two protest marches were planned in central Athens, with demonstrations also set for other cities.

Unions representing civil servants and private sector workers called the strike to protest labor law changes that will introduce more flexibility, including allowing overtime that could stretch shifts to 13 hours in a day. Under the new regulations, working hours that include overtime would be capped at 48 hours per week, with a maximum 150 overtime hours allowed per year.

Unions argue the new rules leave workers vulnerable to labor abuses by employers.

"We say no to the 13-hour (shift). Exhaustion is not development, human tolerance has limits," the private sector umbrella union, the General Confederation of Workers of Greece, said in a statement. The union called for a 37½-hour working week and the return of collective bargaining agreements.

PARIS (AP) — Perennial crowd favorite and former world No. 6-ranked Gael Monfils says he will retire at the end of the 2026 tennis season.

At 39, the French veteran renowned for his spectacular style of play announced Wednesday in a message posted on social media that "the year ahead will be my last as a professional tennis player."

"I held a racket in my hands for the first time at two and a half, and began playing professionally at 18," Monfils wrote. "The opportunity to turn my passion into a profession is a privilege I have cherished during every match and moment of my 21-year career. Though this game means the world to me, I am tremendously as peace with my decision."

Monfils has won 13 titles. His best results at Grand Slam tournaments are two semifinals, at the 2008 French Open and 2016 U.S. Open.

"While I came close, I never did win a Grand Slam during my career. I won't pretend that expect to do so during the next year," Monfils said.

Following in the footsteps of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet, he is the last member of a group of French players dubbed "The Musketeers" to call it quits.

In January, Monfils became the oldest player to win an ATP Tour title, achieving the feat in Auckland, New Zealand when he claimed his 13th tour title 20 years after his first at the age of 38 years, 132 days. He took over from Roger Federer, who was 38 years, 74 days old when he won the final tour title of his career, the Swiss Indoor title at Basel in 2019.

Monfils married Ukrainian player Elena Svitolina in 2021 and the couple have a daughter together. Monfils is currently ranked 53rd.

"To every person who ever cheered or shouted 'Allez, Gael!' in real life or at a TV screen: your energy and love are truly everything to me," Monfils said.

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev mocked U.S. President Donald Trump, saying that the United States had not sent nuclear submarines to Russian shores as Trump had promised.

Trump on Tuesday cast Medvedev as "a stupid person" and said that he had moved a "submarine or two" to the coast of Russia. He said in August that he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be moved to the "appropriate regions" in response to threats from Medvedev.

"New episode of the thriller series," Medvedev said on X in English. "Trump once again brought up the subs he allegedly 'sent to the Russian shores' insisting they are 'very well hidden."

"As the saying goes, it's hard to find a black cat in a dark room — especially if it's not there," Medvedev said.

By David Stanway

(Reuters) -A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck in waters near the island of Cebu in the central Philippines late on Tuesday, the deadliest to hit the country since 2013, with more than 60 people reported dead and dozens injured.

The Southeast Asian archipelago is one of the most seismically vulnerable countries on the planet, often experiencing more than 1,000 quakes a year.

According to Earthquake List, which compiles data from global earthquake monitoring agencies the U.S. Geological Survey and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, in the past decade the Philippines has experienced an average of 826 quakes a year, amounting to about one every 10 hours.

That compares to 2,053 quakes per year in Indonesia, 1,777 in Mexico, 1,025 in Japan and 734 in Papua New Guinea. The United States saw an average of 176 per year over the period, according to Earthquake List.

PACIFIC 'RING OF FIRE'

The Philippines lies on a complicated tectonic subsystem that forms part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an earthquake-prone belt of volcanoes stretching from South America to the Russian Far East. It is also vulnerable to tsunamis generated by earthquakes in other parts of the western Pacific.

The Cebu quake event was a relatively shallow "strike-slip" event in which two plates brush up against each other at different speeds.

The deadliest recorded earthquake in the Philippines in recent decades took place at Moro Gulf in 1976, measuring 8.0 and causing at least 5,000 deaths.

A quake of a magnitude 7.8 also hit the densely populated island of Luzon in 1990, killing more than 1,600 people and causing lasting infrastructure damage.

Following is a list of the biggest and deadliest earthquakes to hit the Philippines in recent years:

August 2024 - Caraga earthquake (magnitude 6.8). No casualties, but at a depth of only 20 miles (32 km), nearly 30,000 people were affected and 193 homes damaged.

November 2023 - Mindanao earthquake (magnitude 6.7). Killed 11 people and 730 reported injured. Another quake struck Mindanao a month later, with a more powerful magnitude of 7.6, killing three and injuring dozens more.

July 2022 - Luzon earthquake (magnitude 7.1). Eleven people killed, 615 injured in a quake that was felt in the capital Manila.

December 2019 - Davao earthquake (magnitude 6.8) Thirteen people were killed and 210 injured.

October 2019 - Cotabato earthquakes, magnitudes 6.4 to 6.6. Death toll of 31, 778 injured.

April 2019 - Luzon earthquake (magnitude 6.1). Eighteen people dead, 256 injured.

October 2013 - Bohol earthquake (magnitude 7.2). Death toll 222, 976 injured.

Key Points -

The threat of tariffs could cause many stocks on the market to sink, but some are well-equipped to handle it.

Netflix's core business is mostly insulated from tariffs, and the stock has excellent long-term prospects.

Coca-Cola's local manufacturing and consistent dividends make it a top tariff play.

10 stocks we like better than Netflix ›

U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies have been the talk of the town this year on Wall Street, perhaps even more so than exciting investing opportunities like artificial intelligence. The administration has sought to impose tariffs on imported goods coming from most countries.

This is a constantly evolving situation. According to research conducted by The Motley Fool, ongoing legal challenges are being raised regarding the legitimacy of certain tariffs. Others are subject to various exemptions, and trade deals are being negotiated.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »

With all that going on, it's a good idea for investors to adjust their portfolios accordingly and buy shares of companies that can navigate this challenge. No corporation is entirely tariff-proof, but let's consider why Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) and Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) could be attractive investments in the current landscape.

Two people watching TV.

1. Netflix

Netflix provides a digital service. Unlike companies that manufacture physical products abroad and ship them back into the U.S., the streaming specialist won't have to deal with tariffs on imported goods it intends to sell to customers. The situation could still harm the company in various ways, perhaps if tariffs lead to inflation and increased expenses and costs for Netflix. Even so, the company appears better positioned than most to handle the current situation, especially since its business is currently running smoothly.

Netflix's revenue, earnings, and free cash flow have been growing at a good clip in recent years.

NFLX Revenue (Quarterly) Chart

NFLX Revenue (Quarterly) data by YCharts.

While streaming now seems ubiquitous, the fact that Netflix continues to expand its ecosystem suggests that there is still at least some remaining whitespace to be exploited. The data on television viewing time supports this. Netflix is currently second only to YouTube (which, strictly speaking, isn't a direct competitor) among streaming platforms in terms of TV viewing time in the U.S., but the company still captured just 8.7% of that total in August.

Has Netflix peaked? Hardly. In August, streaming accounted for less than half of TV time in the U.S. That number should grow substantially over the long run, taking Netflix along with it. Then there is the more recent advertising opportunity for the company. Netflix's ad business may still be in its infancy, but it boasts significant potential due to the company's competitive advantage: Its vast data trove. Netflix has precise statistics on viewer preferences and habits -- what people watch, when they watch it, and for how long.

This data can allow it to launch precise, targeted, and successful ad campaigns. Growing engagement will only strengthen this competitive edge, which in turn helps Netflix direct its content production strategy effectively, ultimately leading to great success.

Netflix's robust and (mostly) tariff-proof business can help it perform relatively well, despite an uncertain economic landscape, and the company's economic moat and prospects also make it an attractive long-term option. Although the streaming giant has crushed the market this year, its shares remain a buy.

2. Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola, a well-known beverage company, is a great tariff-resistant play for several reasons. First, as a leading consumer staples company in a defensive industry, it is likely to perform relatively well even when the economy slows. The word "staple" here is key. It refers to products that people buy consistently, regardless of economic conditions. So, even if tariffs lead to a meltdown, Coca-Cola should fare better than most.

Second, although the company manufactures and sells its products in nearly every country, Coca-Cola's manufacturing tends to be local. The company makes most of the products sold to U.S. consumers in the U.S., which limits the degree to which tariffs will affect its sales.

Third, Coca-Cola is a terrific dividend stock. The company is a member of the elite Dividend Kings club, which is comprised of corporations that have increased their payouts for at least 50 consecutive years. Coca-Cola's streak stands at 63.

Why is this relevant? If economic and market conditions worsen and volatility increases, consistent and reliable income from dividends can help mitigate market losses -- provided, of course, that a company does not suspend its dividend program. Coca-Cola should remain in place regardless of the circumstances. The beverage leader's long-term streak shows that it can navigate almost any situation while still raising its dividends.

Lastly, Coca-Cola has solid long-term prospects. The company has remained successful thanks to its brand name, which carries considerable cachet, and its ability to evolve along with market needs. Coca-Cola has a vast portfolio of products and consistently launches new products to respond to customer needs. The company should remain a resilient business for many years to come, regardless of how the evolving tariff wars ultimately conclude.

OBERGOMS, Switzerland (Reuters) -Switzerland's glaciers melted considerably over the past 12 months to log their fourth-largest reduction in ice volume on record, monitoring body GLAMOS said on Wednesday.

A winter with little snow, especially in the northeastern part of the Swiss Alps, followed by heat waves in June, caused the glaciers to lose 3% of their total ice mass, according to this year's report by GLAMOS and the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation.

"This is really a lot," said Matthias Huss, the director of GLAMOS, whose reports cover the October-September hydrological year.

Although the ice melt was not as extreme as in 2022 and 2023, when the glaciers lost 5.9% and 4.4% respectively, the trend is clear.

Switzerland has had its worst decade of ice melt on record, with one quarter of glacier volume lost since 2015, Huss added, speaking with Reuters during a visit to the Rhone Glacier in Valais canton.

The Rhone Glacier was the biggest glacier in Europe during the Ice Age, but has rapidly shrunk, losing on average about 1.5 meters in thickness this year.

According to GLAMOS, about one hundred glaciers in Switzerland have vanished between 2016 and 2022, and it says that most could disappear by the end of the century.

"Unfortunately, there is not much we can do to save the glaciers ... They will continue retreating anyway, even if the climate is stabilised today," said Huss.

But if carbon dioxide emissions were to fall to zero globally over the next 30 years, then up to 200 Swiss glaciers at high elevation could be saved, he added.

Swiss glaciers below 3,000 metres above sea level suffered in particular this year. The once healthy Silvretta Glacier in northeastern Switzerland had a huge ice melt following the lowest amount of snowfall for the area since measurements began some 100 years ago, the report found.

Huss also warned that the shrinking of glaciers contributes to the destabilisation of mountains. That can trigger avalanches of rock and ice, such as the devastating glacier collapse that destroyed the village of Blatten in Valais in May of this year.

Meanwhile, Berkshire Hathaway's billionaire boss has added nearly 20 million shares of a historically inexpensive legal monopoly since Sept. 30, 2024.

10 stocks we like better than Sirius XM ›

For the better part of six decades, Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A)(NYSE: BRK.B) CEO Warren Buffett has been crushing Wall Street's benchmark index, the S&P 500, in the return column. As of midday on Sept. 26, he'd overseen a return for his company's Class A shares (BRK.A) that exceeds 6,080,000% on a cumulative basis over 60 years, which is about 137 times greater than the total return, including dividends, of the S&P 500 over the same timeline.

Delivering a nearly 20% annualized return has earned the Oracle of Omaha an extensive following. Some investors even choose to ride his coattails and mirror his trading activity. This can be done thanks to quarterly Form 13F filings and occasional Form 4 filings.

A 13F is a required filing no later than 45 calendar days following the end to a quarter for institutional investors with at least $100 million in assets under management. It spills the beans on which stocks, exchange-traded funds, and select options Wall Street's savviest money managers purchased and sold in the latest quarter.

Meanwhile, Form 4 is a required filing for directors and executives of a public company, as well as beneficial owners who hold a 10% or greater stake in a company. Any time shares are sold or purchased by these individuals, Form 4 must be filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission within two business days of the transaction.

Thanks to Berkshire Hathaway's 13Fs and Form 4s, we know its billionaire boss has been a persistent seller of Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) stock over the last year. However, these filings also point to significant buying activity in a historically cheap legal monopoly in three of the last four quarters.

Warren Buffett has sent more than 427 million shares of Bank of America to the chopping block

There's not a sector that Warren Buffett understands better or has had more confidence investing in over the years than financials. He's keenly aware that banks and insurers are cyclical and will ebb-and-flow with the health of the U.S. and global economy. This is a good thing when you consider that periods of economic growth last disproportionately longer than recessions.

However, the Oracle of Omaha has been a decisive net seller of stocks for 11 straight quarters, to the aggregate tune of $177.4 billion. A meaningful chunk of this selling traces back to Bank of America, which is commonly known as "BofA."

Beginning July 17, 2024 (we know this precise date thanks to Form 4 filings), Buffett began green-lighting the sale of BofA stock and hasn't stopped. A position that peaked at north of 1.03 billion shares has been reduced 427,584,631 shares, or 41%, from July 17, 2024 to June 30, 2025.

One logical explanation behind this selling is simple profit-taking. Although Buffett preaches a long-term investing approach, he spent some time during Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting in May 2024 discussing the advantages of locking in investment gains with the peak marginal corporate income tax rate being historically low. While he was discussing Apple in the context of locking in sizable gains, Bank of America is another holding where Berkshire is up big.

The worry for investors is that this selling might be fueled by more than just benign profit-taking.

For example, no money-center bank was a bigger beneficiary of the Federal Reserve's aggressive rate-hiking cycle from March 2022 to July 2023 than BofA. But this pendulum swings in both directions, which means rate-easing cycles can disproportionately work against Bank of America's interest income-earning potential.

The silver lining on this front is that the central bank is taking a very methodical and telegraphed approach to its monetary policy moves, which is fantastic news for lenders and big banks like BofA. Nevertheless, being the most interest-sensitive of the big banks can bring promise or peril, depending on the Fed's stance on monetary policy.

The other potential issue is that Bank of America stock is no longer cheap. When Buffett initially invested in BofA preferred stock in August 2011, its common shares were valued at a 62% discount to its listed book value. As of this writing, BofA stock is valued at a 41% premium to book.

Berkshire's billionaire boss can't stop buying shares of this inexpensive legal monopoly

While selling has been commonplace for Warren Buffett for almost three years, there are a few stocks that have caught his fancy amid a historically pricey market. One of these companies happens to be a legal public monopoly: satellite-radio operator Sirius XM Holdings (NASDAQ: SIRI).

Following the merger of Sirius XM common stock with multiple classes of Sirius XM tracking stock (Liberty Sirius XM) in September 2024, as well as its historic 1-for-10 reverse split, Berkshire Hathaway held 105,155,029 shares. Since Sept 30, 2024, Buffett has overseen the addition of:

Q4 2024: 12,313,544 shares added

Q1 2025: 2,308,119 shares added

Q2 2025: no shares added

Q3 2025: 5,030,425 shares added (124,807,117 total shares owned)

Even though Buffett's company won't report its 13F detailing third-quarter trading activity until mid-November, we know that more than 5 million shares of Sirius XM stock was purchased in late July and early August because of required Form 4 filings. With this purchase, Berkshire Hathaway's stake in America's legal satellite-radio monopoly grew to more than 37%!

The Oracle of Omaha has always been a huge fan of businesses with sustainable moats. Though Sirius XM still fights for listeners with terrestrial and online radio providers, it's the only holder of satellite radio licenses. This affords it a level of subscription pricing power that other radio providers often lack.

What might be even more of a selling point for Buffett is Sirius XM's revenue mix. Traditional radio companies generate almost all of their revenue from selling ads, which is a fantastic operating model during long periods of economic expansion, but can lead to lean times during short-lived recessions.

In comparison, Sirius XM brought in less than 20% of its net sales from advertising (via Pandora) through the first six months of 2025. The bulk of its revenue (about 77% of net sales) derives from subscriptions. People subscribing to its satellite-radio services are far less likely to cancel during periods of economic turbulence than businesses are to slash their marketing budgets. The end result is more consistent cash flow for Sirius XM in any economic climate.

Warren Buffett is also a fan of hearty capital-return programs -- and Sirius XM Holdings delivers. Its dividend yield is approaching 5%, or roughly four times higher than the yield of the benchmark S&P 500. The company repurchases its own stock from time to time, which can help boost earnings per share (EPS).

To tie things together, Sirius XM stock is historically cheap. Shares are valued at 7.4 times forecast EPS for 2026, which works out to a 43% discount to its average forward price-to-earnings multiple over the last five years.

Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie

Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson changed the world with the 1985 charity single "We Are the World" — but Richie wishes Jackson had changed his clothes.

"Michael was very close with his family, but once he went solo, making these monster albums, movies, and videos, he was in charge of his own ship. His day-to- day life was what you could call eccentric and extremely chaotic," Richie remembered in his new memoir Truly, in which he recalls pulling together stars like Tina Turner, Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan for the song, which was produced by Quincy Jones.

"Quincy used to tease [Jackson] with the nickname 'Smelly,'" Richie recalled. "Michael would laugh too, realizing that he was oblivious to the fact that he hadn't changed or washed his clothes for a couple of days. Or so. We all have our quirks. Michael didn't buy clothes like you or me. He couldn't just go to department stores or Beverly Hills boutiques. He was on tour performing in the elaborate costumes made for him by his stylists, or he was in his pajama bottoms and slippers in the studio, or he was in his going-out attire. Or he was at home in something loose and comfortable so he could practice his dance moves."

"Some of his thrown-together looks — white socks and black loafers, say — became global fashion statements. Those loafers were fantastic for moonwalking or going up on pointe," Richie recalled, but remembered that "whenever Michael came to visit me, he was wearing whatever — jeans and a T-shirt. And the jeans were either falling off him or too short to even be jeans and, well, smelly."

Richie said that he would ask the "Billie Jean" icon, "Where'd you get those jeans, Michael?" Jackson would tell him that he'd walk into any clothing store, and the proprietor would just give him a pair.

"I'd suggest he go back and get a pair that fit," Richie cracked.

"On the road, if Michael sent his clothes to the hotel cleaners, only half of the items would come back. Everything else was kept for souvenirs. He just got into the habit of wearing the same pants until they were unwearable, he explained, but clarified that he and Jones' ribbing of Jackson was good-natured: "We teased him, but it was out of love so he didn't mind."

Richie originally conceived of a charity single akin to Bob Geldof's 1984 "Do They Know It's Christmas?" which united Bono, Sting, George Michael, and more U.K.- and Ireland-based music stars to raise money for the 1983-1985 famine in Ethiopia. The following year, Richie felt compelled to do something as the famine raged on, but believed it was "important that Black artists take the lead on such a project."

He originally sought to collaborate with Stevie Wonder, but couldn't reach him. So Jones, who was working with Jackson on a string of blockbuster albums, set the two musicians up, and the supergroup USA for Africa was born.

"A dozen years had passed since the Commodores had last opened for the J-5," Richie said, noting that his Motown group The Commodores initially signed to the famous label as a support act for Jackson's family band, The Jackson 5.

"As much as our lives and careers had changed, Michael and I remained close. Sometimes I played big brother to him or we switched roles and he became the wise counsel to me," Richie recalled.

"We Are the World" ended up uniting Jackson, Richie, Turner, Dylan, Nelson, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, the Pointer Sisters, and a whole host of other music artists. The single ultimately raised over $80 million, or more than $225 million adjusted for inflation. The song has been reprised several times for different charitable causes over the years, and in 2009, versions of the song were performed at Jackson's funeral.

On Tuesday, Timereleased its list of "The World's Most Influential Rising Stars."

Every year, Time chooses 100 artists, innovators, politicians, influencers, leaders and advocates who they believe are shaping the future and defining the next generation. After they choose their class of nominees, they ask the nominee's close friend to write about them.

One of the nominees includes Lainey Wilson, a country musician who rose to fame thanks to her breakout hit song "Things a Man Oughta Know" in 2021. Miranda Lambert, who is also a famous country singer and claims to be a big fan of the 33-year-old singer, honored her on Time.

"She is such a light. She's funny and she's fun, and she has a spirit about her that brings joy to any room she walks in. Knowing her off the stage and on, I feel like I'm looking at the same person all the time. That's pretty rare. What she does doesn't define her. Who she is defines her, and that's real authenticity," Lambert, 41, wrote. "She lives and breathes songs, and you can see that passion in her eyes; it's all about the music for her, and she lets the music lead."

Lambert, long established as one of country music's biggest stars, has often praised Wilson for her songwriting talent and authenticity. Wilson has also cited Lambert as both a role model and a supportive presence as she's risen in the industry over the past six years.

Wilson has quickly become one of country music's brightest stars. Raised in the small town of Baskin, Louisiana, Wilson moved to Nashville after graduating high school in 2011 to pursue her music dreams. Her 2020 album Sayin' What I'm Thinkin' introduced her to the world, but it was her 2021 single "Things a Man Oughta Know" that became a chart-topping hit and earned her widespread recognition.

Since then, Wilson has collected numerous accolades, including multiple Country Music Association Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and a Grammy for Best Country Album for her 2022 album Bell Bottom Country. Outside of music, she has also expanded her career into acting with a role on Yellowstone.

Currently, the "Wildflowers and Wild Horses" singer is on her third headlining tour, the Whirlwind World Tour, in support of her fifth studio album, Whirlwind. She is set to perform at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Thursday evening. It was also announced on Tuesday that the singer will be hosting the 2025 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards on Nov. 19.

"I'm really proud of how she represents the lifestyle we both love and the music we both love," Lambert concluded in her message. "She's out of the gate going 100 miles an hour."

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China has named Liu Haixing, a diplomat with experience in European affairs, at the top of its International Department, state media said Wednesday.

He replaces Liu Jianchao, who has not been seen in public since July amid speculation he has been detained over disciplinary reasons.

The International Department is the Communist Party's diplomatic arm, tasked with establishing connections with political parties in other countries.

Liu Haixing, 62, spent much of his career serving in a variety of diplomatic positions in Europe. Between 2009 and 2012, he was a minister with the Chinese Embassy in France, where he had earlier studied public administration, according to his resume, posted on the Foreign Ministry's website.

Upon his return to Beijing, he served as assistant foreign minister and director-general of the Department of European Affairs.

His last posting was that of executive vice-director of the general office of the National Security Commission of the Communist Party's Central Committee, a top ruling body.

His appointment, which was announced earlier on the International Department's website, raises questions about the whereabouts of his predecessor, Liu Jianchao.

Liu Jianchao, who is unrelated to Liu Haixing, had served as head of the International Department since June 2022. He had traveled extensively abroad as part of China's post-pandemic diplomatic drive, and his name was circulated as a potential new foreign minister.

Liu Jianchao has not been seen in public since late July, after he returned from a work trip abroad. The Wall Street Journal reported sources saying he has been detained for questioning as part of a disciplinary probe.

His disappearance followed the high-profile vanishing in June 2023 of then-Foreign Minister Qin Gang, who had only gotten the job seven months earlier. His predecessor, Wang Yi, returned to the posting.

The Journal reported that an internal party investigation had found that Qin had engaged in an extra-marital affair during his previous stint as Beijing's ambassador to Washington.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has led a relentless campaign of disciplinary purges since his appointment in 2012. More than 6 million officials have been punished for corruption and misconduct, though critics say he has also used the campaign to remove some of his opponents and consolidate power.

From a dozen to just one: Scarred "32 Chunk" was crowned the fat bear champion of Alaska's Brooks River, organizers announced Tuesday.

The annual competition drew in tens of thousands of votes and lasted a week.

Chunk beat out rival bear "856" in the final polling, 96,350 votes to 63,725, the organization that runs the livestream cameras at the Katmai National Park and Preserve said.

"Chunk the Hunk. The Chunkster. 32 Chunk," the organization, Explore, posted on X. "All hail the new king of Brooks River."

Fat Bear Week, a competition that began in 2014, opened for voting on Sept. 23 with 12 contenders.

The bears have been trying to fatten up by gorging on salmon — including at times by only eating the skin, brains and eggs to focus on the most calories — before hibernating for the winter.

Voters were instructed to choose "the bear you believe best exemplifies fatness and success in brown bears."

Chunk is a male bear described as "very large" and weighing around 1,200 pounds. He has a distinctive scar and a broken jaw, which is healing but never expected to return to normal, according to Explore's website.

"The timing of the injury during the brown bear mating season and the nature of it strongly suggest that Chunk was injured in a fight with another bear," the organization said.

Katmai National Park and Preserve, on the Alaska Peninsula southwest of Anchorage, is known for its brown bears. The Brooks Camp at the mouth of the Brooks River draws visitors every year to watch the large animals.

Salmon return upstream on the Brooks throughout the summer to spawn, and the bears are there to meet them with open jaws. Then, in September, the fish are weakened and dying and bears return to again chow down, the park says on its website.

Katmai's bears usually go to their dens to hibernate in October and November, according to the park.
