CINCINNATI (AP) — Austin Hays hit a tiebreaking two-run homer and Matt McLain went deep for the second consecutive game to back a solid start by Brady Singer as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Sunday to snap a five-game skid and avoid a series sweep.

Elly De La Cruz hit his 28th double leading off the fifth inning against Andre Pallante (6-13), and Hays followed with his 12th homer for a 5-3 lead.

Hays doubled and scored on Ke'Bryan Hayes' two-out single for a 6-4 lead in the seventh, and McLain capped the scoring with his 13th homer — a solo shot off Andre Granillo in the eighth.

Singer (12-9) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Tony Santillan struck out the side in the eighth and Emilio Pagán did the same in the ninth for his 26th save.

TWINS 7, PADRES 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Byron Buxton set a career best with his 29th home run and Joe Ryan pitched seven scoreless innings as Minnesota beat San Diego.

Buxton and Royce Lewis each had two hits for the Twins, who took two of three games in the series. San Diego began the day a game behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Ryan (13-7) scattered five hits and struck out eight. He threw a season-high 104 pitches while bouncing back from a pair of rough outings.

The All-Star right-hander allowed 11 earned runs in nine innings over his previous two starts.

Buxton sent a changeup from Kyle Hart (3-3) three rows deep into the left-field seats for a two-run shot that gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead in the third. It was his fourth homer in four games, surpassing his previous season best of 28 home runs in 2022.

Recalled from Triple-A El Paso earlier in the day, Hart permitted three runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief as the Padres went with a bullpen game. He hit Luke Keaschall with a pitch to start the Minnesota fourth, and he scored on a single by James Outman.

Keaschall and Lewis had RBI singles in a three-run fifth to make it 6-0.

RED SOX 5, PIRATES 2

BOSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran hit an inside-the-park homer, Lucas Giolito pitched six effective innings and Boston beat Pittsburgh to avert a three-game sweep.

In a tight race for one of three American League wild cards, the Red Sox won for the eighth time in 11 games.

Alexander Canario hit a solo homer over the Green Monster for Pittsburgh, which had won nine of 12.

Duran's three-run homer into the Fenway Park triangle in right-center field capped a four-run fifth against starter Mitch Keller (6-13), pushing Boston ahead 4-1.

Coming off his best start of the season, when he went eight shutout innings last Tuesday in a victory over Baltimore, Giolito (10-2) gave up a run and three hits. He struck out six and walked five.

Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his 27th save.

RAYS 7, NATIONALS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) — Brandon Lowe hit a grand slam in Tampa Bay's six-run second inning, Everson Pereira drove in two runs and the Rays beat Washington to sweep the three-game series.

Tampa Bay starter Ian Seymour (3-0) gave up four runs — one earned — and four hits with eight strikeouts.

Pete Fairbanks pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 24th save this season. Dylan Crews singled to lead off the ninth and moved to third on a single by Daylen Lile, who tried to stretch it into a double but was thrown out by Pereira at second before Brady House struck out swinging to end the game.

Josh Lowe tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pereira to make 7-0 in the third.

Jacob Young doubled to drive in House in the third. Riley Adams walked to lead off the fourth and scored when Crews reached on a fielding error by third baseman Junior Caminero. House singled to drive in two runs that made it 7-4.

Nationals starter Brad Lord (4-8) allowed seven runs and five hits in three innings.

BLUE JAYS 8, BREWERS 4

TORONTO (AP) — Myles Straw and Nathan Lukes each drove in two runs, George Springer reached base three times and scored twice and Toronto beat Milwaukee to avoid a three-game sweep.

Tommy Nance (2-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning as Toronto improved to 59-4 when scoring at least five runs.

Nance was one of five relievers who combined for five shutout innings in relief of a shaky Max Scherzer.

William Contreras hit a two-run home run, his 17th, and Brice Turang added a solo shot, his 16th, but the Brewers failed to set a club record with a 22nd win in August. Milwaukee went 21-9 this month.

The Brewers still own the best record in baseball at 85-53.

Scherzer allowed four runs and a season-high nine hits in four innings.

MARINERS 4, GUARDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Julio Rodríguez drove in two runs with an infield hit and Seattle snapped a seven-game road losing streak with a victory over Cleveland to salvage the three-game series finale.

With a combined two-hitter, the Mariners extended their lead to three games over the Guardians for the third AL wild-card spot. Seattle entered play two games up on Kansas City.

Randy Arozarena hit a two-run homer for the Mariners, who got six strong innings from Bryce Miller (4-5). The right-hander gave up just two hits — on consecutive pitches in the third.

Gabe Speier and Matt Brash each pitched a perfect inning and Andrés Muñoz worked the ninth for his 32nd save.

MARLINS 5, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Sandy Alcantara pitched seven strong innings, Agustín Ramírez hit a two-run homer and Miami defeated New York in a game that got testy.

The scappy Marlins took three of four from New York after losing their previous seven series. The Mets finished 11-17 in August despite scoring 177 runs and hitting 53 homers — both franchise records for a calendar month.

New York leads Cincinnati by four games in the race for the last National League wild card.

Alcantara (7-11) allowed four hits and struck out six. He carried a shutout into the seventh, when he gave up a leadoff single to Jeff McNeil and plunked Mark Vientos with a pitch. Alcantara and Vientos stared each other down before the benches and bullpens emptied, though no punches were thrown as players milled around the mound.

Alcantara induced a pair of forceouts, the second of which scored McNeil, before striking out Starling Marte to end the inning. The right-hander has a 2.82 ERA in his past eight starts after opening the season with a 7.14 ERA through 19 outings.

Senga allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings. He has a 5.90 ERA in nine starts since coming off the injured list July 11.

ANGELS 3, ASTROS 0

HOUSTON (AP) — José Soriano and two relievers combined for a two-hitter and Oswald Peraza hit his first home run since a trade from the Yankees to lead Los Angeles to a win over the Houston.

Soriano (10-9) allowed one hit and struck out eight in seven innings. Luis García allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth and Kenley Jansen threw a perfect ninth for his 25th save.

There were two outs in the fifth when Peraza connected off Hunter Brown (10-7) into the bullpen in right-center field to put the Angels up 1-0. His homer comes after his two-run single in the ninth inning Saturday helped Los Angeles to a 4-1 victory that snapped a three-game skid.

Brown allowed three hits and a run with five strikeouts in six innings. McCullers Jr. allowed three hits and two runs in his first relief appearance since 2018.

TIGERS 5, ROYALS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tarik Skubal pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, the Tigers scored four times off Michael Wacha in the fifth inning, and Detroit went on to beat Kansas City in the rubber game of its three-game set.

Skubal (12-4) struck out four and walked one while bouncing back from his first loss in more than six weeks. Jake Rogers drove in two runs for Detroit, while Colt Keith and Gleyber Torres also drove in runs.

It was a crucial game between AL Central rivals. The Tigers began the day with a half-game lead over East-leading Toronto for the best record in the American League, while Kansas City had climbed within two games of Seattle in the wild-card race.

Wacha (8-11) was matching Skubal into the fifth, allowing a single baserunner while striking out four. But things suddenly went awry, beginning with a leadoff walk to Spencer Torkelson and a one-out single by Zach McKinstry.

Rogers followed with a fly ball that center fielder Tyler Tolbert badly misplayed, resulting in a two-run triple. Keith added a line drive that found a gap for a two-run double, and Torres a grounder that got through the infield to make it 4-0.

Wacha left after 4 2/3 innings. He was charged with four runs and four hits and a walk.

WHITE SOX 3, YANKEES 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Lenyn Sosa hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning and Chicago cooled off New York with a victory.

Sosa drove a 1-2 sinker from Tim Hill over the wall in center field for his 18th homer, extending his career high. Hill (4-4) retired his first two batters before Sosa went deep.

Cam Booser (2-4) got one out for the win. After Booser issued a leadoff walk to Trent Grisham in the ninth, Mike Vasil retired Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger for his third save.

New York had won a season-high seven in a row. It also had a nine-game road win streak.

The Yankees fell three games back of AL East-leading Toronto, which held off Milwaukee for an 8-4 win.

ROCKIES 6, CUBS 5

DENVER (AP) — Pinch-hitter Mickey Moniak hit a walk-off RBI triple, Tanner Gordon struck out a career-high nine and Colorado beat Chicago to avoid a series sweep.

The major league-worst Rockies snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 39-98. They finished August with 11 wins, their most in any month this season.

Orlando Arcia had three hits and an RBI for Colorado, and Braxton Fulford added two hits and an RBI. Ryan Ritter had two hits and scored the winning run, and Brenton Doyle drove in two runs.

Gordon allowed two earned runs in six innings. Juan Mejia (2-1) picked up the win, striking out two in a perfect ninth. Daniel Palencia (1-5) took the loss.

DODGERS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pinch-hitter Will Smith homered leading off the bottom of the ninth inning to give Los Angeles a victory over Arizona that prevented a three-game sweep.

Los Angeles took a two-game lead in the NL West over rival San Diego, which lost 7-2 at Minnesota.

Smith sent the second pitch he saw from reliever John Curtiss (2-1) a projected 420 feet into the left-center stands. His 17th home run of the season saved the Dodgers after they blew a late lead.

Corbin Carroll tied it 4-all by launching a three-run homer off Tanner Scott with two outs in the eighth.

Blake Treinen (1-2) pitched a perfect inning for the win.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one run in seven innings and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts for the Dodgers. He retired his first 10 batters before Ketel Marte bunted for a single.

RANGERS 9, ATHLETICS 6

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Joc Pederson homered, doubled and drove in three runs, Jacob deGrom struck out six in five scoreless innings, and Texas beat the Athletics to sweep the three-game series.

DeGrom (10-6) allowed two hits and walked one to help the Rangers win their fifth straight game.

Josh Smith walked to leadoff the game, Wyatt Langford struck out and Pederson hit a 3-2 pitch from J.T. Ginn (2-6) down the line and over the wall in right field to make it 2-0.

Josh Jung homered off Ginn to lead off the second and doubled to drive in Adolis García in the ninth.

Smith hit an RBI double and scored when Pederson doubled with two out in the fifth to give the Rangers a 5-0 lead.

Langford drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Ezequiel Duran before Helman singled to drive in Smith and make it 7-0.

GIANTS 13, ORIOLES 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers homered, doubled and drove in two runs to help Justin Verlander earn career win No. 265 as San Francisco beat Baltimore to take two of three games in their series.

Verlander (3-10) struck out a season-high 10 in five shutout innings. He threw 121 pitches — his most since June 2018. He allowed three hits and walked four.

The 42-year-old Verlander reached 10 strikeouts for the 73rd time and first since he had 10 against Philadelphia on Oct. 4, 2022. He tied Jim McCormick for 39th place in wins and pulled within four strikeouts of Gaylord Perry (3,534) for eighth on the career list.

Devers homered off Tomoyuki Sagano (10-7) for a 1-0 lead in the first. It was his 28th of the season and 13th for the Giants.

Drew Gilbert, Heliot Ramos and Devers had consecutive singles in the third for a two-run lead, and Willy Adames added a sacrifice fly.

Gilbert hit a two-run triple before scoring on Ramos' single for a 7-0 advantage in the fourth. Devers doubled to chase Sugano, who allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Dominic Smith had an RBI single off Corbin Martin in a three-run sixth. Devers, Ramos and Gilbert each had three of the Giants' 16 hits.

Spencer Bivens allowed two runs in the ninth but pitched the final three innings for his first career save.

BRAVES 3, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Drake Baldwin broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-run homer and Atlanta avoided a four-game sweep with a win over Philadelphia.

Braves rookie Hurston Waldrep pitched 5 2/3 strong innings. Jake Fraley came off the bench in the seventh and went 2 for 2. Michael Harris II also had two hits for Atlanta.

Brandon Marsh homered for the Phillies, who lead the NL East by six games over the New York Mets heading into September.

Matt Olson tied it at 1 with an RBI groundout for the Braves in the eighth.

Fraley started the ninth with an infield single off José Alvarado (4-2) and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Vidal Bruján struck out, but Baldwin drove Alvarado's first pitch, a 98 mph sinker, over the wall in left field.

Baldwin walked as a pinch hitter in the eighth and remained in the game at catcher.

Tyler Kinley (4-3) tossed a perfect eighth and Raisel Iglesias struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 23rd save in 28 chances.

Waldrep continued to impress, giving up one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. After starting two games in 2024, the 23-year-old right-hander, the No. 24 overall draft pick in 2023, was called up to the Braves on Aug. 2 and has a 1.01 ERA in six outings, including five starts.

Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out seven and walking one.

The Seattle Sounders had an absolutely dominant win over Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup final, earning a 3-0 win and winning their first Leagues Cup trophy. But after the game, as the Sounders started to celebrate, Miami forward Luis Suárez did not take the loss well.

Suárez sparked a fight between the two sides moments after the whistle blew, grabbing a celebrating Obed Vargas and put him into a headlock. The action led to a large scrum as both sides got into each other's faces, as defender Yeimar tried to break up the fight.

Later, Suárez got in the face of a member of the Sounders' staff, reportedly a member of the security team. Video shows Suárez seemingly spitting into the staff member's face.

Justin Theroux looks happy as can be with his wife Nicole Brydon Bloom.

The celebrity couple tied the knot in March 2025 and were just spotted at the U.S. Open in New York. They were dressed casually for the annual tennis tournament — with Bloom, 31, in a black-and-white striped top and black pants, with a black sweater draped over her shoulders. Theroux, 55, wore a green jacket and pants.

Nicole Brydon Bloom and Justin Theroux.Getty Images

Theroux and Bloom were first romantically linked in February 2023, as Us Weekly reported. They made things Instagram official in December 2023, after Theroux appeared in several photos from Bloom's twin sister's wedding.

Theroux — who is starring in The Devil Wears Prada 2 alongside Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway — proposed to Bloom in August 2024 at the Venice Film Festival, as People reported at the time. The pair had attended the premiere of Theroux's film Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, from celebrated director Tim Burton, the day before.

Theroux was married to Jennifer Aniston from 2015 to 2018. They began dating in 2011, as Us noted.

"In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation," the pair told Us in a joint statement in February 2018. "This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship."

Aniston, 56, opened up about the divorce six months later to InStyle.

"The misconceptions are 'Jen can't keep a man,' and 'Jen refuses to have a baby because she's selfish and committed to her career,'" she told the outlet in August 2018. "Or that I'm sad and heartbroken. First, with all due respect, I'm not heartbroken. And second, those are reckless assumptions. No one knows what's going on behind closed doors. No one considers how sensitive that might be for my partner and me. They don't know what I've been through medically or emotionally."

Country superstar Tim McGraw performed at the iconic Field of Dreams baseball diamond on Saturday, August 30, in Dyersville, Iowa, which was the first concert ever held at the historic movie location — but it was special for McGraw for a deeply personal reason.

The concert took place on what would have been his dad Tug McGraw's 81st birthday, he revealed in an Instagram post about the night.

"Would've been my dad's 81st birthday. I'm gonna be looking at the cornfield out there and seeing if Tug and Hank walk out and say hello tonight." — Tim McGraw

Tim McGraw's Instagram video

"Would've been my dad's 81st birthday. I'm gonna be looking at the cornfield out there and seeing if Tug and Hank walk out and say hello tonight," said McGraw on the video. In the caption, he added, "Iowa! You guys brought it last night! First ever concert @thefieldofdreamsmoviesite and on Tug's birthday too! Hard to top that!!!"

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tim McGraw (@thetimmcgraw)

In the video, he also shares footage of himself leading the crowd in singing happy birthday to his father, who died in 2004 at the age of just 59. Also, the "Hank" he mentions in the video is his Uncle Hank, aka Henry Thomas McGraw, the older brother of Tim's father Tug. Hank was also a baseball player in the 1960s.

Hank just passed away in July 2024, with Tim McGraw writing on Instagram at the time, "This weekend we lost the patriarch of the McGraw family. Our beloved 'Uncle Hank.' He was just an incredible man. He had a way of lighting up any room he walked into without trying."

Tim McGraw came to know his father later in life — his mother Betty D'Agostino met Tug McGraw when he was a minor league baseball player in Florida. When she found out she was pregnant, she was sent to live with relatives in Louisiana, which is where Tim McGraw was born and raised. He didn't know Tug was his father until he was 11, and the two didn't form a relationship until Tim was an adult, according to a 2021 interview McGraw did with Esquire.

But after they met, the two grew close, and when the elder McGraw got sick with a brain tumor, he actually lived out his final months at his son Tim's home with wife Faith Hill in Tennessee. The former major league pitcher died in early 2004, just months before McGraw's huge hit "Live Like You Were Dying" was released, which is about embracing life when faced with a terminal illness and even talks about a father-son bond with the lines "I was finally the husband that most the time I wasn't/ And I became a friend a friend would like to have/ And all of a sudden goin' fishin' wasn't such an imposition/ And I went three times that year I lost my dad."

The video for "Live Like You Were Dying" ends with a clip of Tug throwing the final strike for the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies' World Series win. In a 2021 interview with Matthew McConaughey on McGraw's podcast, McGraw admitted that recording that song was very special to him.

"['Live Like You Were Dying'] was sent to me in the middle of my father's diagnosis of glioblastoma brain cancer and going through all of his treatments," said McGraw on the podcast. "He stayed at my cabin out at the farm, and we were spending a lot of nights out there with my uncle and my brother, just hanging out, listening to music and watching football games. We spent a couple of weeks there before he passed away in the bedroom there in the cabin."

He added, "My Uncle Hank was there, my dad's older brother, and we had been recording all day and about three o'clock in the morning, I looked around at the band. I said, 'I think it's time to do this song.' We spent the next three hours up until sunup recording this song, and my uncle collapsed on a couch crying every time we did a pass of it. That's got to be one of the most special memories I have of making any music anywhere."

The storied Field of Dreams baseball field is where actor Kevin Costner, director Phil Alden Robinson and the rest of the crew built a real full-size baseball diamond in the middle of an Iowa cornfield for the 1989 film. One of the key plots in the film is Costner's character Ray Kinsella dealing with the strained relationship he had with his late father, John (Dwier Brown). Eventually, at the end of the film, Ray gets to "have a catch" with the young version of his father, who appeared there to play baseball.

While this is the first concert held at the Field of Dreams site, there are "ghost" baseball players who play for tourists throughout the summer, plus Major League Baseball has started hosting games there. The first two games were held on the second Thursday of August in 2021 and 2022; on August 24, MLB announced the return of the Field of Dreams game for 2026, which will be held between the Phillies and the Minnesota Twins in August 2026.

In medieval times, students often listened to teachers read from books, and some schools even discouraged students from writing down what they heard, Shirky said. (Getty Images) -

Amid the raging debate over the proper role of generative AI in schools, a vice provost at New York University suggested colleges revive some educational practices that date back to medieval times, namely focusing on oral instruction and examination in the classroom. That comes as students have increasingly relied on chatbots to complete assignments.

Educators have been struggling over how students should or should not use artificial intelligence, but one New York University official suggests going old school—really, really old school.

In a New York Times op-ed on Tuesday, NYU's vice provost for AI and technology in education, Clay Shirky, said he previously had counseled more "engaged uses" of AI where students use the technology to explore ideas and seek feedback, rather than "lazy AI use."

But that didn't work, as students continued using AI to write papers and skip the reading. Meanwhile, tools meant to detect AI cheating produce too many false positives to be reliable, he added.

"Now that most mental effort tied to writing is optional, we need new ways to require the work necessary for learning," Shirky explained. "That means moving away from take-home assignments and essays and toward in-class blue book essays, oral examinations, required office hours and other assessments that call on students to demonstrate knowledge in real time."

Such a shift would mark a return to much older practices that date back to Europe's medieval era, when books were scarce and a university education focused on oral instruction instead of written assignments.

In medieval times, students often listened to teachers read from books, and some schools even discouraged students from writing down what they heard, Shirky said. The emphasis on writing came hundreds of years later in Europe and reached U.S. schools in the late 19th century.

"Which assignments are written and which are oral has shifted over the years," he added. "It is shifting again, this time away from original student writing done outside class and toward something more interactive between student and professor or at least student and teaching assistant."

That may entail device-free classrooms as some students have used AI chatbots to answer questions when called on during class.

He acknowledged logistical challenges given that some classes have hundreds of students. In addition, an emphasis on in-class performance favors some students more than others.

"Timed assessment may benefit students who are good at thinking quickly, not students who are good at thinking deeply," Shirky said. "What we might call the medieval options are reactions to the sudden appearance of AI, an attempt to insist on students doing work, not just pantomiming it."

To be sure, professors are also using AI, not just students. While some use it to help develop a course syllabus, others are using it to help grade essays. In some cases, that means AI is grading an AI-generated assignment.

AI use by educators has also generated backlash among students. A senior at Northeastern University even filed a formal complaint and demanded a tuition refund after discovering her professor was secretly using AI tools to generate lecture notes.

Meanwhile, students are also getting mixed messages, hearing that the use of AI in school counts as cheating but also that not being able to use AI will hurt their job prospects. At the same time, some schools have no guidelines on AI.

"Whatever happens next, students know AI is here to stay, even if that scares them," Rachel Janfaza, founder of Gen Z-focused consulting firm Up and Up Strategies, wrote in the Washington Post on Thursday.

"They're not asking for a one-size-fits-all approach, and they're not all conspiring to figure out the bare minimum of work they can get away with. What they need is for adults to act like adults — and not leave it to the first wave of AI-native students to work out a technological revolution all by themselves."

1. Brookfield Renewable

Brookfield Renewable (NYSE: BEPC)(NYSE: BEP) is a leading global renewable power and decarbonization solutions provider. The company's hydroelectric, wind, and solar energy assets generate stable and growing cash flow.

Brookfield currently sells about 90% of the power it produces under long-term (14-year average remaining term) power purchase agreements (PPAs) with utilities and large corporate buyers. Most of those PPAs index power rates to inflation (70% of its revenue). As a result, Brookfield generates very predictable and steadily rising cash flow to support its high-yielding dividend (4.4% current yield).

The company expects that inflation-driven rate increases will grow its funds from operations (FFO) per share at a rate of around 2%-3% annually. Meanwhile, power prices, especially from renewable sources, are growing faster than inflation, driving Brookfield's view that it can lock in even higher rates as legacy PPAs expire and it signs new contracts at the higher market rates. These margin enhancement activities should add another 2% to 4% to its FFO per share each year.

Brookfield is also capitalizing on the massive and growing need for clean power by developing additional renewable energy capacity. The company has an extensive backlog of projects, driving its view that it can add another 4% to 6% to its FFO per share each year by developing new renewable power projects.

Additionally, Brookfield routinely acquires renewable energy platforms, further enhancing its growth. The company expects to grow its FFO per share at a rate of more than 10% annually in the future, supporting its plans to increase its dividend by 5% to 9% each year. Brookfield has grown its payout at a 6% compound annual rate since 2001.

2. Invitation Homes

Invitation Homes (NYSE: INVH) is a real estate investment trust (REIT) focused on owning and managing single-family rental properties. The company owns or manages over 110,000 homes across 16 top housing markets. It focuses on metro areas that benefit from strong employment and population growth rates, key drivers of housing demand.

Strong demand keeps occupancy rates high across its portfolio while driving healthy rent growth. Invitation Homes' same-store net operating income has grown at a 6.1% annual rate since its initial public offering in 2017. That provides it with a steadily rising income stream to support its dividend (3.8% current yield).

Invitation Homes routinely buys additional rental properties to drive even faster FFO per share growth. It will purchase properties on the open market, acquire portfolios from other investors, and buy homes directly from builders. The REIT currently has over 1,800 homes under contract from leading homebuilders. Invitation Homes' growth drivers -- portfolio expansion, rent growth, and its expanding third-party management platform -- should enable the REIT to continue increasing its dividend, which it has done every year since it went public.

3. Realty Income

Realty Income (NYSE: O) is also a REIT, though it has an entirely different focus. It invests in a diverse portfolio of commercial real estate (retail, industrial, gaming, and other properties) secured by long-term net leases with many of the world's leading companies. Net leases produce very stable rental income because tenants cover all property operating costs. This provides it with extremely steady cash flow to cover its monthly dividend (5.6% current yield).

The REIT aims to pay out about 75% of its adjusted FFO as dividends, retaining the rest to fund new income-generating investments. Realty Income also has one of the strongest balance sheets in the REIT sector, enabling it to steadily grow its portfolio.

Realty Income's ever-expanding portfolio has enabled the REIT to routinely increase its dividend. The company has raised its dividend payment 131 times since its public market listing in 1994, including for the past 111 quarters in a row.

Forever income stocks

Brookfield Renewable, Invitation Homes, and Realty Income align perfectly with my dividend strategy. Their strong financial profiles and consistent dividend growth should provide me with enduring, rising income. This combination of reliability and growth is why I never plan to sell these dividend stocks.

The financial sector is going through a rapid digital transformation, but cybercriminals are adapting just as quickly. Banks are forced to spend heavily to keep ahead of surging financial fraud. Across the Asia-Pacific region, 98% of financial institutions have had to scale up their compliance operations, driving costs above $45 billion. This surge reflects a shift toward integrated anti-fraud strategies, with governments and industries rolling out targeted national responses to counter increasingly sophisticated threats.

Hong Kong authorities have launched Scameter, a mobile fraud alert system that that notifies users of high-risk transactions. Singapore has introduced the Shared Responsibility Framework, which allocates scam loss responsibilities to financial institutions and telecommunication operators, encouraging the implementation of anti-scam measures. Similarly, Australia's Scam-Safe Accord is a cross-industry initiative across banks, building societies, credit unions aimed at elevating the standard of customer protection to counter scams.

These moves all represent a strong response to a growing regional threat, exemplified by Southeast Asia's "scam compounds": physical hubs where criminal syndicates orchestrate large-scale online scams, including identity fraud, phishing, fake investments and money laundering. Disguised as legitimate businesses, these sophisticated operations generate billions of dollars annually.

What's driving this evolution in financial crime? Increasingly, it's artificial intelligence. Criminal networks use AI to create synthetic identities, launch massive phishing campaigns, and bypass traditional security systems—and do so with fewer resources and in record time. While scam compounds are concentrated in Asia, the threat of financial fraud is global.

Yet as Asia's crime syndicates make headlines, the region's banks are quietly leading a shift in how to prevent fraud. Unlike other banks, which use AI for customers personalization and call center support, Asian banks are instead tapping AI to fight back against cybercriminals through fraud detection, identity verification, and anti-money laundering.

Why APAC is outpacing in AI-driven fraud defense

Asia's greater focus on AI-powered fraud prevention is due to the region's exposure to financial crime. Asian institutions are in the trenches when it comes to cybercrime, pushing them to rapidly adopt AI-driven strategies.

The scale of financial loss is staggering. In 2024 alone, the Asia-Pacific region lost an estimated $688 billion to fraud, nearly two-thirds of the world's total. Asians' rapid adoption of digital wallets and payment platforms makes matters worse: By outpacing the rollout of strong consumer protections, this usage opens doors for cybercriminals and is putting banks on the front lines.

Asian banks are leading the way in adopting ISO 20022, a new messaging standard that allows financial institutions to use AI to precisely detect anomalies and cut exposure to financial crime.

Same tech, different playbooks

Regional priorities are shifting as banks adopt AI. Asia-Pacific banks are focusing on fraud prevention and security, while European and U.S. institutions instead use AI to personalize products and customer service.

According to our research, just over half of organizations in the UK want to use generative AI to enhance the customer experience. That reflects the UK's hyper-competitive market, where user-friendly interactions are key to winning customer loyalty. The U.S. is splitting its AI focus between customers experience and operational automation, supporting both consumer demands for frictionless banking and internal goals for efficiency.

In contrast, 58% of Asia-Pacific banks are focusing their AI investments on fraud detection and anti-money laundering, well above the global average. Asia-Pacific banks face a high-risk landscape where criminal networks use generative AI for identity fraud, phishing and financial scams. As a result, the region prioritizes cybersecurity, forging a sharper, security-focused AI strategy that views fraud prevention as a key competitive advantage.

Importantly, AI is blurring the distinction between security and service. Growing cyber threats means customers expect their banks to not just protect their money, but also provide clear, accurate answers in times of uncertainty. Our work with clients reveals that AI-powered chatbots and authentication systems can speed up queries from banking staff by sourcing information for them 30-40% faster than before. This has in turn had a knock-on effect for customer satisfaction, with customers now rating their experiences with chatbots 25% higher than their previous conversations with human agents.

What the next era of banking demands

Fraud detection can't be isolated in today's threat landscape. It must be embedded within financial infrastructure. Whether that's through cross-industry accords like Australia's Scam-Safe Accord, or through the blend of service and security seen in AI-powered chatbots that both authenticate users and resolve queries in real time, APAC is demonstrating how integrated systems can turn raw data into actionable defenses, driven by AI and aligned with operational needs.

Asia-Pacific's experience highlights that financial security hinges on being proactive, not reactive. Faced with massive fraud losses and complex scam networks, Asian institutions have swiftly prioritized AI-driven fraud prevention. U.S. and European peers, on the other hand, treat fraud prevention as one possible AI application among many. That will be a mistake as AI-driven financial crime starts to spread globally.

AI's role in fraud will grow. Asia-Pacific's strategy shows the value of acting quickly to counteract it, integrating fraud prevention into financial infrastructure. As global threats escalate, the world should look to Asia, not just as a regional leader, but as a role model for secure, seamless financial transactions.

Key Points -

Meta's new deal with Google Cloud follows other artificial intelligence (AI) investments in Scale AI and the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs.

For Alphabet, this new cloud deal with Meta follows another massive partnership with OpenAI.

Despite Alphabet's undeniable progress in the cloud arena, the stock remains dirt cheap compared to its big tech peers.

10 stocks we like better than Alphabet ›

Over the last few years, hyperscalers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) have poured hundreds of billions of dollars into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

Much of this capital has been geared toward securing graphics processing units (GPUs) and designing custom silicon from Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Broadcom -- the backbones of the AI infrastructure revolution.

But why has big tech been so relentless in its pursuit of AI hardware? On the surface, the answer is simple: build sprawling data centers filled with clusters of high-performance chips to power AI workloads. Yet the deeper motivation is becoming clearer, and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) may have just handed us the biggest clue.

According to reports, Meta struck a six-year $10 billion deal with Alphabet's Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This isn't just about the price tag. It signals how hyperscalers are positioning themselves for the next chapter of cloud computing in the AI era.

Let's dig into Meta's recent infrastructure investments and see how they align with this new cloud deal. For Alphabet, the implications of this deal could be huge -- and investors should be watching closely.

Meta's spending spree continues and...

Meta's partnership with Google Cloud comes as the company is ramping up record capital expenditures.

META Capital Expenditures (TTM) Chart

META Capital Expenditures (TTM) data by YCharts; TTM = trailing 12 months.

Beyond its huge data center buildouts, Meta recently invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, a leading data-labeling start-up. For those who are unfamiliar with what data labelling is, it's the process of tagging raw data (i.e. images, audio) so AI models can understand and learn from it. This is vital for Meta because higher-quality datasets are the foundation to accurately train and scale its AI systems. Meta also unveiled a new research group, dubbed Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Together, these initiatives highlight Meta's ambitions to push past traditional large language models (LLMs) and position itself at the forefront of the next frontier in AI: artificial general intelligence (AGI).

... this time it's Alphabet that benefits

Meta's collaboration with Google Cloud follows a similar partnership between Alphabet's cloud platform and ChatGPT maker OpenAI, signaling a subtle but important shift in the cloud landscape.

Even companies deeply tied to incumbents like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are now diversifying to access Google's tensor processing unit (TPU) chips and its AI-optimized infrastructure, which includes advanced cybersecurity protocols as a major differentiator.

While AWS pioneered the public cloud and Azure figured out how to dominate the enterprise information-technology landscape, Alphabet has carved out a role as an AI-first cloud provider, emphasizing machine learning and data analytics. The fact that both Meta and OpenAI have chosen Google Cloud underscores how strongly Alphabet's strategy resonates with the companies setting the pace for the AI revolution.

At the same time, multicloud strategies are now becoming the industry norm. Businesses no longer want to be locked into a single vendor, especially as AI training and inference workloads grow more complex. By distributing workloads across providers, companies can optimize for cost, performance, and availability, while avoiding computing bottlenecks.

For Meta, this flexibility is crucial. As it scales up next-generation generative AI tools, develops agentic assistants, and enhances its advertising algorithms, tapping Google Cloud ensures both the capacity and unique specialization required to compete in an intense AI landscape.

Is Alphabet stock a buy?

For Alphabet, the Meta deal stresses its strategic importance in the AI cloud ecosystem. Securing a multiyear, multibillion-dollar partnership not only boosts revenue visibility for Google Cloud but also validates years of heavy investment in AI infrastructure.

GOOGL PE Ratio (Forward) Chart

GOOGL PE Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts.

Yet despite this progress, Alphabet stock remains undervalued relative to peers in the cloud space.

Trading at a forward price-to-earnings multiple (P/E) of just 21, the market still appears to underappreciate the accelerating momentum across the company's business.

To me, Alphabet stock is a no-brainer opportunity right now. It looks dirt cheap, and the new Meta deal further reinforces the company's leading position among AI hyperscalers, even if the stock price doesn't reflect that.

Key Points -

Snowflake stock shot up impressively following its latest quarterly report.

The company is getting an AI-powered boost, and its earnings growth outpaced that of Nvidia in the previous quarter.

Snowflake has the ability to clock faster earnings growth than Nvidia going forward, thanks to the adoption of AI in the data cloud space.

10 stocks we like better than Snowflake ›

All eyes were on Nvidia on Aug. 27 in anticipation of the semiconductor giant's latest quarterly report, but it looks like investors were not impressed with the chip designer's results.

Though Nvidia coasted past Wall Street's expectations and delivered a healthy year-over-year increase in both revenue and earnings, concerns about the company's business in China weighed on the stock. As a result, the stock remained almost flat the following day. However, there's another artificial intelligence (AI) company that released its results on the same day, and its stock soared impressively. In fact, this stock has outpaced Nvidia stock significantly in the past year.

Let's take a closer look at that name and why it has the potential to fly even higher.

Booming demand for AI database products has given Snowflake a massive boost

Snowflake (NYSE: SNOW) operates a cloud-based data platform on which customers can securely store data for processing and analysis. Its data cloud platform is available on leading cloud computing platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Moreover, Snowflake also operates a marketplace on which its customers can get access to applications and data shared by other customers.

The company has been offering AI tools to its customers so they can get more out of their data, and this strategy has been paying off nicely in recent quarters. So, it wasn't surprising to see Snowflake exceeding Wall Street's expectations when it released its fiscal 2026 second-quarter results (for the three months ended July 31).

The company's revenue shot up 32% year over year to $1.1 billion last quarter, an acceleration of three percentage points from the year-ago period. The rapidly improving adoption of Snowflake's AI solutions is playing a key role in driving this acceleration. The company's customer base was up by 19% year over year in the previous quarter, and just over half of its customer accounts were using Snowflake AI solutions.

The company's AI platform helps customers build AI agents for analyzing documents, develop and deploy AI models and applications, and access popular large language models (LLMs) that they can apply to their data. Snowflake management made it clear on the latest earnings conference call that AI is indeed the reason why its customer base is swelling. In the words of CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy, "Today, AI is a core reason why customers are choosing Snowflake, influencing nearly 50% of new logos won in Q2. And once they're on our platform, AI becomes a cornerstone of their strategy, powering 25% of all deployed use cases with over 6,100 accounts using Snowflake's AI every week."

Even better, AI is helping Snowflake drive stronger spending from its existing customer base. This is evident from the company's net revenue retention rate of 125% last quarter, a metric that compares the spending by its customers in a period to the spending by the same customer cohort in the previous year. A reading of more than 100% means that its existing customers have expanded their usage of Snowflake's solutions or are buying more of its offerings.

The growth in Snowflake's customer base and the expansion in spending by existing customers led to an impressive year-over-year growth of six percentage points in its non-GAAP (adjusted) operating margin. As a result, Snowflake's adjusted earnings almost doubled from the year-ago period to $0.35 per share. What's more, the company's solid revenue pipeline and huge addressable market indicate that it can continue to deliver more upside.

Snowflake has crushed Nvidia in the past year, and could sustain its momentum

Shares of Snowflake have jumped 108% in the past year, well ahead of the 40% gains clocked by Nvidia during the same period. Looking ahead, Snowflake has room for further growth considering that its remaining performance obligations (RPO) jumped by 33% in the previous quarter to $6.9 billion. Not surprisingly, the company has now raised its fiscal 2026 product revenue forecast to $4.4 billion from the earlier estimate of $4.33 billion.

Snowflake could further raise its forecast as the year progresses since it is sitting on a sizable revenue opportunity, which could jump higher in the future thanks to the proliferation of AI. The company expects its total addressable market (TAM) to more than double in the next five years to $355 billion in 2029, suggesting that the company is on track to enjoy years of terrific growth.

Another thing worth noting is that Snowflake's earnings increased at a faster pace than the 54% year-over-year growth reported by Nvidia last quarter. Analysts are expecting it to keep outpacing Nvidia's earnings growth in the future as well.

SNOW EPS Estimates for Current Fiscal Year Chart

SNOW EPS Estimates for Current Fiscal Year data by YCharts

So, don't be surprised to see Snowflake stock deliver more gains to investors in the long run. And with the stock trading at 19 times sales as compared to Nvidia's price-to-sales ratio of 30, growth investors can still consider buying Snowflake even after the healthy gains it has clocked in the past year.

Should you invest $1,000 in Snowflake right now?

Robert Mueller, who served as a special counsel to determine if the Russian government interfered to help then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease four years ago, the New York Times reported on Aug. 31.

The Times, citing a Mueller family statement, reported that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in the summer of 2021.

"He retired from the practice of law at the end of that year," the statement said, according to the Times. "He taught at his law school alma mater during the fall of both 2021 and 2022, and he retired at the end of 2022. His family asks that his privacy be respected."

Former Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller is pictured testifying during a House Intelligence Committee hearing.

The investigation ultimately concluded that Russia had interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump but that there was no evidence that anyone associated with the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government.

On Aug. 22, the Department of Justice sent a portion of the files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died by suicide in 2019 in a New York federal prison, to the House Oversight Committee in response to a subpoena issued by the committee.

Mueller is one of several former top federal law enforcement officials — including James Comey, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, William Barr, and Jeff Sessions — who have been subpoenaed to testify as part of its inquiry into the federal government's handling of the investigations.

The statement from the family to the New York Times came days before he was slated to testify before the House Oversight Committee about investigations and prosecutions. Mueller was supposed to testify on Sept. 2, according to the Times.

The committee, the Times reported, wanted to ask Mueller about the FBI's handling of the Epstein investigation when he served as its director from 2001 to 2013.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Monday leader Kim Jong Un inspected a new weapons factory that's key to his plan to accelerate mass production of missiles in a weekend visit before he departs for a major military parade in China.

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency did not disclose the location of the factory Kim visited Sunday, but it may be in Jagang province, a hub of the country's munitions industry that borders China.

Both China and North Korea confirmed last week that Kim will make his first visit to China in six years to attend a military parade in Beijing on Wednesday, which marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and China's resistance against Japanese wartime aggression.

The 26 foreign leaders invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping also include Russia's Vladimir Putin, who has received major wartime support from Kim in his invasion of Ukraine, making the Beijing event a show of three-way alignment against U.S. efforts to strengthen security cooperation with South Korea and Japan.

South Korean media speculated Kim could depart for China by train sometime Monday, pointing to heightened security measures at the Chinese border town of Dandong, where rail traffic was reportedly halted and hotels stopped receiving foreign guests.

KCNA said the factory had assembly lines to speed missile production and reported that Kim praised scientists and workers and ratified plans for improvement.

South Korean officials say Kim has pushed to accelerate munitions production as he supplies Russia with large quantities of military equipment, including artillery and ballistic missiles. Kim has also sent thousands of troops since last fall to fight alongside Russian forces against Ukraine, as he prioritizes Moscow as part of a foreign policy aimed at expanding ties with nations confronting the United States.

Since aligning with Russia, North Korea has become more vocal in international affairs beyond the Korean Peninsula, issuing diplomatic statements on conflicts in the Middle East and in the Taiwan Strait, while portraying itself as a part of a united front against Washington. Some experts say Kim's presence at the multilateral event in Beijing is part of efforts to develop partnerships with other nations close to China and Russia.

China remains North Korea's largest trade partner and economic lifeline, and Kim's attendance at the Beijing military parade is also seen as an attempt to showcase ties with a major ally and boost leverage ahead of a possible resumption of negotiations with Washington.

Kim met U.S. President Donald Trump three times during Trump's first term, but their diplomacy never recovered from their collapsed second summit in 2019 in Vietnam, where the U.S. rejected North Korea's demands for major sanctions relief in exchange for partial steps toward denuclearization.

For more than 100 years, Geauga Lake in Aurora, Ohio, was an amusement park destination.

From its earliest days in the late 19th century, when Geauga Lake was just a train stop with picnic tables and boats to rent, the park grew. Its first ride was a steam-powered carousel, added in 1889. Its first roller coaster didn't come until 1925 with the Big Dipper, which entertained thrill-seekers until the park closed down.

And in 2001, Geauga Lake absorbed the neighboring Sea World, when the latter closed its Ohio park. That made Geauga Lake the largest theme park in the world by area at the time, covering some 700 acres on both sides of the lake.

Less than a decade later, the fun was over.

In 2007, the park shut down after rounds of ownership changes and park expansion. Now, what's left of Geauga Lake Park may return to its 19th-century roots. The City of Aurora has purchased the former Geauga Lake and Sea World land, with the intent of making it a public park.

Here's a look back at the history of Geauga Lake, as reported in previous Beacon Journal articles.

Looking back at Geauga Lake Park in Ohio; its first roller coaster, the Big Dipper, debuted in 1925

Here's a brief history of Geauga Lake:

1887: The northeast side of Geauga Lake is first called Picnic Lake or Giles Pond, a place where visitors camped, went fishing or picnicked.

1889: The park's first ride is added, a steam-powered carousel.

1925: Geauga Lake's first roller coaster is built. The Big Dipper was the largest wooden roller coaster built at the time, at 2,800 feet long and a height of 65 feet.

1939: A dance hall and ballroom are built.

1969: Funtime Inc. purchases the park.

1977: The Double Loop — Ohio's first looping steel coaster — opens.

1978: The Corkscrew steel coaster debuts.

1984: The Wave, the first pool of its kind that creates 6-foot waves, opens.

1988: The park celebrates its 100th year and welcomes the Raging Wolf Bobs wooden roller coaster.

1995: Geauga Lake is purchased by Premier Parks Inc.

1998: Premier Parks purchases Six Flags Theme Parks.

2000: Park changes name to Six Flags Ohio.

2001: Six Flags purchases SeaWorld Cleveland, renamed to Six Flags Worlds of Adventure.

2004: Six Flags sells the park to Cedar Fair, at the time the owner of Cedar Point. The name is changed back to Geauga Lake.

2005: Cedar Fair revamps the old Sea World into a water park called Wildwater Kingdom.

2007: The ride side of Geauga Lake closes.

2016: Wildwater Kingdom closes.

Los Angeles Angels left fielder Taylor Ward left in the eighth inning of the team's 3-0 victory against the Houston Astros on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Ward had his head up as he was tracking down a ball hit by Ramón Urías in the outfield before running face-first into the metal scoreboard at Daikin Park.

The outfielder walked toward the Angels' bullpen for assistance as teammates came to his aid with a towel to cover a cut he received after crashing into the screen.

Ward was carted off the field and did not return to the game.

Fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula is making another deep run at the U.S. Open and she claimed her spot in the quarterfinals Sunday with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over fellow American Ann Li in New York.

Pegula converted 6 of 9 break points and needed just 54 minutes to subdue Li, who committed 19 unforced errors while playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium for the first time.

Pegula next will face two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. Krejcikova staved off eight match points while rallying to a 1-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3 victory over upstart Taylor Townsend.

Krejcikova held a 43-37 edge in winners while needing three hours and four minutes to finish off Townsend, who was vying to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event for the first time.

Townsend dominated the first set and had a chance to close the deal in straight sets. She was leading 6-3 in a second-set tiebreaker before letting three straight match points get away.

The two women traded big hits and missed shots throughout the 25-minute tiebreaker before Krejcikova finished off the 98-minute set with a slam. Seven of Townsend's squandered match points came in the second-set tiebreaker.

Krejcikova broke Townsend's service to make it 4-2 and 5-3 in the third set before finishing off a scintillating victory that disappointed the pro-American crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

"I'm totally enjoying this crowd. Even though it's not for me, it's fine," Krejcikova said in her on-court interview. "I love the atmosphere. I love when they're cheering. They're making the match huge. It's for the Americans. It's not for me.

"I wish we had a tournament in Czech Republic and there were a lot of fans rooting for me. Maybe in a different life. Not now. I'm just enjoying. I'm having fun on court. I'm so happy I can be here. It's a huge privilege that I can play in front of such a nice crowd on Armstrong."

Krejcikova's impressive showing snuffed out the dreams of the 29-year-old Townsend, a No. 1 doubles player who is enjoying the top singles run of her career.

Townsend lost in the first round of the other three majors this year before winning her first three matches at the Billie Jean King Center. She swept No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia on Friday, two days after beating No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in straight sets and being on the receiving end of some disparaging comments about her lack of sportsmanship.

Pegula, a 2024 finalist, is more used to being on the big stage in New York.

"I've obviously kind of earned that right over the years," the 31-year-old Pegula said of playing in Ashe. "When I was younger, I never hit on Ashe, I never played on Ashe. I was always on another court, Court 17 or maybe Grandstand if I was lucky. That's definitely changed.

"Specifically here being an American, I have played a lot there now. Maybe against someone that hasn't gotten a lot of reps on that court, I think it is a little bit like a home-court advantage."

This marks the third time Pegula has advanced to at least the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. She lost to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in last season's title match and also reached the quarters in 2022.

Pegula has won just one of three matchups against Krejcikova. Pegula's victory came in the 2023 Australian Open round of 16.

On Sunday, Pegula outclassed the 25-year-old Li and was highly effective at the net by winning 12 of 15 points.

"It's a part of my game I can use as a weapon," Pegula said. "We've definitely worked on that a lot. They're really happy when I can finish a point with an overhead or a volley at the net."

Pegula won the first three games of the match while sailing through the first set. It was more of the same in the second as she won four of the first five games before finishing off the match.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies signed veteran right-hander Walker Buehler on Sunday in a bid to bolster their pitching staff for a long playoff run.

The 31-year-old Buehler, a two-time NL All-Star who helped the Los Angeles Dodgers to World Series titles in 2020 and 2024, was released by Boston Red Sox on Friday after going 7-7 with a 5.45 ERA in 23 games, 22 of which were starts.

The NL East-leading Phillies have an opening in their rotation after ace Zack Wheeler was recently lost for the season — and possibly longer — due to thoracic outlet syndrome. Buehler will be eligible to pitch in the postseason and was assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

"We're excited to have him because we think he makes us better," Phillies president Dave Dombrowski said. "We're trying to do anything we can to qualify for the postseason and then, if we make it, to do anything we can to win."

Dombrowski said Buehler would make a start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday and then start for the Phillies on Sept. 12 against Kansas City, becoming part of a six-man starting rotation.

"He's happy with the plan; we're happy with the plan," Dombrowski said.

Buehler signed a one-year, $21.05 million deal last offseason with the Red Sox and was expected to be a key member of their rotation. But he went on the injured list early in the season with a shoulder injury and never found his top form.

Boston demoted the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder from its rotation following his start Aug. 19. He made one appearance for the Red Sox out of the bullpen, allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Yankees on Aug. 24. He was released to make room for top prospect Payton Tolle.

One of Buehler's better outings this season came against the Phillies in Philadelphia on July 21 when he allowed one earned run on six hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking one. It left an impression on Dombrowski and Philadelphia's brass.

"He still has a good arm," Dombrowski said while acknowledging some struggles this season. "But we still like a lot of his stuff."

Dombrowski said Phillies officials, including manager Rob Thomson, had a good Zoom conversation with Buehler and his representatives that featured a back-and-forth with pitching coach Caleb Cotham in which the two connected.

"We think we see some things that can hopefully help him," Dombrowski said. "He's willing to work with us."

Taylor Fritz is moving on to the US Open quarterfinals.

The No. 4 seed remains as the last American competing in the men's singles tournament.

The 27-year-old earned a decisive victory over No. 21-seed Tomáš Macháč of Czechia, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, in the fourth round on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

As a result of the victory, Fritz has now won 25 of his last 30 matches, the most of any player on the men's tour since the conclusion of the French Open in early June.

Fritz will play the winner of Novak Djokovic or German Jan-Lennard Struff.

Fritz finds himself just two wins away from reaching the US Open finals for a second straight year. He finished as the 2024 runner-up behind Jannik Sinner. Sinner also remains in the tournament and will have an opportunity to qualify for the quarterfinals on Monday.

This will be the sixth consecutive Grand Slam event to feature at least one American male in the quarterfinal round. That is the longest such streak since another run of six straight events from the 2002 US Open to the 2004 Australian Open, according to ESPN.
