(Reuters) -Reddit's shares surged 15% on Friday after it reported quarterly results that exceeded Street expectations, boosting investor confidence in the platform's AI-based advertising tools and strong user engagement.

The company has also posted a rosy forecast that comes on the heels of similarly upbeat results from ad industry leaders such as Meta and Alphabet, underscoring a broader sector shift as advertisers gravitate towards platforms that provide artificial-intelligence tools to create more personalized campaigns.

The company expects third-quarter revenue of between $535 million and $545 million, well above analysts' average estimate of $473 million, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Reddit's focus on understanding user intent through authentic community conversations positions it to unlock new monetization opportunities, said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell.

"Being able to home in on exactly the kind of consumer who might be open to splurge on what a seller is offering has made sites like Reddit hugely popular with advertisers," Hewson said.

Reddit's results, along with those of Google and Meta, signal the ad industry's resilience in the face of growing economic uncertainty brought on by shifting U.S. trade policy.

The company's diverse ad offerings, including ads inserting brands directly within conversations on its subreddit discussions, remain attractive to marketers.

Reddit's daily active unique visitors increased 21%, with analysts saying stabilizing daily active user trends are bolstering investor confidence in the platform's "long-term growth narrative".

Despite variable Google-driven traffic posing a headwind in the second quarter, Reddit's U.S. daily active users held steady, expressing confidence that the company's unique content was valuable to both Google and searchers, analysts at Piper Sandler said.

The company has been investing in new products, search capabilities and international expansion to offset inconsistent user traffic.

Reddit is currently valued at a premium compared to its peers, trading at 74.57 times its projected earnings over the next 12 months, well above Pinterest's 19.39 and Snap's 27.54.

If gains hold, Reddit is set to add more than $4 billion to its market cap.

NEW YORK (AP) — Exxon Mobil's second-quarter profit dropped to the lowest level in four years and sales fell as oil prices slumped as OPEC+ ramped up production.

The Texas oil driller still topped Wall Street profit expectations Friday and shares rose slightly before the opening bell, even with global markets falling on the erratic trade polices of the U.S.

The price for a barrel of U.S. benchmark crude has remained below $70 for most of the year and in May, it was well below $60.

Exxon earned $7.08 billion, or $1.64 per share, for the period ended June 30. A year earlier it earned $9.24 billion, or $2.14 per share.

That was better than Wall Street expected, but Exxon does not adjust its reported results based on one-time events such as asset sales. Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research were calling for earnings of $1.49 per share.

"We achieved our highest second-quarter Upstream production since the merger of Exxon and Mobil more than 25 years ago," Chairman and CEO Darren Woods said, referring to the company's exploration and production operations.

Exxon offset lower prices by ramping up production as well. Second-quarter net production was 4.6 million oil-equivalent barrels per day. That was an increase of 79,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day when compared with the first quarter.

Revenue fell to $81.51 billion from $93.06 billion, missing the $82.82 billion that Wall Street was looking for.

Chevron Corp. reported a second-quarter profit of $2.49 billion, or $1.45 per share. Removing one-time costs, earnings were $1.77 per share.

That was also a four-year low for the second quarter, but it too beat Wall Street profit expectations and missed revenue expectations by industry analysts.

Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research expected Chevron per-share earnings of $1.70.

Quarterly revenue for Chevron, which scored a critical ruling in Paris last month that gave it the go-ahead for a $53 billion acquisition of Hess, was $44.82 billion.

The company said that Permian Basin production increased to 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in the quarter. U.S. net oil-equivalent production was up 123,000 barrels per day from a year earlier.

In July eight members of the OPEC+ alliance of oil exporting countries said that they will boost production by 548,000 barrels per day in August in a decision that could further reduce gas prices this year. They cited a "steady global economic outlook" and low oil inventories.

Oil prices spiked sharply in June during the bloody, 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran but then tumbled back down as the U.S. helped broker a peace deal after dropping bombs on three of Iran's key nuclear sites.

A pair of AFC teams quickly emerged as the strong favorites to vie for wide receiver Terry McLaurin if the Washington Commanders grant his trade request that was reported by multiple outlets Thursday.

The Commanders are the odds-on favorite to retain McLaurin at -250 at DraftKings. But the book is also offering odds on the 31 other NFL franchises, led by the New England Patriots at +450 and the Las Vegas Raiders at +500.

The next-shortest odds belong to the Los Angeles Chargers and Tennessee Titans at +1100 each.

The Patriots signed veteran Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million contract this offseason, but the 31-year-old is coming off an ACL injury that ended his 2024 season. Beyond him is a slew of veterans including DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kendrick Bourne and Kayshon Boutte, but McLaurin would provide a significant upgrade to pair with Diggs.

The Raiders could likewise benefit from a proven playmaker to aid veteran quarterback Geno Smith. Their depth chart is currently topped by Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker and Dont'e Thornton Jr., with second-year tight end Brock Bowers the clear No. 1 threat in the passing game.

The big question remains whether the Commanders would entertain parting with McLaurin as they prepare for a 2025 season in which they are expected to be a significant threat in the NFC.

Washington added veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel over the offseason, but McLaurin remains the No. 1 wideout among a group that also includes Noah Brown and Michael Gallup.

CONTRACT STALEMATE?

Frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations toward a contract extension, McLaurin sat out the first four days of training camp before reporting on Sunday. After reporting, he can no longer be fined $50,000 per day.

McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, became a hold-in and was placed on the team's physically unable to perform list with an apparent ankle injury suffered last season. He did not attend organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. He did, however, participate in spring workouts.

"You'd like to get these things done quicker, but it doesn't always happen that way," general manager Adam Peters said. "Whatever happens along the way, just understand he's a great player and we want to keep him here."

With a base salary of $15.5 million and cap hit of $25.5 million in the final season of a three-year, $68.3 million contract, the speedster is coming off a career year with 1,096 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns and 82 receptions on 117 targets. He added three scores and 227 yards on 14 receptions in three playoff games.

McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels helped lead Washington (12-5) to its best season since it won the Super Bowl in 1991. The Commanders knocked off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC wild-card round and Detroit Lions in the divisional round before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

Over six seasons with Washington, the two-time Pro Bowl selection (2022, 2024) has 6,379 receiving yards, 38 touchdowns and 460 catches in 97 games.

A team captain, McLaurin has hit the 1,000-yard mark for a franchise-record five straight seasons despite instability at the quarterback position before Daniels' NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign.

US envoy visits aid site in Gaza run by Israeli-backed group that has been heavily criticized

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump's Mideast envoy on Friday visited a food distribution site in the Gaza Strip operated by an Israeli-backed American contractor whose efforts to deliver food to the hunger-stricken territory have been marred by violence and controversy.

International experts warned this week that a "worst-case scenario of famine" is playing out in Gaza. Israel's nearly 22-month military offensive against Hamas has shattered security in the territory of some 2 million Palestinians and made it nearly impossible to safely deliver food to starving people.

Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee toured a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution site in Rafah, Gaza's southernmost city, which has been almost completely destroyed and is now a largely depopulated Israeli military zone.

Hundreds of people have been killed by Israeli fire while heading to such aid sites since May, according to witnesses, health officials and the U.N. human rights office. Israel and GHF say they have only fired warning shots and that the toll has been exaggerated.

In a report issued Friday, the New York-based Human Rights Watch said GHF was at the heart of a "flawed, militarized aid distribution system that has turned aid distributions into regular bloodbaths."

Hundreds have been killed seeking food

Witkoff posted on X that he had spent over five hours inside Gaza in order to gain "a clear understanding of the humanitarian situation and help craft a plan to deliver food and medical aid to the people of Gaza."

Chapin Fay, a spokesperson for GHF, said the visit reflected Donald Trump's understanding of the stakes and that "feeding civilians, not Hamas, must be the priority." The group says it has delivered over 100 million meals since it began operations in May.

All four of the group's sites established in May are in zones controlled by the Israeli military and have become flashpoints of desperation, with starving people scrambling for scarce aid.

Over 1,000 people have been killed by Israeli fire since May while seeking aid in the territory, most near the GHF sites but also near United Nations aid convoys, the U.N. human rights office said last month.

The Israeli military says it has only fired warning shots at people who approach its forces, and GHF says its armed contractors have only used pepper spray or fired warning shots to prevent deadly crowding.

Officials at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza said Friday they received the bodies of 13 people who were killed while trying to get aid, including near the site that U.S. officials visited. GHF denied anyone was killed at their sites on Friday and said most recent shootings had occurred near U.N. aid convoys.

Another 12 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes, the hospital said.

The Israeli military said its forces had fired warning shots hundreds of meters (yards) away from the aid site at people it described as suspects and said had ignored orders to distance themselves from its forces. It said it was not aware of any casualties but was still investigating.

Witkoff's visit comes a week after U.S. officials walked away from ceasefire talks in Qatar, blaming Hamas and pledging to seek other ways to rescue Israeli hostages and make Gaza safe. Trump wrote on social media that the fastest way to end the crisis would be for Hamas to surrender and release hostages.

Human Rights Watch slams Israeli-backed aid system

Human Rights Watch said in its report that "it would be near impossible for Palestinians to follow the instructions issued by GHF, stay safe, and receive aid, particularly in the context of ongoing military operations." It cited doctors, aid seekers and at least one GHF security contractor.

Building on previous accounts, it described how thousands of Palestinians gather near the sites at night before they open. As they head to the sites on foot, Israeli forces control their movements by opening fire toward them. Once inside the sites, they race for aid in a frenzied fee-for-all, with weaker and more vulnerable people coming away with nothing, the rights group said.

Responding to the report, Israel's military accused Hamas of sabotaging the aid distribution system, without providing evidence. It said it was working to make the routes under its control safer for those traveling to aid sites. GHF did not immediately respond to questions about the report.

The group has never allowed journalists to visit their sites and Israel's military has barred reporters from independently entering Gaza throughout the war.

At a Friday press conference in Gaza City, representatives of the territory's influential tribes accused Israel of empowering factions that loot aid sites and implored Witkoff to stay in Gaza to witness life firsthand. Israel denies aiding looters but says it backs factions that are opposed to Hamas.

"We want the American envoy to come and live among us in these tents where there is no water, no food and no light," they said. "Our children are hungry in the streets."

German foreign minister visits West Bank to highlight settler violence

Germany's foreign minister visited Taybeh in the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian Christian village that has seen recent attacks by Israeli settlers. Johann Wadephul said Israel's settlements are an obstacle to peace and condemned settler violence. He also called on Hamas to lay down its arms in Gaza and release the remaining hostages.

Germany has thus far declined to join other major Western countries in announcing plans to recognize a Palestinian state.

Palestinians in another nearby town laid to rest 45-year-old Khamis Ayad, who they say suffocated while extinguishing fires set by settlers during an attack the night before. Witnesses said Israeli forces fired live rounds and tear gas toward residents after the settlers attacked.

Israel's military said police were investigating the incident. They said security forces found Hebrew graffiti and a burnt vehicle at the scene but had not detained any suspects.

There has been a rise in settler attacks, as well as Palestinian militant attacks on Israelis and large-scale Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank since Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack out of Gaza triggered the war there.

Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, that day and abducted 251 others. They still hold 50 hostages, including around 20 believed to be alive. Most of the others have been released in ceasefires or other deals.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Its count doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians. The ministry operates under the Hamas government. The U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.

NFL Hall of Fame Game: Trey Lance leads Chargers to win over Lions in strong showing

Kari AndersonAugust 1, 2025 at 10:04 AM

The NFL preseason kicked off a little early, as the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions faced off in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Thursday. The Chargers picked up an easy 34-7 win behind a stellar performance from backup quarterback Trey Lance.

Lance, a former third overall pick who has spent most of his career as a backup, put together a strong performance in Thursday's win where neither team played their starters. The 25-year-old quarterback played the first three quarters of the game, going 13 of 20 for two touchdowns and 120 yards.

The game began with a tribute to the four members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2025: tight end Antonio Gates, defensive end Jared Allen, cornerback Eric Allen, and receiver Sterling Sharpe. Gates, as a player who spent his entire career with the Chargers, received the biggest cheer from the crowd.

After that, the stadium held a moment of silence for this week's attack on the NFL's headquarters in New York. Four people, including an off-duty police officer, were killed in the shooting.

Then, it went to the game, where Los Angeles got off to a scorching start. The Lions fumbled away the opening kickoff, giving Los Angeles a huge early chance. Though Detroit's defense forced a fourth down, Lance connected with Will Dissly to give the team a 7-0 lead.

Chargers cornerback Nikko Reed, an undrafted rookie out of Oregon, also showed his talents early on with an interception of Detroit reserve quarterback Kyle Allen in the first quarter. Reed ran the ball back for 60 yards, getting L.A. to the 6-yard line to set up a Kimani Vidal touchdown run. That gave the Chargers a 14-0 lead.

Allen was picked off again, by Tony Jefferson, before the end of the first quarter. The eighth-year backup ended 9 of 14 for 91 yards in the loss.

— Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) August 1, 2025

Detroit finally broke through in the second quarter, with a drive that ended with running back Craig Reynolds barreling his way into the end zone. But Lance was able to throw another touchdown, this time to rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith, before the end of the half.

After halftime, L.A. kept things going on offense, with head coach Jim Harbaugh opting to keep the red-hot Lance in for a bit longer. Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker, who missed his first field goal attempt, made his second and third to give L.A a 27-7 lead in the third quarter.

Lions rookie Hendon Hooker replaced Allen at QB in the second half of the game, going 3 of 6 for 18 yards. Rookie DJ Uiagalelei eventually stepped in for Lance in the fourth quarter, and completed 2 of 3 attempts for 25 yards.

With the fourth quarter underway, Vidal ran in for another touchdown to bring the Chargers' score to 34-7.

— Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) August 1, 2025

Then, Los Angeles rookie cornerback Myles Purchase had a great interception, picking off Hooker to force the Lions' fifth turnover and finish off the game.

As preseason provides a chance for teams to test out different players and schemes, the NFL was also trying new things, introducing the league's new virtual measurement system on a (relatively obvious) first down in the second quarter.

But it was a great showing for Lance, who was able to show flashes of the brilliance that led to him being a top-three pick in the first place. Lance took a good first step in earning the Chargers' backup job behind Justin Herbert.

CHICAGO (AP) — A fierce rivalry between Chicago's North and South Siders comes to life each summer during the " Crosstown Classic," when the Cubs and White Sox face off in their home stadiums.

This unique series is loaded with team history and memories for both sets of fans, who hail from the North and South Sides respectively.

Polaroids convey nostalgia, and nothing says nostalgia quite like baseball. The film format requires a level of intimacy not often seen in modern photo coverage of baseball games, when speed and instant images are prioritized.

Many people were excited by the camera's familiar boxy case, the distinctive sound of the photos sliding smoothly out.

"Is that a Polaroid?" they ask. "I haven't seen one of those in forever."

Shooting with a Polaroid requires patience, planning for the right moment. You need the right light and direct interaction with the subject. The result takes several minutes to appear, often with a soft or slightly faded focus.

The experience reflects baseball in many ways. Major League Baseball was officially established 149 years ago, but the methodical work it takes to win, team traditions and a personal connection to the game are what keeps many fans engaged season after season.

Outside the White Sox home stadium, Rate Field, fans are allowed to grill, drink, play games and socialize in a sea of parking lots surrounding the park. Over the rivalry weekend, White Sox and Cubs fans mingled under the sometimes brutal July sun.

Flory Aquino, wearing Sox gear, and Kristina Willer, in Cubs gear, played beer pong together before a game. They said they are "friends before anything."

"We just have a good time, that's it, you know?" said Aquino. "And actually, it doesn't matter what team it is. They're both from Chicago, and we just come out here to have a great time."

Inside the park, too, Polaroids made a memory tangible — a single image that can be seen and held instantly. There's no negative, no possible way to replace it.

Aylin Servin, 8, and her father Aldo took pictures together behind a giant "Chicago" sign inside the ballpark, the city skyline in the background.

The elder Servin said while he is a long-time Cubs fan, his daughter picked the White Sox. She was attending her first baseball game ever.

The images also capture the White Sox fan base's recent embrace of their most famous member — Pope Leo XIV. Born Robert Prevost on Chicago's South Side, the new pope attended Game 1 of the 2005 World Series sweep of the Houston Astros.

A fresh mural memorializes that moment. And there are T-shirts and other merchandise nodding to the famous fan sold everywhere.

Tom Dermody has been a security guard at the park for the last 14 years and remembers many a Crosstown Classic. He's got a positive view of his job and the fans he interacts with. But he admits the stickier moments are hard to forget.

"Almost three years ago today, I broke up a fight out in the left field bleachers on a Sunday and wound up tearing, completely tearing my rotator cuff," he said. "I found out later on, it was an irate Sox fan that threw a beer on a Cubs fan and the whole section went up for grabs.

"It looked like a food fight from one of John Belushi's movies," he reminisced.

After a slow start, Team USA is surging back to prominence at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. Kate Douglass was the latest member of the team to turn in a medal-winning performance, taking gold in the 200m breaststroke.

Douglass was excellent in the event, defeating second-place finisher Evgeniia Chikunova by more than a second. Douglass finished with a winning time of 2:18.50. That set a new championships record and a new American record, though did not set a new world record.

She came, she swam, she rewrote the record books! 💥Kate Douglass wins the 200m Breaststroke with a Championships Record to top it off! 📚🏊‍♀️#Swimming#AQUASingapore25pic.twitter.com/eqRSnXIExJ

— World Aquatics (@WorldAquatics) August 1, 2025

For now, Douglass will have to settle for beating the world-record holder. Chikunova holds that title after turning in a 2:17.55 performance back in 2023.

The win is more of the same for Douglass, who took home the gold medal in the 200m breaststroke at the 2024 Olympics. Though the breaststroke is one of her strongest events, Douglass had never won a gold at the World Championships in the 200m. She finished as the runner-up in both 2024 and 2023 in the event.

Douglass' medal gives Team USA five golds in swimming at the World Championships. That moves them into a tie with Australia, which also has five gold medals. Team USA does have the most medals of any team so far, with 20.

It's quite the comeback for Team USA, which battled acute gastroenteritis throughout the event. Multiple swimmers on the team pulled out of races due to the illness, or turned in disappointing performances.

Catherine Blair Bowman, the wife of former Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden, wrote that she was "terrified" of him in new court filings and alleged that he physically assaulted her after she confronted him about "sexting with teenage girls."

Bowman is seeking a restraining order against Madden, 46, in new documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday, July 30. The documents note that the musician is currently in a rehabilitation facility. A judge granted a temporary restraining order, effective until a court date scheduled for Aug. 20.

The restraining order also covers their two huskies, Toast and Jam. Bowman and Madden do not have children. The documents obtained by PEOPLE indicate the date of the alleged physical assault was July 21.

Bowman claimed that on July 21, she received a message from a teenage girl alerting her to Madden's alleged sexts with her. "I was extremely hurt and disturbed. I needed to understand what was going on between them," Bowman's statement read.

Bowman then described the alleged incident of assault in detail. "When he denied it, I asked him to hand me his phone," she wrote. "He would not hand me his phone, but I could see that he was quickly deleting the evidence from his phone."

After grabbing the phone and running out of the house, Bowman alleged that Madden "became enraged."

"He put both his arms around my body around my abdomen and arms to restrain me. He then slammed my body against the marble kitchen counter. I felt pain in my hip and waist area. He shoved me to the ground and was out of his mind. I landed on my knees. He kept screaming for me to give him the phone. He appeared literally insane to me. I had never seen such uncontrollable anger and a completely different person," Bowman's filing alleged.

The documents also allege that another incident of abuse took place on May 14. "He physically abused me. Extreme emotional harm. I'm now terrified of him," Bowman wrote.

https://people-app.onelink.me/HNIa/kz7l4cuf

In screenshotted text messages submitted in the request for a restraining order, Madden allegedly referred to the sexting as "A private and fake harmless fantasy" that had "No bearing on real life at all."

In the alleged text messages, Bowman wrote, "Mickey. I do not know the man who hires 18 year old prostitutes to text them about wanting to be their stepdad and rape them while we are on our honeymoon." Bowman then appeared to allude via text that she similarly experienced an abusive relationship with an older man as a teenager.

Madden allegedly responded, "I am beyond sorry for my actions and for engaging in any form of expression of those impulses..it's all completely unacceptable. but I have to draw the line at that characterization of what I did ..This was entirely relegated to text..It's not excusable by any means but I have to make it clear that I would never act on any of that consensual fantasy talk."

In the documents obtained by PEOPLE, Bowman also alleged that Madden "withheld" sex from her after she expressed a desire to conceive a child together, and instead began sleeping with a "prostitute."

Madden left Maroon 5 in 2020, two weeks after an alleged incident of domestic violence. In June 2020, he was arrested on a felony charge in Los Angeles, according to jail records. He was released on the same day after posting his $50,000 bond.

In 2016, Madden was arrested for cocaine possession in New York City. He took a deal with prosecutors, agreeing to one day of community service.

A representative or direct contact for Madden could not be located at the time of publication.

What Trump's Income Tax Plan Means for the Economy and Your Wallet

 • What Trump's Income Tax Plan Means for the Economy and Your Wallet

When President Trump shared that he was considering instituting a policy of tariffs that would lead to the elimination of the federal income tax during his last presidential campaign, it may have seemed economically far-fetched to many financial experts. However, from behind the desk in the Oval Office, it seems he's looking to keep some of the promises he made.

Learn More: Here's How Much Every Tax Bracket Would Gain — or Lose — Under Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill'

Find Out: How Middle-Class Earners Are Quietly Becoming Millionaires — and How You Can, Too

From tariffs to the Big Beautiful Bill, many economic factors are coming home to roost. While the idea of eliminating income taxes sounds appealing to a lot of people, here's what replacing those taxes with tariffs could mean for the economy and your wallet.

Trending Now: Suze Orman's Secret to a Wealthy Retirement--Have You Made This Money Move?

What Are Tariffs and How Do They Work?

A tariff is a tax that is levied on imported goods. It is typically used to increase the cost of foreign-made products, particularly those that come from countries that have significantly lower labor and materials costs, or those that allow unfair trade practices.

The effect of a tariff is to level the playing field for domestic companies who keep jobs local and are subject to the labor laws of the United States. Tariffs are paid to the U.S. government before foreign goods can be brought into the country. The additional cost incurred by the foreign manufacturer would then be passed on to the consumer in the form of a higher retail price.

Read Next: Trump Wants To Replace Income Taxes With Tariffs: 2 Impacts on the Middle Class

Trump's Tariffs So Far

The Trump administration has been working on implementing a series of tariffs on imported goods. Here are a few key takeaways on the situation as it currently stands:

The Trump administration introduced a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports from around the world, which resulted in Canada and the EU introducing new tariffs of their own in return on U.S. goods. Some fear this could spark a global trade war costing billions of dollars.

Though there are some exemptions, Trump has also imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.

Tariffs targeting goods from Canada, China and Mexico linked to fentanyl production remain in effect, despite a court challenge. President Trump has threatened to impose International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China related to fentanyl; national security tariffs on autos, auto parts, steel and aluminum from all countries; and IEEPA tariffs on all countries related to an economic national emergency at a baseline rate of 10% with scheduled increases for more than 50 trading partners later in 2025.

The current baseline reciprocal tariff rate is 10%, but Trump has recently announced plans to raise it to 15 to 20%, yet this threat has yet to come to fruition.

Tariffs on Chinese goods were raised from 104% to 145% in April 2025, marking the highest rate so far this year.

Trump has implemented reciprocal tariffs aimed at equalizing trade relationships that will be in effect as of August 1, 2025.

Though not enacted, Trump has also threatened a 200% tariff on alcohol from EU countries unless those countries remove the 50% tariff on American whiskey.

The Impact of an All-Tariff Plan

If all imported products coming into the United States had increased tariffs, there would be short-term and long-term impacts. The short-term impact would be that prices would rise on all imported goods. Consumers could opt to either pay the higher price for the imported product or choose a domestic product, which would also typically have a higher price than the pre-tariff imported product.

No matter which choice the consumer makes, the price they would pay would be higher than the previous price of the imported product. So, overall prices will rise.

The longer-term effect would be a reduction in the quantity of foreign goods imported into the United States. The law of supply and demand tells us that when prices go up, demand goes down and this, after all, is the goal of the tariff — to reduce imports. There will be fewer imported goods available in the United States, which could also drive up prices overall.

The Impact of Substituting Tariffs for Income Taxes

The concept of replacing income taxes with the revenue from tariffs also has short- and long-term impacts. In the short term, the 'all-tariff' plan would act as a consumption tax — a sales tax on steroids, if you will. Because the cost of a tariff is passed on to the consumer, and consumer prices will go up, consumers are paying more for everything they buy.

This type of consumption tax affects lower-income consumers on a disproportionate basis. People who spend a higher percentage of their income on necessities — housing, utilities, food, clothing, etc. — would pay a higher amount in tariffs, relatively speaking. Those who spend less on necessities, or who earn income from investments, would pay less.

On a longer-term basis, the intended effect of a tariff is to reduce the amount of imported goods. So, the all-tariff plan might eliminate the need for income taxes in the short term, but if it works as intended, it should bring in less money over time. The current income tax system in the U.S. is designed to bring in more money over time, as incomes rise.

Keeping Up With the Joneses Under an All-Tariff System

Tax-weary consumers might think that replacing income tax with tariffs would be a good thing for them. The truth is, it will benefit the wealthy far more than the lower and middle classes.

Here's an example. Two families, the Smiths and the Joneses, each have the same monthly necessary expenses, except for their mortgages, of $6250, which adds up to $75,000 a year. (We'll exclude their housing costs from this exercise, since housing wouldn't be affected by a tariff.) The Smiths have an annual income of $150,000, which barely covers their expenses. The Joneses, on the other hand, have an annual income of $300,000, which allows them to easily cover expenses and put some money into savings. So, the Smiths are paying a higher percentage of their income on necessities.

Under a tariff-only plan, each family would pay the same amount — they have equal monthly expenses excluding housing, so the increase they would see from tariffs would be the same. Yet the Joneses have double the annual income of the Smiths.

Under the current progressive income tax system in the United States, a family earning $300,000 per year would pay more than a family making $150,000 a year. Replacing the income tax system with a tariffs-only system turns this on its head and shifts the burden from higher-earning households to those that earn less.

As appealing as eliminating federal income taxes might sound to middle- and lower-income taxpayers, an all-tariff system would benefit the wealthy to a far greater degree.

Is Costco or Sam's Club worth it for empty nesters? We did the math

Why you can trust us

We may earn money from links on this page, but commission does not influence what we write or the products we recommend. AOL upholds a rigorous editorial process to ensure what we publish is fair, accurate and trustworthy.

Is Costco or Sam's Club worth it for empty nesters? We did the math

Cassidy HortonAugust 1, 2025 at 4:37 AM

Think you're household's too small for Costco or Sam's Club? We did the math (andykatz via Getty Images)

If it's just you (or you and a partner), buying a 72-pack of frozen waffles or a gallon tub of mayo might feel … excessive. Or like a one-way ticket to throwing out moldy leftovers and reorganizing your garage every three weeks.

So is a Costco or Sam's Club membership really worth it for a one- or two-person household?

The short answer: It can be — but only if you know what to buy, what to skip and how to actually use what you bring home.

✏️ Real talk from the writer

I'm a single person who shops at Costco, and I have friends in two-person households who do the same. But we don't buy everything in bulk. The trick is knowing which purchases actually save you money — and which ones just feel like a deal until you do the math.

When to skip Costco or Sam's Club for small households

Let's start with the obvious: Costco and Sam's Club are designed for volume. And if you're not careful, that can turn into you wasting food, money or both.

Shopping at Costco or Sam's Club might not be worth it for one or two people if:

You don't eat things fast enough. That four-pound tub of hummus has an expiration date for a reason.

You live in a small space and can't store extra goods. What good is a year's supply of toilet paper if it has to live on the dining room table?

You shop impulsively. "$20 for 40 granola bars" sounds great … until you discover you hate that flavor.

You don't go often enough to justify the membership fee. If you're hitting up Sam's only a few times a year, that's a $25 fee before you even load up your cart.

4 times a warehouse club membership makes sense

Despite the warehouse-size packaging, shopping in bulk can make sense for empty nesters and small families — you just have to be a little strategic. Here's when a membership is totally worth it.

You go through staples like nobody's business.

Toilet paper. Trash bags. Paper towels. Laundry detergent. These things don't expire quickly, and they're always annoying to run out of.

Buying in bulk can mean a better per-unit price — especially on pantry items like olive oil, maple syrup and detergent — but not always. Our comparison found some bulk items were actually more expensive than their regular-size counterparts.

You've got snack loyalty.

If you know you love those granola bars or that brand of trail mix, buying the giant box can make financial sense (or at least save you time and trips to the store) if you know you'll finish it.

You need household upgrades.

I've personally scored my Dyson vacuum, TV, pillows, and bedsheets at Costco for way less than I would've paid at other big box stores. My friend got her snow tires and Bose headphones there. If you keep an eye out, the savings on big-ticket items alone can pay for your membership.

In fact, when we compared prices, warehouse clubs really stood out on electronics and home appliances — especially on name brands like Dyson and Bissell. If you're in the market for something like a vacuum, TV or portable carpet cleaner, you could save $50 to $200 or more just by buying it at Costco instead of Target or Amazon.

You use the other perks.

Costco gas is usually cheaper. Costco Travel has legit vacation deals. You can get prescription discounts, cheap optical appointments and discounted gift cards. These extras add up — and make the membership feel a lot more worth it.

🔍 Learn more: 20+ clever ways to save money: Earning, spending and boosting your bottom line

The "bulk savings" myth: When Costco costs more

A lot of people assume buying in bulk automatically saves you money — but that's not always the case.

Comparing unit prices for common items at Costco and Target, we found that some items are cheaper in bulk (especially olive oil, maple syrup and store-brand basics like detergent). But in a few surprising cases — like peanut butter and granola bars — your neighborhood grocery store might actually come out ahead.

So while the warehouse model does offer real savings on some items, it's not a guaranteed deal across the board. Your best bet is to price check the things you buy most often, and only stock up when the math (and your lifestyle) supports it.

Maximizing your membership (without going broke)

If you're going to pay for a Costco or Sam's Club membership, you want to make it count. These tips can help you avoid our rookie mistakes — and actually save money.

Know what you're there for.

Make a list and stick to it. It's way too easy to walk in for laundry detergent and walk out with a kayak, a box of 100 protein bars and a five-pound wheel of brie (which, though delicious, will outlast most relationships).

Split the cost (and the goods).

Speaking of relationships, most warehouse clubs allow you to split a membership with a friend or family member. (Costco lets you add a household member, for example.) You can also shop together and divide up bulk items you'll never finish on your own. That way, you get the bulk savings without the bulk commitment to a freezer full of bagels.

Watch for deals on big-ticket items.

TVs, laptops, furniture, vacuums — these rotate through seasonal sales. If you're already in the market, it's worth checking prices at Costco or Sam's first. One big purchase could justify the annual fee.

Don't sleep on the services.

Gas, pharmacy, optical, tires, even travel — these behind-the-scenes benefits can quietly add up to hundreds in annual savings, especially if you're spending that money anyway.

🔍 Learn more: 100 best discounts for ages 50+: Groceries, dining, retail, travel and more

Bottom line: Is Costco or Sam's Club worth it for empty nesters?

Honestly? It depends on how you shop and what you buy.

If you value fewer trips to the store or love a good deal on electronics, home upgrades or vacation packages, a Costco or Sam's Club membership can absolutely pay off — whether you're flying solo or a duo. Especially if you're smart about it and skip the temptation to overbuy things you won't use.

But if you're only going for the occasional $5 rotisserie chicken or $1.50 hot dog deal, it might not be worth the annual fee.

As a single Costco shopper, I've learned when you focus on the right things — the stuff you use consistently, the big-ticket deals, the services you'd pay for anyway — the math checks out.

Even if you don't need 40 rolls of toilet paper, it's kind of nice knowing you won't run out anytime soon.
