The Tampa Bay Rays got hit by rain and bit by the injury bug during Thursday's series finale in New York.

Three Rays players — first baseman Jonathan Aranda, designated hitter Yandy Díaz and left fielder Chandler Simpson — left the ultimately rain-delayed game with injuries.

Aranda's looked the most serious.

— Codify (@CodifyBaseball) July 31, 2025

It occurred in the top of the fifth inning, half an inning before the delay in the Bronx. With rain dressing the infield, Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton hit a soft ground ball to third base, where Junior Caminero scurried to make a play on the slow roller.

Caminero, who came into the day with 10 errors at third base this season, rushed the throw to first. It was off the mark, and Aranda extended to reel it in for the putout. As the first-time All-Star reached to catch the ball, he made contact with a sprinting Stanton.

Aranda's glove, and left wrist, collided with the 6-foot-6, 245-pound Stanton. Aranda dropped the ball and then his mitt before clutching his wrist, hopping in pain and then crouching and falling to the ground. He was attended to by an athletic trainer and Rays manager Kevin Cash.

The 27-year-old entered the afternoon slashing .315/.393/.478 with 12 home runs and 53 RBI. He added an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, helping Tampa Bay chip away at a then-7-0 Yankees lead.

Following his injury, Aranda eventually left the field and was replaced by Brandon Lowe, who began the game at second base. José Caballero took Lowe's spot at second.

Díaz sustained a right forearm contusion in the top of the fourth inning, when he was struck by a pitch from Yankees righty Marcus Stroman.

Simpson left the game in the bottom of the third with a left hand injury. He had grounded out in the top half of the frame but didn't remove himself from the contest until he was in left field on the other side of the inning.

Former Stanford football coach Troy Taylor files defamation lawsuit against ESPN

-

 • Former Stanford football coach Troy Taylor files defamation lawsuit against ESPN

Ehsan Kassim, USA TODAY July 31, 2025 at 10:21 PM

Former Stanford football coach Troy Taylor has filed a lawsuit against ESPN and one of its reporters over a story that led to his dismissal.

Taylor, 57, filed the lawsuit on Wednesday in the Northern District of California, citing an investigative story that ran in March by author Xuan Thai. The lawsuit alleges that Thai published "repeated defamatory statements about Taylor, knowing full well that the statements were false, for the purpose of smearing Taylor's reputation and injuring him in his profession."

The Sacramento Bee first reported the filing of the lawsuit, and USA TODAY Sports has obtained a copy of the complaint.

REQUIRED READING: Arch Manning rumor madness with Nick Saban and Cleveland Browns -- and a whole lot of dumb

Stanford and GM Andrew Luck announced the firing of Taylor on March 25, six days after ESPN's report was released. Taylor had been the head coach for the Cardinal for two seasons, leading the program to a 6-18 record.

Thai's story alleged that Taylor "bullied and belittled female athletic staffers," citing a pair of previously undisclosed third-party investigations in 2023 and 2024 after "multiple employees filed official complaints regarding Taylor's behavior."

A month later, on April 16, a follow-up article from ESPN's look into Stanford and Taylor began "in response to a single complainant who alleged gender bias and 'a culture problem in football.'" The article states that despite interviews "with at least 20 Stanford athletic department staffers regarding four allegations against Taylor. Three of the allegations regarding belittling and inappropriate behavior toward multiple women were deemed to have merit."

Taylor's lawsuit states: "Defendents' false reporting about Taylor was not caused by negligence and did not result from any honest or good faith mistakes. Rather, Defendents' intentionally twisted the facts to advance a particular narrative and made (repeated) patently false statements about Taylor for the purpose of harming his reputation and pressuring Stanford to fire him."

Luck, the former Stanford quarterback star and No. 1 overall NFL pick, became Stanford's GM in November. He reportedly knew Taylor's situation before taking the position, but did not decide to fire Taylor until ESPN's report was released ahead of spring practices.

Stanford hired Taylor on Dec. 10, 2022, following a three-year stint coaching Sacramento State at the FCS level. He led the Hornets to three playoff appearances in three seasons. Following the departure of long-time coach David Shaw following a pair of 3-9 seasons, Taylor was brought in.

In his two seasons leading the Cardinal, Taylor also went 3-9, marking the fourth straight season with the same record for the program. Stanford's last winning record in a full season came back in 2018, when it went 9-4 and won the Sun Bowl.

Following the firing of Taylor, Luck tabbed his former Indianapolis Colts coach, Frank Reich, as the new interim head coach. Reich was hired under the condition that he would not be considered for the permanent role.

MLB trade deadline: Orioles reportedly trade slugger Ryan O'Hearn, Ramón Laureano to Padres

-

 • MLB trade deadline: Orioles reportedly trade slugger Ryan O'Hearn, Ramón Laureano to Padres

Chris CwikJuly 31, 2025 at 10:27 PM

One of the more coveted power bats on the free-agent market has found a new home. Baltimore Orioles slugger Ryan O'Hearn was dealt to the San Diego Padres on Thursday, along with outfielder Ramón Laureano, per multiple reports.

In return, Baltimore reportedly receives a slew of Padres prospects — six in total, per MLB Network's Jon Morosi. Pitchers Boston Bateman, Tyson Neighbors and Tanner Smith, infielders Cobb Hightower and Brandon Butterworth, and infielder/outfielder Victor Figueroa will all join the Orioles as part of the deal.

It's the latest move in what has been a very busy trade deadline for Padres general manager and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller. Prior to picking up O'Hearn and Laureano, Preller acquired catcher Freddy Fermin, closer Mason Miller and starter J.P. Sears earlier on Thursday.

BREAKING: The San Diego Padres are acquiring All-Star slugger Ryan O'Hearn and OF Ramón Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles, per @ByRobertMurray and @JeffPassan. pic.twitter.com/1247MIpXCt

— Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) July 31, 2025

O'Hearn, 31, is enjoying arguably the best season of his career. The slugging first baseman and designated hitter is slashing .284/.375/.452 with 12 home runs. That performance earned O'Hearn his first All-Star nod in July. He started the contest for the American League, going 0 for 2 in the National League's win.

It has been quite a road for O'Hearn to reach this point. After an excellent rookie season with the Kansas City Royals in 2018, in which he slashed .262/.353/.597 in 44 games, O'Hearn saw his numbers crater. He hit just .211/.282/.351 over his next four seasons, and it looked like his major-league career was in jeopardy.

But a 2023 trade to the Orioles resurrected his bat. Utilized as a platoon player, O'Hearn hit .275/.329/.450 in his first two years in Baltimore, and his slugging numbers might've been better over that period if not for the Orioles' raised outfield wall in 2024. The team reverted that change for the 2025 season, and then O'Hearn's home slugging numbers took a big step forward.

As for Laureano, this marks the third straight year the right fielder has been traded midseason. After time with the Cleveland Guardians and Atlanta Braves last year, Laureano signed a one-year deal with Baltimore in the offseason.

The outfielder has a .290 batting average and .884 OPS in 259 plate appearances this year, putting him on pace for a career season.

O'Hearn was far from the biggest name on this year's trade market. Eugenio Suarez, Josh Naylor and even Luis Robert Jr. have overshadowed O'Hearn's production in recent seasons. But of that group, only Suarez has a higher wRC+ in 2025. Because of that, O'Hearn could prove to be an underrated trade-deadline acquisition.

If O'Hearn's production can carry over to the Padres, he stands to benefit quite a bit. He'll be a free agent at the end of this season and could earn himself a significant payday if he can continue to excel in the NL West.

What to make of the Padres' latest blockbuster?

AJ Preller has never seen a big trade he didn't like, and that continued Thursday. After acquiring closer Mason Miller and starter J.P. Sears at the beginning of the day, Preller took care of his team's other needs, adding both outfielder Ramon Laureano and first baseman/designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn from the Baltimore Orioles.

O'Hearn was one of the best hitters in the American League this season, and while he doesn't have the power of some other DHs, his strength is his ability to get on base at a high clip. He gives San Diego a player who can be extremely productive at the DH spot.

And Laureano is the perfect fit in left field for the Padres. San Diego has been looking for anyone to take its left-field job, and finally they have a player who not only can field the position well but also has grown into a strong player offensively. The new Padres outfielder is a reverse-splits guy, ranking 13th in MLB with a .930 OPS against right-handed pitching. — Dorsey

Joel Dahmen tied the lowest round of his career with a 9-under-par 61 to set the early pace at the Wyndham Championship on Thursday in Greensboro, N.C.

Dahmen needs a strong showing at the regular-season finale in order to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs that begin next week. A win would vault him from No. 101 in the standings all the way to 48th, according to the PGA Tour. The top 70 in points after this weekend will reach the playoffs.

Dahmen holds just a one-stroke advantage over Sweden's Alex Noren, who turned in an 8-under 62 at Sedgefield Country Club. Four players were tied for third at 63: Cameron Young, Mark Hubbard, Colombia's Nico Echavarria and defending champ Aaron Rai of England.

Not far behind, as part of a large tie at 5-under 65, were Jordan Spieth and Australian Adam Scott. Spieth (No. 50 entering the week) is comfortably in the playoff field, but Scott needs a very high finish in order to jump from 85th into the top 70.

Dahmen ranked fourth in the field Thursday by making 131 1/2 feet of putts. Six of his 10 birdies came on a sterling front nine, his second nine, where he shot 6-under 29. He made birdie at Nos. 7-9, including a 46-footer at the par-3 seventh.

Max Homa shot a 4-under 66 as he clings onto hope of vaulting from No. 106 in the standings into the top 70.

Mandy Moore is sharing some adorable snaps from her family's beach vacation in Mexico

The 'This Is Us' alum could be seen posing with all three of her kids in a sweet family photo

Moore shares sons Ozzy, 2, and Gus, 4, as well as daughter Lou, 10 months, with husband Taylor Goldsmith

Mandy Moore's family enjoyed some time by the water on their recent trip to Mexico.

The Tangled actress, 41, shared an adorable photo of her family of five on Instagram on Thursday, July 31, as she recounted her time spent at the beach on vacation. In the sweet photo, Moore could be seen sitting in the surf alongside her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, while her son Oscar "Ozzy," 2, hung on around her neck.

Sitting beside the star, her 4-year-old son August "Gus" was pictured squishing his hands into the sand and looking down. Goldsmith propped up the couple's newest addition, 10-month-old daughter Louise "Lou," as she sat in his lap.

Other snaps showed the family enjoying the beach and watching sunsets. "Nothing beats a beach vacation with some of your besties (here's looking you at you @whatsgabycookin)," Moore wrote in her caption. "What an epic few days, @fspuntamita! We can't wait to come back (Gus hasn't stopped talking about it)!!"

Moore recently appeared on Kylie Kelce's podcast Not Gonna Lie and was asked by the podcaster if she got a lot of opinions about having her baby daughter Lou when she was 40.

"Yes and no. I mean, I feel like having my third child at 40, this term 'geriatric pregnancy' that's thrown around. I think at least in my experience, so many of my friends are having kids later in life, whether it's by choice or it's by circumstance or biology," Moore began.

https://people-app.onelink.me/HNIa/kz7l4cuf

"I think the thing that I had the most trouble with is just like this system in general kind of treating us as this anomaly that we're like too old and we're too complicated or high risk, and really, it's like, 'Nope, we're just human beings.'"

"And I feel like it's just such an outdated label," she continued. "So it's less about how I think the people and the perceptions they may have had, like the people in my life, it was just more about the healthcare system in general. It feels like such an outdated one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to just women in general."

Earlier this year in May, Moore celebrated her first Mother's Day as a mom of three by sharing an Instagram post dedicated to her mom, Stacy Moore, who also has three children. The carousel contained four throwback images of Mandy with her mom, one of which also included her grandma, Eileen.

"Happy Mother's Day to all the moms and mother figures in our lives, including my own mama who juggled 3 kids effortlessly (HOW!??)," she captioned the post, before reflecting on her personal experience with motherhood.

"Being a mom is the single greatest gift of my life and while you're never off the clock worrying or stressing or planning, the quiet, unmistakable joy triumphs over everything else," the actress continued. "I'm endlessly grateful to the moms in my life who model what it takes, lend an ear, make the best suggestions, and generally make me feel less alone on the journey."

Student loan interest for millions resumes on Aug. 1. Here's what to know.

-

 • Student loan interest for millions resumes on Aug. 1. Here's what to know.

Aimee Picchi July 31, 2025 at 8:47 PM

Paul Morigi

Millions of people with student loans who had signed up for a Biden-era repayment plan will start seeing interest accrue to their accounts starting on Aug. 1, a change that could result in an additional $300 in monthly costs for the typical borrower, according to one analysis.

The Department of Education announced on July 9 that it planned to restart charging interest for borrowers enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education, or SAVE, plan, which was created by the Biden administration in 2023 to help lighten the financial burden faced by millions of student loan borrowers.

But two courts last year issued injunctions against the SAVE plan, effectively halting the repayment program. In response, the Biden administration moved all of the SAVE plan's enrollees into zero-interest forbearance, meaning that their loans were temporarily placed on hold and interest stopped accruing.

The Education Department says resuming interest on the loans represents a measure of "fiscal responsibility," according to its July 9 statement. But the monetary impact on the roughly 8 million borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan could be significant, given that a typical borrower could see an increase of $300 per month due to new interest charges, according to a calculation by the Student Borrower Protection Center, an advocacy group for people with higher-education debt.

SAVE enrollees can opt to remain in forbearance, which means they won't need to make monthly payments, but "the most significant impact is that your total loan balance will start growing again" because interest will resume, Bethany Hubert, a financial aid specialist at lender Earnest, told CBS MoneyWatch.

She added, "If you choose not to make payments, the accruing interest can really balloon your balance, making it much more challenging and expensive to pay back over time."

How much will my payment increase?

While the typical borrower could see costs increase by about $300 per month, or $3,500 per year, the specific increase will depend on your loan balance.

Borrowers can check how the resumption of interest on their loans will impact their payments by going to the loan simulator on the Federal Student Aid website, Hubert said, although she noted that it might not yet include all the recent changes impacting student loans.

Should I change repayment plans?

Borrowers should evaluate the four repayment plans available, which can be found at here at the Federal Student Aid website, Hubert said.

There's also a new repayment plan in the works that borrowers could consider, called the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), which is due in 2026 and is part of the "big beautiful" tax and spending bill signed into law by President Trump on July 4.

"For earners who make less than $10,000, their [monthly] payment will be $10 under RAP," Hubert said.

For those with adjusted gross income (AGI) above $10,000 per year, the repayments will be based on 1% to 10% of their income minus $50 in payments each month for each child the borrower has. "With that in mind, we can estimate that a borrower who has an AGI of $45,000 and no children would have their monthly payment set at $150," she added.

"At a minimum, I would suggest trying to make payments that cover the monthly interest as it begins to accrue to prevent your balance from growing," she added.

James Van Der Beek Reveals Update In Colorectal Cancer Battle: 'Full-Time Job'

-

 • James Van Der Beek Reveals Update In Colorectal Cancer Battle: 'Full-Time Job'

TMZ Staff July 31, 2025 at 7:51 PM

TODAYThe actor -- who was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2023 -- also shares how he and his wife told their six children about his cancer diagnosis, and opens up about their reactions.

James Van Der Beek is sharing an update on his battle with colorectal cancer.

During an interview with TODAY.com, the 48-year-old actor revealed that he'll likely be living with the disease for the "rest of my life." Van Der Beek -- who was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2023 and publicly shared the news last year -- described his cancer battle as a "full-time job."

James Van Der Beek Details How Cancer Battle Affected Marriage - Click image for related story

"I'm just on the journey. ... It's a process. It'll probably be a process for the rest of my life," the Dawson's Creek alum said.

Van Der Beek -- who has not publicly disclosed whether he's undergone typical treatments such as chemotherapy or surgery -- noted that he's made many lifestyle diet changes amid his battle with the disease, including yoga, keto diet, and "finding beauty of just taking things a little bit more slowly and prioritizing rest and really allowing that to be the job."

The 48-year-old reflected on starring in the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, telling TODAY.com that "the greatest thing about work is cancer doesn't exist between action and cut."

"It was fun to drop in and just have a blast because it's such a great cast, a great production, and everybody out there is really talented," he added.

Last November, Van Der Beek revealed his colorectal cancer diagnosis while speaking with People.

"I have colorectal cancer. I've been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family," he said in an exclusive statement.

"There's reason for optimism, and I'm feeling good," he added.

Per the American Cancer Society, Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or the rectum, which make up the large intestine in the digestive system.

Van Der Beek previously shared that the first symptoms he experienced were bowel changes, before he then underwent a colonsocopy, which ultimately led to his diagnosis.

"I got screened at 46," the Varsity Blues star told TODAY.com. "I didn't realize they had dropped it to 45. I thought I was way ahead of the game."

"Even just the slightest little change, it could be something, but ... don't think that not having symptoms means you don't have to get screened, especially for something that is this curable when caught early," he shared. "That's really what I want to get across."

"I ate as well as I could. I was healthy. I was in amazing cardiovascular shape," he explained. "There was no reason in my mind that I should have gotten a positive diagnosis."

After publicly revealing his diagnosis last year, Van Der Beek said he's even received support from strangers -- several of whom have shared that his diagnosis have inspired them to get screened.

"Guys I see at the gas station, people come up to me at a coffee shop, I appreciate it every time," he said. "That's been stuff that really makes me cry. When people say, 'I got checked, I got a colonoscopy, I got a polyp removed,' ... just to save somebody that journey."

Meanwhile, Van Der Beek opened up about how him and his wife, Kimberly, shared the news of his cancer diagnosis with their six kids during an appearance on the Today show.

The One Tree Hill alum -- who shares Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 6, Jeremiah, 2, with Kimberly -- said, "I'm far from an expert, but our approach was just be as honest as possible, as honest to the degree of their understanding, right?"

"Because they know. They can sense that Dad's having a tough day. They know if Dad's in pain," he continued. "They know, and so by not telling them I think you'e confusing them even more."

View this post on Instagram

Van Der Beek went on share advice for other parents who may be experiencing a similar struggle, and are finding a way to tell their children about their diagnosis.

"Just allow yourself to be surprised by their resiliency," he explained. "When you tell them what you're doing, and you tell them the approach, they can see it and they can feel it, and I think it's also your journey is their journey."

"Don't rob them of the opportunity for them to show up for you, emotionally," he added. "I have kids making me tea. 'Dad, what do you need?' There's been a lot of beauty that's come out of it, but I would love to save everybody this journey, which is why I'm saying get screened."

During his appearance on the morning show, Van Deer Beek shared that he's "feeling great."

"Today, I'm feeling great, yeah. It's been a journey," he said, adding, "There are just so many ups and downs and so many unknowns. Cancer is, I call it a full-time job."

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Alec Baldwin says the year since his trial suddenly ended with a dismissal has been far better than the few years that preceded it, and the affect that time has had on him has been "immeasurable."

"Something as powerful as that happens in your life, you don't know how much it changes you," he said. "I can't even tell you how different I am from three-and-a-half years ago. And what I want and what I don't want, and how I want to live my life and not live my life."

The 67-year-old actor spoke to The at San Diego's Comic-Con International, where he was part of a panel on 75 years of Charles Schulz's "Peanuts," whose simplicity, existential philosophy and moral outlook have been very much on his mind.

In a foreword Baldwin wrote for "The Complete Peanuts 1977-1978," he said while reading Schulz's newspaper comic strip every day as a child, he realized Charlie Brown, more than anyone, wanted the things he wanted.

Chief among those wants are "the desire to have friends and the desire to hold your friends close to you."

That hasn't changed in the years since.

"Come on, what man my age doesn't relate to Charlie Brown? If Charlie Brown was 67 years old, he'd be me, but he wouldn't have been stupid enough to have seven (small) children," he said with a laugh.

But he aspires to the qualities of a different character.

"Lucy. I want to be Lucy. Lucy is in charge. She's got it all figured out," he said. "She pauses for a moment of self-awareness, but not too long."

Baldwin said he admired Schulz's simple line drawings combined with the real circumstances of the characters, embodied by real children's voices when the animated holiday specials emerged in his childhood.

"It's so complicated and simple at the same time, which is what I think makes it beautiful," he said.

And he admired Schulz's willingness to embrace melancholy, and deeper darknesses, in stories about inner struggle that needed no villains.

"A dog sitting on top of a dog house would have the same impact on you as, like, Nietzsche, he said," looking across the room at Snoopy. "They should have named the dog Nietzsche."

Baldwin's career has had several distinct phases. Early on he played tough husbands and boyfriends in supporting roles including "Married to the Mob" and "Working Girl." He moved on to heroic leading man in "The Hunt for Red October" and "The Shadow."

Downshifting to memorable character parts, he showed his gift for manly speeches in "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "The Departed," and his comedy prowess in seven seasons of "30 Rock" and as a constant host and guest on "Saturday Night Live."

In July 2024 his trial in New Mexico on an involuntary manslaughter charge in the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western "Rust" fell apart halfway through. A judge dismissed the case on allegations authorities withheld evidence.

"I can't believe that happened on that day the way it happened," he said. "And it couldn't have been better for us in certain terms because of the malice and so forth and everything that's embodied in that whole situation."

The next phase is uncertain. He says he's "just trying to move forward with my wife and my family."

He and wife Hilaria and their seven small kids recently appeared on the TLC reality series "The Baldwins."

He says he has successfully sold his young ones on "Peanuts," especially the Halloween and Christmas specials, as he did with his now nearly 30-year-old daughter Ireland when she was young.

He notices their personalities zig-zagging between the traits of Schulz's characters.

"They're Charlie Brown, now they're Snoopy, now they're Schroeder, now they're Linus, now they're Pig-Pen," he said. "They're Pig-Pen most of the time, I must say."

And their house is full of themed toys.

He keeps a small Snoopy figure among the things in his office, a reminder to try to maintain "love, kindness, patience."

"Peanuts are still kind of like, in that zone," he said. "Let's just try to be good people."

Greta Lee rides a lightcycle in new 'Tron: Ares' footage at Comic-Con

-

 • Greta Lee rides a lightcycle in new 'Tron: Ares' footage at Comic-Con

Brian Truitt, USA TODAYJuly 26, 2025 at 12:22 AM

SAN DIEGO – No one's giddier than Greta Lee about being in a "Tron" movie.

Directed by Joachim Rønning, "Tron: Ares" (in theaters Oct. 10) brings the computer programs from the digital Grid into the real world for the first time, all set to a cool Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.

A Comic-Con panel for the sci-fi action film on Friday, July 25, debuted new footage, including a moment where digital warriors Ares (Jared Leto) and Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith) are sent to reality to take an important piece of code from programmer Eve Kim (Lee). A high-speed chase ensues, and Eve winds up stealing one of her pursuers' lightcycles.

Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox

Eve Kim (Greta Lee) runs from a tank from the Grid that invades the real world in "Tron: Ares."

And it kind of made her life. "I told my agents to find me something where I can ride a lightcycle. I actually got to ride one. It was insane," said Lee ("Past Lives"). "I never could have imagined it could be that fun." Her character is also seen in the Grid riding a nifty speeder vehicle alongside Ares, with Athena's drones in hot pursuit. (She makes a deal with Ares that he'll return her to the real world in exchange for the code he needs.)

One person almost as excited as Lee is the OG "Tron" star himself, Jeff Bridges. "It's so cool, man!" said the actor, who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn from the 1982 first film and 2010's "Tron: Legacy." "Artificial intelligence, that's on everybody's hearts and minds these days, and I'm glad to be part of this story."

Bridges was joined on the panel by original "Tron" writer/director Steven Lisberger, who said Bridges has "been a gift to 'Tron' since day one" and over the years has seen "Tron" become real life. "That's more far out than 'Tron,' " he said.

"We kind of created our own genre with virtual adventure and it's not going away," the filmmaker added. "It's not that Tron was ahead of its time. It's that everyone else was late."

Jared Leto plays the super-intelligent program Ares in Disney's "Tron: Ares."

Leto admitted that he's an "official 'Tron' superfan," and the actor spearheaded the making of the third movie. Back in 1982, "video games were exploding, and films were a huge part of my life. ('Tron') just grabbed a hold of me. It took me to a place I'd never been before and rattled my imagination."

During his first day on the set, Bridges heard that Leto only wanted to be called by his character name, Ares. "I could understand that," Bridges said. "It's a tough part, man, to play a program. I figured I'm playing Flynn, I'm the guy who created this thing, but I didn't wanted to offend him as a thespo. I said, 'Can I call you Air?' He said, 'You can call me whatever you want.' "

Leto got such a kick out of being around Bridges that he actually yelled "cut" early during one take: "I couldn't stop smiling because I was working with this guy."

There is connective tissue between "Ares" and the original "Tron," from props to characters: For example, Evan Peters plays Julian Dillinger, a descendant of "Tron" baddie Edward Dillinger (David Warner). Lee said "Ares" is "absolutely for superfans and die-hards, but we have this exciting opportunity to usher in a whole new audience for 'Tron.' I think we'll be able to connect a lot of different people with this movie."

Leto also shouted out "Tron" music over the years. He called the Daft Punk soundtrack "incredible" and was downright giddy himself about Nine Inch Nails' contributions to "Ares." A new music video for the single "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" premiered at Comic-Con.

"Very few people could fill those shoes," said Leto, and Nine Inch Nails "made music that will last a lifetime."

As Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour draws to a close, Blue Ivy emerges as a star

-

 • As Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour draws to a close, Blue Ivy emerges as a star

SARAH JONES-SMITH July 26, 2025 at 12:03 AM

"Who they came to see?" Beyoncé asks as she performs her 2023 single "My House" during the Cowboy Carter tour. For many, the answer has been Blue Ivy.

Blue Ivy Carter, the Grammy-winning artist's 13-year-old daughter, is more present than ever on stage, and fans are impressed by the growth from her first performance years ago to now.

Isabella Kerr, 15, has admired Beyoncé for years, but said she attended the Cowboy Carter tour specifically to experience Blue Ivy's moves in person.

"People are saying, "Oh, she's a mini Beyoncé," but no, I think she's the first Blue. Everything about her when she's on stage is electrifying," said Kerr.

The Cowboy Carter tour concludes Saturday in Las Vegas. The tour's 30 previously stops have fans buzzing that Blue Ivy is well on her way to being a next generation powerhouse.

Blue Ivy's stage presence grows on Cowboy Carter tour

Blue first graced the stage at 11 years old during her mother's 2023 Renaissance tour, appearing during the legacy-celebrating anthems "My Power" and "Black Parade." Supporters anticipated her performance at each stop.

She performed again during "Beyoncé Bowl," the NFL Christmas Day Halftime Show that was just nominated for four Emmy Awards. She danced alongside the icon as she performed songs from the "Cowboy Carter" album for the first time.

"Even the difference between the Renaissance Tour and now, you can tell she's really grown in her confidence," said fan and artist Olivia Ellis. "You can tell she has a different vibe about her."

On the Cowboy Carter tour, she can almost be mistaken for one of Beyoncé's professional dancers. She is on stage for nearly every song and has a solo recreating her mother's choreography from her 2006 "Déjà-vu" music video, a nod to the undeniable similarities between the two.

An inherited professionalism

Online videos of Blue display professionalism comparable to her mother's during the Cowboy Carter tour. During a rainy New Jersey stop, she brought out towels to dry her area of the stage before nailing her "America Has a Problem" choreography.

In another unexpected moment during a Chicago show, her earring got caught on Beyoncé's hair. Blue remained calm, removed the jewelry and motioned to the singer that it was safe in her hand as they both seamlessly continued.

"It's the family business," said Kinitra D. Brooks, an academic and author of "The Lemonade Reader," a collection that explores the nuances of Beyoncé's 2016 visual album, "Lemonade." "She is literally studying under the best person doing it out there today. Why wouldn't she take advantage of that opportunity?"

Blue Ivy's fans dub themselves as the 'Ivy League'

In "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," fans were given a behind-the-scenes look at the decision-making process the first time Blue was allowed to perform. Beyoncé expressed how nervous she was about her child being in front of thousands of people made her, revealing she initially said no.

"I did not think it was an appropriate place for an 11-year-old on a stadium stage," she said in the documentary. "I made a deal with her, and I said, 'If you practice and you show your commitment, I'll let you do one show.'" Blue Ivy fulfilled her end of the deal, and a fan base was formed: the "Ivy League."

Kerr says Blue's accomplishments inspire her to work harder to achieve her own dreams. "She worked to be on stage, and look at her now. If I work to what I want to be, I can be killing it like her."

At last month's Cowboy Carter Paris stop, members of the Beyhive and Ivy League finally got what they had been asking for — Blue Ivy merchandise. Shirts with the teen's face and the phrase "Déjà Blue" plastered on the front were available for purchase.

Prior to that, fans were creating their own custom pieces that highlighted Blue and Beyoncé's connection.

At the MetLife Stadium show, Ellis wore a custom corset top she painted, showcasing Blue Ivy and her 8-year-old sister, Rumi Carter, on stage with Beyoncé during "Protector," a track from the "Cowboy Carter" album that Rumi is featured on.

"I thought that would just be a really fun moment to highlight on a corset," she said. "It's just really cool to see her as a mom because we've all grown up with Beyoncé, and now it's like her show is kind of like a family affair."

Mother-daughter duos resonate with Beyoncé and Blue Ivy's bond

Blue Ivy's confidence and professionalism are not only a testament to her hard work, but Beyoncé's motherhood.

Mother-daughter duos around the globe filled stadium seats, excited to watch Beyoncé and her daughter display their strong bond for the world to see. In many cases, the mothers have been Beyoncé fans for years and are excited for their daughters to grow up with Blue Ivy, a high-flyer for their generation.

Tanazha Baylis took her now 11-year-old daughter, Aria Brown, to the Renaissance tour, where she did not miss a beat dancing along to Blue Ivy's "My Power" choreography.

Brown was so determined to attend the Cowboy Carter Tour that she started selling popular toys, such as slime and Squishmallows, and saving her money.

"She literally was like, 'Mom, I don't know what you're going to do, but I have to go to this concert,'" said Baylis. "I just had to make it happen after that."

Brown became a Beyoncé fan after participating in a dance recital with a theme centered around the superstar's career throughout the years. Baylis, who says she has always been a big fan, is happy to share these experiences with her daughter.

"It just showed her a cool mom and daughter, and it's just something that she can do as well. Beyoncé is a little older but, with seeing Blue there, it made it tangible for her."

Although there is no solid answer for what the future holds for Blue Ivy, it is widely recognized that the possibilities are limitless.

"We couldn't imagine that Beyoncé would do all of these things that she could do. All we saw were people trying to put limitations on her," said Brooks. "I think one of the things that Beyoncé wants us to do and what she wants for Blue is for us to not put those limitations on Blue."

Nearly two weeks after Andy Byron, the tech company's married CEO, was caught on a Coldplay concert kiss cam with his arms around Astronomer HR executive Kristin Cabot, the Goop founder, 52, starred in a new ad for the company. Paltrow's ex-husband, Chris Martin, played a key role in the viral moment.

The video was shared to the company's social media accounts and captioned, "Thank you for your interest in Astronomer."

Paltrow, who was married to Martin from 2003 until 2016, appears in business casual attire, sitting at a desk for a quick announcement.

"I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer," she said. The Marty Supreme actress added that the company had received "a lot of questions over the last few days" since the scandal went viral.

Cabot is also reportedly married. Both she and Byron have since resigned from the company.

After her introduction, Paltrow explained that she would be answering the most common questions Astronomer has received thus far — the first being, "OMG! What the actual f---?"

In a hilarious twist, the Iron Man actress dodged the inquiry.

"Yes, Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow, unifying the experience of running data, ML and AI pipelines at scale," Paltrow said, using her opportunity as temporary spokesperson to highlight what Astronomer does.

The next question to Astronomer was, "How is your social media team holding —"

Before the full question could appear on the screen, Paltrow again pivoted, mentioning that the company still has room for their Beyond Analytics event in September.

Without answering any of the burning questions, Paltrow concluded, "We will now be returning to what we do best, which is delivering game-changing results for our customers. Thank you for your interest in Astronomer."

Rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart ends holdout, signs $18.97 million deal with Bengals

-

 • Rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart ends holdout, signs $18.97 million deal with Bengals

JOE REEDY July 25, 2025 at 7:20 PM

FILE - Texas A&M's Shemar Stewart, the Cincinnati Bengals first round draft pick, 17th overall, speaks to members of the media during an NFL football news conference at Paycor Stadium, April 25, 2025, in Cincinnati, Ohio. (AP Photo/Joe Maiorana, file) ()

Shemar Stewart and the Cincinnati Bengals agreed to a contract on Friday, ending the rookie defensive end's three-day holdout from training camp.

Stewart's agent, Zac Hiller of LAA, said the four-year deal is worth $18.97 million guaranteed, including a $10.4 million signing bonus.

The Bengals and Stewart were deadlocked over contract language that could potentially void future guarantees if there are any off-field incidents or conduct detrimental to the team.

Other teams have had that language, but this was the first time Cincinnati included that provision with a first-round pick.

Stewart, the 17th overall pick in April's draft, eventually agreed to the provision, but got more of his signing bonus now instead of later in the season.

Stewart had only 4 1/2 total sacks during three seasons at Texas A&M, but at 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds they are hoping to refine his pass rushing skills as well as step into the starting lineup for the Sept. 7 opener at Cleveland.

When Stewart does step onto the practice field, it will be his first time suiting up as a Bengal. He did not participate in offseason workouts after not signing an injury waiver.

"He learned a lot in the classroom, but at the end of the day for us when it comes down to technique and just our core fundamentals, the only way to go out there and create great habits is to do it every day," defensive coordinator Al Golden said on Monday. "So from that standpoint, there was a time constraint there on what he's done on the field. And obviously we need to get him out there and get him going."

Trey Hendrickson — the Bengals other projected starter at defensive end — remains away from training camp as the two sides try to reach a contract extension. Hendrickson led the NFL with 17 1/2 sacks last season and is seeking a deal that matches what the league's top pass rushers are earning.

Cincinnati was 9-8 last season, but missed the playoffs for the second straight season due to its struggles on defense. The Bengals finished 25th in the league in total defense (348.3 yards allowed per game) and lost four games last season in which they scored at least 30 points.

Stewart's signing means Cleveland running back Quinshon Judkins is the only unsigned NFL draft pick. Judkins, the 36th overall selection, was arrested on July 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a charge of battery and domestic violence. Browns general manager Andrew Berry said on Thursday the team is continuing to gather more information on the incident, which is why Judkins remains unsigned.
