Colorado pledges not to enforce gender identity rules for Christian children's camp after lawsuit

FIRST ON FOX—Colorado has formally agreed to exclude religious children's camps from the state's transgender accomodation licensing requirements after a Christian camp filed a federal lawsuit.

In a new settlement agreement shared first with Fox News Digital, the Colorado Department of Early Childhood said it would not force Camp IdRaHaJe or other faith-based children's resident camps to adopt new gender identity rules in order to maintain a state license.

The Colorado Department of Early Childhood (CDEC) amended its state licensing rules in February to incorporate the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act (CADA). Under the new rules, children's resident camps in the state that are considered "places of public accommodation" must allow campers access to showers, sleeping and dressing facilities that align with the campers' gender identity. The department previously implemented gender identity rules regarding bathrooms in 2018.

Camp IdRaHaJe, which derives its name from the hymn, "I'd Rather Have Jesus," is a Christian children's summer camp for kids ages 6 to 17 that has operated in the state since 1948.

Which Goddess Represents You, Based on Zodiac Sign originally appeared on Parade.

Since the dawn of time, many different facets and manifestations of feminine power have been expressed through the ancient goddesses in many cultures worldwide. Being complex figures with rich symbolism, some feminine deities share certain qualities and characteristics due to their absorption from region to region. The worship of goddesses is one of the most ancient practices, dating back to Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

Over time, our connection with these deities has evolved from devotion to embodiment, guiding us into connecting with "the goddess within." Below is the goddess you are connected to, according to your zodiac sign. Embody your Sun's sign goddess for spiritual development, your Moon sign's goddess for emotional fulfillment, and our Rising sign's goddess to elevate your visibility.

Your Goddess Archetype, Based on Zodiac Sign

Check for your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.

READ: Each Zodiac Sign's Best Aesthetic, According to Astrologers

Aries: Athena

You are connected to the legendary Greek goddess Athena, a symbol of passion, action, and wisdom. As the daughter of Zeus, she frequently aided masculine heroes like Perseus, Heracles, and Odysseus with her strategic thinking. Athena's strength is reflected in her association with justice and law, two characteristics reflected in your opposite (sister) zodiac sign, Libra. Awaken your inner Athena by adding a branch of an olive tree or the image of an owl to your rituals or altar.

Taurus: Gaia

The primordial goddess Gaia aligns with the fertile and life-giving characteristics of your sign, Taurus. As the representative spirit of our planet, she is an endless source of creation, reflecting the power you have to manifest with the sole practice of connecting with your five senses. Harness Gaia's infinite gifts by adopting a slow living approach to life, tapping into your creative potential, spending time in nature, and purposedly protecting any of her creations.

Gemini: Iris

The goddess Iris was known as "the messenger of the gods," representing communication, oaths, and agility. With her rainbow wings, Iris was known for her incredible speed, traveling between the heavens, land, and sea to deliver information to Hera, the Queen of all Gods. On gray days, invoke your inner Iris by adding the colors of the rainbow to your altar, your outfits, or your artistic creations. Chasing rainbows, figuratively and literally, also gets you closer to the magic of this unique, colorful goddess.

Cancer: Hekate

No other zodiac sign is connected to the moon like you are, which is why Hekate, the ultimate moon goddess, protects you. As the goddess of the night, the moon, and witchcraft, she was deeply intuitive and a fierce protector of the vulnerable, often depicted with torches in Greek mythology. Hekate's guidance is specifically welcomed when you are at a crossroads, Cancer. Call in her blessing by performing fire rituals right before the day, exactly on the day, and one day after the full moon.

Leo: Sekhmet

Being the only zodiac sign connected to our solar system's star aligns you with the ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet. This half-lion, half-woman deity was said to be born from the eye of the Sun god Ra. Leo's connection to royalty comes from Sekmet's leadership and authority, as she was the fierce protector of the pharaohs. This Lionness goddess is one to call in when you're up against something really hard to accomplish, regardless of its nature. Invoke her by adding fire, beer, and red, orange, and yellow flowers to your altar.

Virgo: Ceres

Also known as Demeter in Greek mythology, Ceres is the Roman goddess of agriculture and harvesting, closely mirroring Virgo's strong connection to the earth element. The seasonal focus Ceres and Virgo share sets the tone for the body's response to nature's natural rhythms, highlighting themes of wellness and the mind, body, and spirit alignment. When you're feeling out of synch with your body, connect with this bountiful goddess by gardening or cooking healthy meals.

Libra: Aphrodite

Your sign's planetary ruler, Venus, is the equivalent of the Roman goddess Aphrodite, the epitome of beauty, class, and charisma. In mythology, she was the incarnated representation of sexuality and pleasure, often portrayed in nude and semi-nude poses, and admiring herself in the mirror. While Venus was in love with love, her role was also associated with fairness and harmony. You experience Venusian blessings every time you admire yourself and move through life as the queen that you are!

MORE: 4 Zodiac Signs With the Clearest Intuition, According to Astrologers

Scorpio: Kali

The Hindu goddess Kali is closely associated with Scorpio, as both bring the themes of intensity and transformation that are part of the cycle of death and rebirth. Being an archetype of dark feminine energy, Kali embodies the destruction that occurs before the creation of something new, shattering the illusion of the ego. Awaken your inner Kali when you're in the middle of a deep transformation by repeating her name while practicing yoga poses like Malasana and Goddess Pose.

Sagittarius: Artemis

Untamed and free, Artemis is a Sagittarian feminine archetype as the goddess of hunt, wilderness, and wild animals. She was the daughter of Zeus (Jupiter) and a protector of women and children, often depicted carrying a bow and an arrow to symbolise her independent, exploratory spirit. Your inner Artemis activates when you're exploring your connection to the animals, nature, the moon, and the vastness of the cosmos.

Capricorn: Inanna

One of the most ancient goddesses, Innanna, feels aligned with Capricorn's old soul nature. Innana was the mentee of Enki, the creation myth Sumerian god who was depicted as half-fish, half-human. Since Inanna is one of the first deities with written evidence in the western world, her archetype influenced other later goddesses like Ishtar and Aphrodite. The winter—especially at the solstice—is a potent time to harness your connection with this ancient goddess by incorporating the eight-pointed star and a piece of lapis lazuli into your rituals and meditations.

FURTHER: 3 Birth Months With a Heart-of-Gold, According to Experts

Aquarius: Libertas

As an Aquarius, you're strongly connected to the themes of freedom and independence of the goddess Libertas. This Roman goddess was often portrayed wearing the liberty cap as an anti-slavery symbol against tyranny. While Liberta's archetype is not that well-known in mainstream culture, her symbolism was part of coins and artwork of democracies in the Western world. You are channeling your inner Libertas whenever you're standing up for what's right, in the spirit of forward thinking and liberation.

Pisces: Saraswati

The Hindu goddess of knowledge, learning, music, and the arts is connected to Pisces. In Sanskrit, Saraswati means "essence" and "flowing water," bringing Pisces themes of spirituality and creativity. As the last zodiac sign of the wheel, the Piscean spirituality reflects Saraswati's inclination to meditation, spirituality, and oneness. Invoke this hindy goddess by playing music or repeating the mantra "aim" for a total of twelve times.

They voted for Trump. Most still back him - but not on everything

Julia HarteJune 25, 2025 at 6:09 PM

By Julia Harte

(Reuters) -From her corner of the United States near Houston, Texas, stay-at-home mother Loretta Torres, 38, admires President Donald Trump's confidence and bargaining style. She has no complaints with his presidency.

In Des Moines, Iowa, Lou Nunez, an 83-year-old U.S. Army veteran, has been horrified by Trump's cuts to federal agencies, whipsaw tariff announcements, and crackdowns on protesters.

Terry Alberta, 64, a pilot in southwestern Michigan, supports most of Trump's policies but he thinks some of the slashed federal spending might have to be restored and he dislikes the president's demeanor. "I get really frustrated with him when he starts calling people names and just saying crazy things," he said.

Although they all helped elect Trump in November, Torres, Nunez and Alberta have very different reactions to his presidency so far. They are among 20 Trump voters Reuters has interviewed monthly since February about the president's dramatic changes to the United States' government, trade policy and immigration enforcement, among other issues.

Nunez and one of the other 20 voters now regret casting a ballot for the president. Torres and four others say they fully support his administration. But most – like Alberta – fall somewhere in between.

The 20 voters were selected from 429 respondents to a February 2025 Ipsos poll who said they voted for Trump in November and were willing to speak to a reporter. They are not a statistically representative portrait of all Trump voters, but their ages, educational backgrounds, races/ethnicities, locations and voting histories roughly corresponded to those of Trump's overall electorate.

Even monthly check-ins cannot always keep pace with the breakneck news cycle under Trump. Reuters most recently interviewed the group in May, before Trump deployed U.S. service members to Los Angeles and other cities to quell widespread protests against the administration's immigration crackdown and prior to tensions erupting with Iran.

Trump's efforts to tighten border security were most popular among the group. Describing their concerns about the administration, these voters most often cited the economic uncertainty triggered by Trump's federal cuts and tariffs. That tracks with the latest Ipsos-Reuters poll findings, which show Trump polling below his overall approval rating on the economy, and above it on immigration.

Recent polls also show that Americans who helped elect Trump to his second term overwhelmingly like what they see so far. In a six-day Ipsos-Reuters poll that concluded on June 16, 9 out of 10 respondents who said they voted for Trump in November also said they approved of his performance in office so far.

"I like the way he portrays himself as being a strong leader," said Torres. "It makes us look stronger to other countries."

White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement that Trump had delivered on his campaign promises by reducing U.S. border crossings to historic lows and keeping inflation lower than expected.

"The Administration is committed to building on these successes by slashing the waste, fraud, and abuse in our government and levelling the playing field for American industries and workers with more custom-made trade deals," Desai said.

'ANXIETY IS THE BUZZWORD'

Most of the 20 voters interviewed say they now have qualms about some of Trump's most extreme measures.

Brandon Neumeister, 36, a Pennsylvania state corrections worker and former National Guardsman, said he disagreed with a May request by the Department of Homeland Security for 20,000 National Guard members to help detain illegal immigrants. "To deploy troops on American soil in American cities, I think that sends a very severe message," he said.

Neumeister voted for Trump hoping for lower prices and inflation, and said he knows it will take time for the president's economic policies to yield results. But people close to him have lost jobs as a result of Trump downsizing the federal government, and several friends of his are anxious about losing pensions or healthcare due to budget cuts at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

"Anxiety is the buzzword for everything right now," Neumeister said, adding that it was "hard to say" whether he's glad Trump is president.

Federal workforce reductions are also wearing on Robert Billups, 34, an accountant in Washington state currently searching for his next job. He has seen federal positions disappear from job sites, and he frequently gets worried calls from his mother, who is a contractor with the Internal Revenue Service.

"This is more than my mom has ever reached out to me. I feel like it's freaking her out," he said.

Several Trump voters in the group also said they were uneasy about actions by Trump that critics say overstep his presidential authority.

Don Jernigan, 74, a retiree in Virginia Beach, said he likes the outcomes of most of Trump's policies but not the way he sometimes pushes them through, such as his record number of executive orders or his imposition of tariffs on other countries, a power that Jernigan says belongs to Congress.

Nor does he like the fact that Trump accepted a jet given to the United States by Qatar, which Jernigan views as an enemy nation. "Trump works off of ideas. He doesn't work off of principles. He has no principles," Jernigan said.

Overall, however, he thinks Trump is protecting U.S. borders and deterring threats against the nation better than the other candidates for president would have.

Trump's acceptance of the Qatari jet also struck Amanda Taylor, 51, an insurance firm employee near Savannah, Georgia, as potentially unethical. "It just seems a little like he can do whatever he wants to without repercussion," she said.

Taylor, who voted for former President Joe Biden in 2020, says it is too early to tell yet whether Trump is an improvement. She likes Trump's pledges to deport criminals and gang members. But she has been most closely watching economic indicators, especially interest rates, because she and her husband closed on a new house this month.

Among Trump voters with fewer complaints about the president's second term, there are still areas where they hope to see some change.

David Ferguson, 53, hoped the Trump administration would revitalize U.S. manufacturing, and so far he is "pleased with the groundwork" and "at least the direction that they're communicating."

At the industrial supply company in western Georgia where he works as a mechanical engineer and account manager, Ferguson has seen Trump's tariffs drive up prices on a range of products, from roller bearings to food-processing equipment. He does not expect the prices to fall as quickly as they've risen.

Ferguson would like the administration to offer tax incentives to companies like his that are making it possible for more things to be made in the United States. "It would help encourage businesses that are already domesticating manufacturing and give them some relief from the tariffs, kind of reward their good behavior," he said.

Several other Trump voters voiced support for a policy that might surprise left-leaning voters: a clearer legal immigration pathway for aspiring Americans who are law-abiding and want to contribute to the U.S. economy.

Gerald Dunn, 66, is a martial-arts instructor in New York's Hudson Valley and "middle-of-the-road" voter who said he is frustrated by extremism in both U.S. political parties. Dunn said he knows people who have tried to enter the United States legally but encountered "horrendous" red tape.

People with skills and stable employment offers could become "assets to the country" instead of liabilities if it were easier for them to immigrate, Dunn said.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, engineer Rich Somora, 61, said he supports Trump's efforts to deport criminals but he also recognizes that immigrants are increasingly doing key jobs that U.S. citizens don't want to do, such as building construction.

"If somebody's contributing, give them a pathway, you know? I got no problem with that," Somora said.

Diddy trial live updates: Latest on charges, closing arguments in Combs' sex-crimes case

Main Image

-

 • Diddy trial live updates: Latest on charges, closing arguments in Combs' sex-crimes case

Patrick Ryan, Aysha Bagchi and Edward Segarra, USA TODAY June 25, 2025 at 7:30 PM

This story contains graphic descriptions that some readers may find disturbing.

Sean "Diddy" Combs' legal fate hangs in the balance as the music mogul's landmark criminal trial nears a close.

After more than a month of harrowing testimony from several individuals in Combs' personal and professional orbit – from ex-girlfriends Casandra "Cassie" Ventura Fine and "Jane" to Danity Kane alum Dawn Richard and rap peer Kid Cudi – prosecutors rested their case in the sweeping federal sex-crimes proceeding on June 24.

In their final round of arguments, attorneys for the U.S. government zeroed in on graphic evidence from Combs' alleged "freak off" sex parties, which included video footage, text messages and financial records. Prosecutors painted a picture of Combs and his employees being personally involved with organizing the elaborate sexual performances, working with escorts, Combs' partners and others.

Meanwhile, Combs' attorneys rested their case in less than half an hour, with the defense opting not to call any witnesses to the stand. Their arguments mainly focused on romantic – and occasionally explicit – texts between Combs and Ventura Fine.

Although Combs' alleged abuse is at the center of the trial, the Grammy-winning rapper told the court he would not be testifying. Judge Arun Subramanian asked Combs' lead lawyer Marc Agnifilo if he spoke with his client about his right to testify, and Agnifilo said they discussed it at length.

Combs, 55, was arrested in September and charged with sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty.

Take a look back at some of the biggest moments from the trial, as well as where Combs' case stands.

Why didn't Diddy's lawyers call any witnesses?

Prosecutors spent weeks calling dozens of witnesses in their arguments against Combs. The jury heard from his former girlfriends and business associates, federal agents, security officers and others.

But his lawyers wrapped up their case in less than 30 minutes without calling anyone to the stand. Why?

One factor to note: Defendants in criminal cases aren't required to present evidence, and judges instruct juries not to hold that against defendants. To win a guilty verdict, prosecutors have to prove their cases beyond a reasonable doubt.

Combs' lawyers haven't explained why they didn't call any witnesses. But they may think prosecutors haven't cleared that bar, or they don't want to risk calling a witness who could sway the jury against their client.

Baby oil, Cialis: Diddy demands laundry list of supplies for 'freak off'

As prosecutors wrapped up their argument, jurors saw and heard messages from Combs demanding supplies for an alleged "freak off."

"There's no more baby oil," Combs said in one audio message to his chief of staff Kristina "KK" Khorram, chuckling. "I can't believe I'm out of baby oil." He thought he had 20 bottles at the time.

In a separate message to Khorram, Combs said he needed "five more bottles of everything." Later, his team responded that they were bringing him baby oil, lubricant from the brand Astroglide, his Apple TV and multiple lattes.

Combs continued to send audio messages, one asking for vegetable soup and another in which he said, "Can security bring me some money? I need $5,000."

In another message he asked for "a Cialis, please," joking "See? I'm going to keep on calling you to make sure you have everything I need." Cialis is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Diddy says he doesn't want to testify during trial

The embattled rapper verbally confirmed on June 24 he did not want to take the stand – one of the only times Combs spoke out loud during his weekslong trial.

Combs exchanged a few remarks with the judge, saying he was doing "great" and that he thought the judge was managing the trial well. The rapper said it was "solely my decision" not to to testify, and he "thoroughly" discussed it with his legal team.

Has the Diddy trial reached a verdict?

No, a verdict has not yet been reached in Combs' criminal case.

Following presentations from prosecutors and Combs' attorneys, which wrapped June 24, the trial will now enter closing arguments before the jury is sent into deliberations. Closing arguments are expected to begin Thursday, June 26 and stretch into the following day.

Defense attorney Teny Geragos said both prosecutors and defense lawyers estimate their arguments will last four hours each.

Regarding jury deliberations, a meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, in which prosecutors and Combs' attorneys will talk about jury instructions with Judge Subramanian. Jurors won't be present for the discussion.

Diddy's eerie favorite TV show revealed by ex-girlfriend

Combs' ex-girlfriend, who testified under the pseudonym "Jane," revealed on June 10 the eerie TV show Combs reportedly counts as his favorite.

Under cross-examination, Jane said she "endured" nights in hotels with escorts because she wanted to spend time with Combs – bathing him, rubbing his feet, cuddling with him and watching the NBC true crime series "Dateline" until he fell asleep.

A centerpiece of "Dateline" programming is highlighting injustices and crimes perpetrated by men against women.

Sean "Diddy" Combs watches proceedings as text messages between him and his former chief of staff Kristina Khorram are shown at Combs' sex trafficking trial in New York City, New York, U.S., June 23, 2025 in this courtroom sketch. REUTERS/Jane RosenbergFormer Diddy aide Mia says rapper assaulted Cassie at Brad Pitt movie premiere

Combs' former assistant, a woman who went by the pseudonym "Mia," testified on June 2 that she witnessed a 2012 discussion between Combs and Ventura Fine escalate into physical violence at the premiere of the Brad Pitt film "Killing Them Softly," which took place at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

She claimed she saw Combs grit his teeth while digging his nails into Ventura Fine's arm, and eventually insisted that Ventura Fine leave, which she did.

Diddy's ex-assistant talks 50 Cent feud

Capricorn Clark, another former assistant of Combs who took the stand, recalled an incident concerning the rapper's longtime feud with fellow emcee 50 Cent.

On May 27, Clark testified she was accompanying Combs to an MTV office to speak to reporters when she overheard him tell his security guard that he didn't like "nonsense" in his work, but he did "like guns." Clark noted that 50 Cent was at the MTV offices that day, and "he had an issue with" the rapper.

Combs and 50 Cent's rivalry dates back nearly 20 years. The "Get Rich or Die Tryin" rapper, born Curtis Jackson, is producing a docuseries to premiere on Netflix about the allegations against Combs.

Britney Spears, Michael B. Jordan, Rihanna: Diddy trial filled with celebrity name-drops

Although Ventura Fine and Kid Cudi have arguably been the biggest names to testify at Combs' trial, several Hollywood A-listers were name-dropped throughout the rapper's high-profile case.

Some of these stars included pop singers Rihanna, Beyoncé and Britney Spears; R&B singer-songwriter Usher; music executive Jimmy Iovine; and actor Michael B. Jordan.

During her May 15 testimony, Ventura Fine said Combs suspected that she was in a relationship with Jordan after the pair broke up in 2015, alleging the rapper attempted to get in contact with her afterward.

Former Diddy aide Capricorn Clark alleges physical violence, Kid Cudi break-in

In emotional testimony, Clark alleged the hip-hop mogul kidnapped her and threatened to kill her multiple times while she worked for him.

While on the stand May 27, Clark claimed she was once held against her will for five days after several pieces of jewelry went missing at the rapper's home. She said she was "petrified" and forced to take polygraph tests over and over again.

She also described an alleged break-in carried out by Combs, during which he rushed to Kid Cudi's Los Angeles home with a gun after he learned the fellow rapper, born Scott Mescudi, was dating Combs' ex-girlfriend Ventura Fine.

Why was baby oil found at Diddy's home?

During a September 2024 press conference, U.S. attorney Damian Williams detailed the paraphernalia discovered during the federal raids of Combs' homes. The items included multiple AR-15 guns, large-capacity magazines, "evidence" of Combs' alleged sex crimes and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant.

According to Combs' original indictment, the baby oil bottles were used during the hip-hop mogul's alleged "freak-off" parties, which were described as "elaborate and produced sex performances" that involved sex workers.

Combs and his employees conducted "freak offs" by booking hotel rooms and stocking them with supplies such as baby oil, lube, extra bedsheets and lighting, per the indictment. The rapper allegedly "arranged, directed" and "masturbated" during these sometimes dayslong "performances," and drugs were reportedly distributed to victims, in part, to keep them "obedient and compliant."

What is Diddy charged with?

Combs is facing federal sex-crimes and trafficking charges in a sprawling case that has eroded his status as a power player and kingmaker in the entertainment industry.

He was arrested in September 2024 and later charged with racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. The rapper has pleaded not guilty to the five counts against him.

Racketeering is the participation in an illegal scheme under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Statute, or RICO, as a way for the U.S. government to prosecute organizations that contribute to criminal activity.

Using RICO law, which is typically aimed at targeting multi-person criminal organizations, prosecutors allege that Combs coerced victims, some of whom they say were sex workers, through intimidation and narcotics to participate in "freak offs" – sometimes dayslong sex performances that federal prosecutors allege they have on video.

The King of Pop's Final Words and Last Days Revealed in New Memoir

The King of Pop's Final Words and Last Days Revealed in New Memoir originally appeared on Parade.

The King of Pop passed away 16 years ago, and now one of his close friends is opening up about the star's final days.

Before his tragic death, Michael Jackson was preparing for his highly anticipated This Is It concert residency, which was set to run from July 2009 to March 2010. But the 50-year-old singer never got to see it through — he died just one month before the first show.

Now, Jackson's longtime friend and personal attorney, John Mason, is sharing what he witnessed in those final weeks.

In his new memoir, Crazy Lucky: Remarkable Stories from Inside the World of Celebrity Icons, Mason offers an inside look at Jackson's condition leading up to his death.

"In 2009, I was living in Reno when I got a call from someone who told me that Michael was in 'really bad shape,' Mason wrote, according to Radar Online. "He was trying to tour again, but he had collapsed onstage during rehearsals. Yet, he was back at it the next day. Michael was Michael."

As concerns about Jackson's health mounted, he was also battling severe insomnia. Concert promoter AEG reportedly brought in Dr. Conrad Murray to help manage his condition.

Murray allegedly began administering nightly doses of propofol — a anesthetic typically used in surgery — to help the singer sleep.

According to Mason, Jackson's last words were, "I can't function if I don't sleep. They'll have to cancel it. And I don't want them to cancel it."

Dr. Murray was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter. His Texas medical license was revoked, and his licenses in California and Nevada were suspended. Though sentenced to four years, he was released on parole after serving two.

Mason also claims Jackson was under immense financial pressure, nearing bankruptcy and at risk of losing his beloved Neverland Ranch. He says the medications were meant to help Jackson rest so he could keep performing — but the combination proved fatal.

The Grammy-winner died on June 25, 2009, from cardiac arrest caused by a lethal mix of sedatives and propofol.

Mason's account adds to the ongoing speculation surrounding Jackson's final days — though his recollections remain alleged.

Eastern states swelter in record-breaking heat as 'extremely dangerous' conditions continue

Patrick SmithJune 25, 2025 at 6:34 PM

Almost 150 million people were under heat advisories and warnings Wednesday morning, as the extreme heat wave that has brought sweltering conditions to the eastern half of the country and smashed dozens of temperature records showed no sign of ending.

The National Weather Service said the conditions remain "extremely dangerous" as the Ohio Valley is set to feel the heat through Friday, with more daily and monthly record temperatures expected to be broken.

Eastern heat persists

New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston all hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, as did parts of Maine. Dozens of heat records have been broken this week in the eastern half of the continental United States.

Tuesday was New York's hottest day since 2012, as voters lined up for the Democratic primary election. Wednesday will see another day in the upper-90s with overnight temperatures in the low-70s.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned in a statement Tuesday that the electricity grid downstate was approaching "peak capacity" as people cranked up their air conditioners.

"It is critical to conserve electricity between now and 10:00 PM. That means setting window air conditioning units to 76 degrees and avoiding unnecessary appliance use," she said, while adding that it was still "critical" for people to stay safe in the dangerous heat.

The Washington Monument was shut for a second consecutive day Tuesday as both locals and tourists felt the heat, and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey reached 103 degrees, the hottest it's been since 1966.

The heat has turned fatal, with authorities confirming that a woman in St. Ann, Missouri, died Monday of heat-related causes. Local Police Chief Aaron Jimenez said she died at home after having no water or air conditioning for at least three days.

Two 16-year-old hikers suffering from heat exhaustion had to be rescued from Gap Mountain in Jaffrey on Tuesday — one had to be carried down the mountain to a waiting ambulance, New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation said on Facebook.

NBC Chicago reported that the heat was enough to buckle a section of road in Missouri, and three Chicago-area hospitals were struggling with their air conditioning, leading some patients to be moved.

Cumulative health risks

The weather service warned of the heat wave's cumulative health effects and stressed the importance of drinking enough water and finding somewhere cool, especially for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

"This is after several consecutive days of oppressive heat, which should exacerbate heat-related health impacts. This level of heat is dangerous to anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration," the service said.

"You get the combination of the extreme heat and humidity but no relief," Jacob Asherman, a meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center, told The . "It's kind of been just everything stacked on top of itself ... It just speaks to how strong this heat wave is. This is a pretty, pretty extreme event."

Elsewhere, scattered thunderstorms will hit the Southwest on Wednesday, with possible flash flooding in parts of New Mexico and Texas.

Cooler weather on the way

The heat should ease as the week goes on. A new cold weather front is moving through the mid-Atlantic, bringing highs closer to 90 and, for some areas, the 80s or even 70s.

"There's even a rare backdoor cool front that will drop southward from New England to part of the mid-Atlantic region during the middle and latter part of this week," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said. "This can dramatically drop temperatures by 20-40 degrees in some cases, which is about as big as it gets this time of the year."

Russia's Medvedev calls EU an enemy, says Ukrainian membership would be dangerous

 • Russia's Medvedev calls EU an enemy, says Ukrainian membership would be dangerous

June 25, 2025 at 8:17 PM

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that the European Union had evolved into an enemy of Russia that posed a direct threat to its security, and Moscow was now opposed to Ukraine joining the bloc.

Russia has long been opposed to Ukraine joining the NATO Western military alliance - one of the reasons it gives for its decision to launch a full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022.

But it has in the past been more relaxed about the prospect of Kyiv becoming a member of the EU. President Vladimir Putin said in June 2022 that Russia had "nothing against" that, and the Kremlin said as recently as February that joining the bloc was Ukraine's sovereign right.

However, Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said that the EU had shifted from being an economic bloc dedicated to preventing war into what he called a politicised anti-Russian organisation that was slowly turning into a military bloc.

"Brussels today is a real enemy of Russia. In its current twisted form, the European Union is no less of a threat to us than the North Atlantic Alliance," Medvedev wrote on Telegram.

He said it was therefore wrong to say now that Ukraine should be free to "join anything you like" apart from NATO.

"The EU, stuffed with weapons...is a direct threat to Russia. That is exactly how it should be treated. At least until it changes its approach to us," he added. "Thus, the so-called (idea of) Ukraine in the EU is a danger for our country".

Ukraine applied for EU membership shortly after the start of the war in 2022 and was granted candidate status later that year.

Medvedev said that bilateral cooperation between Moscow and certain individual EU member states should, however, continue. He did not name specific countries, but central European neighbours Hungary and Slovakia have taken pains to maintain cordial relations with Putin since the start of the war.

Pope Leo XIV affirms celibacy for priests, demands 'firm' action on sex abuse

ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV affirmed Wednesday that priests must be celibate and insisted that bishops take "firm and decisive" action to deal with sex abusers, as he gave marching orders Wednesday to the world's Catholic hierarchs.

Leo met in St. Peter's Basilica with about 400 bishops and cardinals from 38 countries attending this week's special Holy Year celebrations for clergy. A day after he gave an uplifting message of encouragement to young seminarians, Leo offered a more comprehensive outline of what bishops must do to lead their flocks.

It's an issue the former Cardinal Robert Prevost would have long pondered given his role as the prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Bishops. In that job from 2023 until his election in May, the Chicago-born Prevost vetted bishop nominations for Pope Francis, identifying the type of leader who would further Francis' view of a church where all are welcome and dialogue is the decisive form of governance.

History's first American pope reaffirmed Wednesday that the primary role of bishops is to forge unity in his diocese among clergy and to be close to his flock in word and deed. Bishops must live in poverty and simplicity, generously opening their homes to all and acting as a father figure and brother to his priests, Leo said.

"In his personal life, he must be detached from the pursuit of wealth and from forms of favoritism based on money or power," he said.

Bishops must remain celibate "and present to all the authentic image of the church, holy and chaste in her members as in her head," he said.

Referring to cases of abuse, he said bishops "must be firm and decisive in dealing with situations that can cause scandal and with every case of abuse, especially involving minors, and fully respect the legislation currently in force."

It was the second time in a week that Leo has commented publicly on the abuse scandal. On Friday night, in a written statement to a crusading Peruvian journalist who documented gross abuses in a Peruvian Catholic movement, Leo said there should be no tolerance in the Catholic Church for any type of abuse. He identified sexual and spiritual abuses, as well as abuses of authority and power in calling for "transparent processes" to create a culture of prevention across the church.

Francis, who in many ways placed Leo in position to succeed him, had also reaffirmed celibacy for Latin rite priests while acknowledging it was a discipline of the church, not doctrine, and therefore could change. But he refused appeals from Amazonian bishops to allow married priests to address the priest shortage in the region.

Prevost spent two decades as a missionary and bishop in Peru and would know well those arguments. But on Wednesday he reaffirmed the celibate priesthood as the "authentic image" of the church.

A DoorDash executive and members of his family have been identified among the eight people who died in a boating accident on Lake Tahoe over the weekend.

Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, from San Francisco, died in the accident, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.

He worked as the global head of strategic sourcing and procurement in DoorDash's finance team.

His parents, Paula Bozinovich, 71, and Terry Pickles, 73, from Redwood City, also died in the accident.

The other victims were identified as Pickles' uncle Peter Bayes, 72, from Lincoln, California; Timothy O'Leary, 71, from Auburn, California; Theresa Giullari, 66, from Honeoye, New York; James Guck, 69, of Honeoye; and Stephen Lindsay, 63, of Springwater, New York.

Ten people were on the boat that capsized in South Lake Tahoe near D.L. Bliss State Park on Saturday afternoon as waves reached 8 feet in height.

Two people were immediately rescued from the water and hospitalized, but ultimately eight bodies were recovered from the water. The last missing person was recovered Monday.

"The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those who have been affected by this tragic event," the sheriff's office said.

DoorDash told NBC News that the company was "heartbroken" by the accident.

"Josh loved his team and was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. During his nearly seven years at DoorDash, he brought a contagious spirit that lifted those around him. The loss of Josh is immeasurable. We miss him deeply and will carry his memory with us always," the company said.

"Our thoughts and love are with his wife, his daughter, his family, and all who were close to him. We are working to support them through this incredibly difficult time," the statement continued.

Sam Singer, a spokesperson for the family, said the group was celebrating Bozinovich's birthday on her son's boat that he purchased a year ago.

Pickles' wife had stayed home to take care of their 7-month daughter, he said, noting the couple split their time between the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe and had used the boat only twice before.

"The waves were so big that the water came onboard and started to fill the boat up and stalled the engine," Singer said of the turbulent weather that saw winds top 35 mph Saturday on the lake.

Pickles' wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, on Tuesday said, "We are devastated by this tragedy."

"We lost my loving husband Josh Pickles, his parents Terry Pickles and Paula Bozinovich, and Uncle Peter Bayes, as well as friends in this tragedy," she said, according to the affiliate. "No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake. Our hearts go out to those who tragically lost their lives and the two survivors of this unexpected and deadly storm on Lake Tahoe."

Asbestos By DAILY MAIL REPORTER Updated: 00:15, 24 September 2010 In a controversial article, The Great Asbestos Hysteria (Mail, February 23), we said that according to the Health and Safety Executive, the risks from white asbestos products are ' insignificant', and 'arguably zero' in the case of lung cancer. The HSE assessments related to specific levels of exposure to white asbestos fibres, not white asbestos products, and found a risk from higher levels.
