"Tron: Ares" blew the roof off of San Diego Comic-Con at its panel on Friday evening, with an eye-popping, ear-blasting laser-light show set to the pulsing original score by Nine Inch Nails. The panel also included two extended clips from the film, and ended with a NIN music video of the original song "As Alive as You Need Me to Be."

The movie is third film in one of the more improbable movie franchises in modern Hollywood, which Disney tacitly acknowledged with how it opened its panel, with an extended trailer that covered the events of the previous two films. The first, 1982's "Tron," stars Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer who gets sucked into the computer mainframe know as the Grid. The movie is best known for its groundbreaking use of computer generated imagery for its visual effects, to capture a purely digital world. But "Tron" was far from a blockbuster, grossing roughly $50 million worldwide (unadjusted). The sequel, "Tron: Legacy," debuted 28 years later, starring Bridges in dual roles as Flynn as an older man and his de-aged digital doppelgänger; it grossed a respectable $410 million globally.

"Tron: Ares" arrives 15 years after "Legacy," and takes the action outside of the virtual world for the first time, with Leto's title character playing a digital soldier brought into the real world by Evan Peters' tech bro character, Julian Dillinger (the namesake of the villain from the 1982 film). Bridges is reprising his role as Flynn, but any more details about his character were left for another day.

The first clip from the film debuted the first lightcycle chase in the movie, in which Dillinger appears to digitally "print" Ares and his compatriot Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith), as well as their lightcycles. He then says they have only 30 minutes to find Eve Kim (Greta Lee), who's left Dillinger's company, Encom, with a memory stick containing important code. Ares uses traffic cameras to find Eve on her motorcycle; they almost capture her, slicing a police car in half in the process with the blade of light that streaks from behind the lightcycles. But Eve ultimately eludes them, winds up taking out Athena and commandeering her lightcycle.

In the second clip, Eve has entered the Grid, and Ares rescues her from an ocean of digital water. He materializes a lightboat and races them both to a portal into the real world, as Athena sends three drones to pursue them. Eve can hardly believe the sleek, glass-like beauty of the world that surrounds her, and agrees to help find the code to help Ares.

During the panel itself, Leto — who also produced the film, and has been attached to it since 2017 — pronounced himself "an official 'Tron' superfan" and said "if I wasn't on the stage, I would be in the audience." He said that when he filmed his first scene with Bridges, he blurted out "cut" mid-take.

"Everyone was surprised, because I don't often do that," Leto said. "The first AD comes over and said, 'Is everything okay? What's wrong?' And I said, 'I just can't stop smiling, because I'm working with this guy."

For his part, Bridges expressed delight at the fact that he's still making "Tron" movies: "'82? 43 years ago? Come on, man!" But he said he started work on the film with a bit of apprehension.

"I remember the first day of wondering how it was going to be," he said. "I heard Jared only wants to be called by his character. Everybody's got different methods and modes. It's a tough part, man, to play a program!"

Moderated by filmmaker and Comic-Con mainstay Kevin Smith, the panel maintained that lighthearted atmosphere throughout, which kept the conversation from going anywhere near the June Air Mail story in which nine women alleged that Leto engaged in misconduct with them during the 2000s. (Leto has denied any wrongdoing.)

Lee, marveling at the experience of her first Comic-Con, said she told her agents, "Find me something where I can ride a lightcycle." Co-stars Arturo Castro and Hasan Minhaj, who play Encom executives, joked about the possible parallels between their film's fictional company and the studio that made the movie.

"It was like walking into Disneyland every day," Castro said of the sets. "And I'm not just saying that because they signed my checks, because they have my family."

"Let this film bring as much shareholder value to the company as possible this quarter," added Minhaj. "Really what this is about is Encom and its earnings, which is a metaphor for the Walt Disney Corporation, one of the best corporations."

"Tron: Ares" will debut in theaters on Oct. 10.

Tesla gets multiple shareholder proposals related to investment in xAI

-

 • Tesla gets multiple shareholder proposals related to investment in xAI

July 25, 2025 at 5:23 PM

(Reuters) -Tesla said on Friday it had received a number of shareholder proposals regarding the company's plan to invest in CEO Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI.

Musk ruled out a merger between Tesla and xAI earlier in July, but said he planned to hold a shareholder vote on investment in the startup by the automaker.

The proposals come amid significant funding activity for xAI this year. The startup completed a $5 billion debt raise alongside a separate $5 billion strategic equity investment, Morgan Stanley said last month.

Musk has pursued an integration strategy across his business empire, with xAI acquiring social media platform X in March for $33 billion to enhance its chatbot training capabilities, while also integrating the Grok chatbot into Tesla vehicles.

The potential investment discussion comes as Tesla faces various challenges, including Musk's political activities, which have impacted demand for its electric vehicles and triggered a 22% drop in its shares this year.

"Shareholders are welcome to put forward any shareholder proposals they'd like," Musk said on Tesla's quarterly earnings call on Wednesday.

Tesla, which will hold its annual shareholder meeting on November 6, said it would only include one proposal on each topic in its proxy statement, in accordance with the SEC rules.

Earlier this month, the board set July 31 as the deadline for the submission of shareholder proposals to be included in the proxy statement.

Coach Deion Sanders returns to Colorado after recovering from health issue

-

 • Coach Deion Sanders returns to Colorado after recovering from health issue

Brent Schrotenboer, USA TODAY July 25, 2025 at 2:23 PM

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has returned to campus in Boulder after recovering from an undisclosed health issue at his ranch in east Texas this summer.

Sanders, 57, announced it on social media July 25, just a couple of days before his team is due to report for preseason training camp. A school spokesman confirmed he is in Boulder. He also is scheduled to hold a news conference with his medical team in Boulder on Monday.

"Back and Feeling Great!" he said on social media site X.

Sanders has a history of blood circulation issues in his legs that led to surgeries in 2023 and the amputation of two toes before that. But he hasn't revealed what ailed him since suffering the health setback in May and then missing several events in May and June, including a speaking engagement in Florida and Colorado's annual high school and youth football camps.

Football recruits who visited in June were told he was out sick. He did appear at a Big 12 Conference media days event July 9 but declined to talk about his health.

GONE FROM CAMPUS: Did Deion Sanders' absence affect Colorado's recruiting? What recruits said about it.

He then recently left his ranch to visit his son Shilo at preseason camp for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on July 23.

His eldest son Deion Jr. talked about the ordeal in a video he posted from the ranch on YouTube on July 22.

"I'm kind of sad," Deion Jr. said of his last day at the ranch. "I'm not gonna lie to you. I learned to really actually love this place. I really never stayed out here much. … It's not even just about being here. It was like the battle that was fought here. The battle that was fought and won here. That's like the main important thing. Boys didn't left the house for two months."

He called it a blessing and said details would be coming soon, as documented on video, much in the spirit of the "Coach Prime" marketing machine.

"He's gonna tell y'all whatever he went through very soon, and I've got a lot of it recorded on video," Deion Jr. said. "So you'll be able to see what he went through."

Colorado opens the season at home against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29. It will be Deion Sanders' third season at Colorado after finishing 4-8 in 2023 and 9-4 in 2024. But it will be a challenge after several top players left for the NFL, including his quarterback son Shedeur, safety son Shilo and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

David Letterman calls Paramount 'gutless' for canceling Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show'

-

 • David Letterman calls Paramount 'gutless' for canceling Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show'

KiMi Robinson, USA TODAY July 25, 2025 at 10:45 PM

David Letterman is questioning the motivations behind the shock cancellation of his former CBS home, "The Late Show."

Speaking with former "Late Night with David Letterman" colleagues Barbara Gaines and Mary Barclay in a July 25 clip from "The Barbara Gaines Show" on Letterman's YouTube channel, the 78-year-old comedian did not hold back. He threw barbs at CBS parent company Paramount Global and David Ellison, who's slated to become CEO after Paramount merges with his Skydance Media in an $8.4 billion deal.

"It's all very strange. It's very complicated, but it was a bit of a surprise, wasn't it?" Letterman said. As the 14-minute Zoom conversation continued, he eventually called Paramount pulling the plug on Stephen Colbert's show "pure cowardice" and "gutless."

Letterman hosted the show from 1993 until 2015, at which point Colbert took over post-"Colbert Report." After Colbert announced on July 17 that "The Late Show" would be ending in May after more than 30 years, Paramount released a statement that called the move "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night."

The media company also maintained: "It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content, or other matters happening at Paramount."

While Colbert's show is the top rated at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT, it was losing a reported $40 million a year.

David Letterman blasts explanation that 'Late Show' was canceled for financial reasons

Letterman speculated that Paramount is capitulating to Ellison, who might not "want any trouble from that guy," referring to Colbert, long known for his political satire and criticism of President Donald Trump.

"Not only are we going to get rid of that guy, we're going to get rid of the whole franchise so you don't have to worry about another guy," Letterman said in an impersonation of Paramount executives. "It's gone, buddy!"

"I think it's sad, but what this indicates also is (Ellison doesn't) want any trouble along the lines of freedom of the press or free speech or freedom of expression," Letterman surmised. "They don't want to get their hands dirty; they don't want the government going after them."

David Letterman speaks during the taping of the "Vax Live" fundraising concert at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on May 2, 2021.

He also cast doubt on the explanation that the "Late Show" cancellation was "purely a financial decision."

"I don't think it was money. I think it was all to make sure (Ellison was) solid spending dad's (Larry Ellison's) money," he said.

"You're telling me losing this kind of money happened yesterday?" he said. "I bet they were losing this kind of money a month ago. I'll bet they were losing this kind of money six weeks ago, or they have never been losing money.

"Take a look at the CBS News. It's still in business, and I'm not certain that that's a profit center," he continued.

What Letterman said before: The ex-host's subtle jab at CBS amid Colbert 'Late Show' cancellation

'We've all got to kiss Stephen Colbert's ring'

Letterman, who was complimentary of Colbert and the work he's done since taking over Letterman's show, went on to excoriate Paramount's treatment of its star talent.

"They did not do the correct thing. They did not handle Stephen Colbert, the face of that network, in the way he deserves to have been handled," he said.

Letterman went on to declare that those who decided the fate of "The Late Show" would regret the move.

"One day, if not today, the people at CBS who have manipulated and handled this are going to be embarrassed because this is gutless," Letterman said.

"Now we've all got to kiss Stephen Colbert's ring now," he added, joking that he's a "martyr" for his firing.

Katherine Kelly Lang looked as ageless as ever while shedding her makeup on her 64th birthday.

The Bold and the Beautiful star celebrated the special occasion on Friday, July 25. In addition to sharing a bevy of birthday wishes via her Instagram Story, she also posted a video of herself being embraced by her loved ones while still in her pajamas.

"I love my morning happy birthday hugs!!" she captioned the clip, in which she appeared to be fresh from bed with no makeup and tousled hair.

"It's my birthday … and I'm laughing my way into another beautiful year," she wrote on Friday. "Feeling so grateful for all the love, the lessons and the incredible support from each of you — you truly make my life fuller and brighter."

Earlier this year, Lang reflected on her 38-year tenure with The Bold and the Beautiful.

"The secret to enduring success is a mélange of a lot of different elements," she explained to Numéro Netherlands in April. "Head writer Brad Bell knows how to strike a balance between keeping the show new and exciting and also giving the viewers the same great stories they've always known and loved. The show is about a glamorous, successful fashion family in Los Angeles. The characters are unforgettable, and the plot twists are jaw-dropping. The fashion featured on the show is gorgeous, and there are a lot of mysteries. You never know when one of the many delicious secrets will be compromised and then which lives will be shattered."

Of her character, she added: "Through it all, Brooke has a heart of gold, and no matter what, the Forrester family always triumphs."

During her decades on the soap opera, Lang has seen several factors change behind the scenes to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

"We keep shooting the scenes in less time. And the storyline reveals have sped up as well," she noted. "But what stays the same is the broadcast schedule. Five days a week, Monday through Friday, with a cliffhanger on Fridays. Now there are several cliffhangers throughout the week and maybe three on Fridays."
