First Lady Melania Trump celebrated the Fourth of July, which coincided with the signing of President Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill," by emulating her husband's signature dance on the balcony of the White House.

Melania struck a pose as she shimmied alongside the president while winding down their Independence Day celebrations.

The "Trump Dance" consists of the commander in chief rhythmically punching the air while swaying his hips, oftentimes to songs featured at many of his campaign rallies like the "Y.M.C.A."

Why Roberts and Gorsuch may decide the Supreme Court's blockbuster transgender sports case

 • Why Roberts and Gorsuch may decide the Supreme Court's blockbuster transgender sports case

John Fritze and Devan Cole, CNNJuly 5, 2025 at 2:00 AM

The Supreme Court's decision Thursday to weigh in on transgender sports bans will put two conservative justices in the spotlight in coming months, both because of what they have said in past cases involving LGBTQ rights – and what they haven't.

Only two justices have written majority opinions involving transgender Americans – Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Neil Gorsuch – and both avoided revealing their thoughts about the sports cases last month when, in a blockbuster ruling, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee's ban on puberty blockers and hormone therapy for trans youth.

For the second time in as many years the high court will wrestle with a heated legal dispute involving young transgender Americans at a time when they are facing severe political backlash driven in part by President Donald Trump and conservative states. The court agreed to hear appeals in two related cases challenging laws in West Virginia and Idaho that ban transgender girls and women from competing on women's sports teams – including one that was filed by a middle school student at the time.

While the court swerved around fundamental questions about trans rights in last month's decision in US v. Skrmetti, it will be far harder to do so in the sports cases.

And that could put enormous focus on Roberts and Gorsuch.

"Even though the court ruled against the transgender plaintiffs in Skrmetti, it did not decide the larger and more important question of whether discrimination based on transgender status triggers more searching judicial review," said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at Georgetown University Law Center.

"Everything," Vladeck predicted, "is going to come down to where Roberts and Gorsuch are."

In some ways, the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision on June 18 upholding Tennessee's ban on certain transgender care was limited. That opinion, written by Roberts, explicitly declined to decide if the law discriminated against transgender youth. Tennessee's policy, Roberts reasoned, instead drew boundaries based on age and medical procedures that were well within a state's power to regulate.

That logic avoided thorny questions about whether the law violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause if it specifically targeted transgender minors for different treatment.

Tennessee's law, Roberts wrote, "classifies on the basis of age" and "classifies on the basis of medical use."

But it will be more difficult for the court to duck those broader questions in the sports cases, several experts said.

"It is notable that the court seemed to go out of its way to avoid endorsing the idea that the law discriminated against transgender people and instead found that the Tennessee law had drawn lines based on age and medical diagnoses," said Suzanne Goldberg, a Columbia Law School professor and an expert on gender and sexuality law.

"The new cases squarely present the discrimination questions in ways that will be hard to avoid," she said.

"It's important," she said, "not to lose sight of the fact that these cases involve kids trying to make their way through school and life like every other kid."

Barrett, Kavanaugh talk sports

Gorsuch, who was Trump's first nominee to the Supreme Court, joined the majority opinion in the Tennessee case but did not write separately to explain his position.

His silence was significant given that one of the key arguments at stake was how – or whether – to apply the landmark 2020 decision in Bostock v. Clayton County that he authored. In that decision, the court ruled that transgender workers are covered by federal protections against discrimination based on sex because discrimination against a transgender person is, by extension, necessarily also discrimination based on sex.

The Biden administration and transgender teenagers fighting Tennessee's law asserted that the same logic should apply when it comes to gender identity care bans. But the court has never extended its reasoning in Bostock beyond the workplace, and the decision drew immediate and sharp criticism from the right at the time.

John Bursch, a veteran Supreme Court litigator and senior counsel at the conservative Alliance Defending Freedom, predicted that both Roberts and Gorsuch will ultimately back the state bans on transgender people participating in sports that align with their gender identity given their votes in the Tennessee dispute.

"If they were in agreement that Tennessee's law did not discriminate based on gender identity, I would assume that both of them would come to the same conclusion here when it comes to sports," Bursch said. "But you never know for sure, and anytime that we go to the court, we assume that all nine justices are in play."

Alliance Defending Freedom is a co-counsel in both sports cases the Supreme Court agreed to hear.

"Our hope is that we would get a unanimous ruling to protect women's sports in favor of both West Virginia and Idaho in their laws," Bursch added.

Other members of the court's six-justice conservative wing – including two who are often decisive votes – have more clearly signaled their thoughts on anti-trans laws.

In the Tennessee case, Justice Amy Coney Barrett penned a concurring opinion making clear that she opposed granting transgender status the same anti-discrimination protections that race and sex have under the 14th Amendment. She also was the only member of the court's majority that day to raise sports in an opinion.

"Beyond the treatment of gender dysphoria, transgender status implicates several other areas of legitimate regulatory policy – ranging from access to restrooms to eligibility for boys' and girls' sports teams," Barrett wrote in an opinion joined by Justice Clarence Thomas. "If laws that classify based on transgender status necessarily trigger heightened scrutiny, then the courts will inevitably be in the business of 'closely scrutiniz(ing) legislative choices' in all these domains."

Justice Samuel Alito wrote a concurrence arguing against extending Bostock's reasoning to constitutional cases.

During oral arguments over Tennessee's law in December, Justice Brett Kavanaugh – another justice who is sometimes seen as a swing vote – mentioned sports as he peppered the lawyer for the Biden administration with skeptical questions about her position.

A transgender rights supporter takes part in a rally outside of the US Supreme Court as the high court hears arguments in a case on transgender health rights on December 4, 2024 in Washington, DC. - Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images

"If you prevail here," asked Kavanaugh, who has frequently noted that he coached his daughters' basketball teams, "what would that mean for women's and girls' sports in particular?"

"Would transgender athletes have a constitutional right, as you see it, to play in women's and girls' sports, basketball, swimming, volleyball, track, et cetera, notwithstanding the competitive fairness and safety issues that have been vocally raised by some female athletes?" Kavanaugh pressed.

In response, then-Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar attempted to distinguish the sports cases from Tennessee's law. She noted that some lower courts had already held that the sports bans triggered a higher level of judicial scrutiny.

Kavanaugh also dissented from Gorsuch's decision in Bostock.

The court's three liberals dissented in the Tennessee case, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor writing that the majority had pulled back from "meaningful judicial review exactly where it matters most" and instead "abandons transgender children and their families to political whims."

A sixth grader sues

In the West Virginia case, then Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican, signed the "Save Women's Sports Act" in 2021, banning transgender women and girls from participating on public school sports teams consistent with their gender identity. Becky Pepper-Jackson, a rising sixth grader at the time, who was "looking forward to trying out for the girls' cross-country team," filed a lawsuit alleging that the ban violated federal law and the Constitution.

The Richmond-based 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last year that West Virginia's ban violated Pepper-Jackson's rights under Title IX, a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex at schools that receive federal aid. The court also revived her constitutional challenge of the law.

Two years ago, the Supreme Court denied West Virginia's emergency docket request to let it fully enforce its ban. Alito and Thomas dissented from that decision, though the focus of their objection was that neither the Supreme Court nor the 4th Circuit had offered an explanation for their decisions.

In Idaho, Republican Gov. Brad Little signed the state's sports ban in 2020. Lindsay Hecox, then a freshman at Boise State University, sued days later, saying that she intended to try out for the women's track and cross-country teams and alleging the law violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause.

In this 2020 photo, more than 100 people rallied at the Capitol in Boise, Idaho, in support of transgender students and athletes. - Katherine Jones/Idaho Statesman/TNS/Sipa USA

A federal district court blocked the law's enforcement against Hecox months later and the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that decision last year. Idaho appealed to the Supreme Court in July.

State officials in West Virginia and Idaho praised the court's decision to take up the cases.

"Idaho was the first state to step out and ban boys and men from competing with girls and women in organized athletics," Little said on Thursday, describing the law as a "common sense" policy intended to "protect the American way of life."

Lawyers for the transgender athletes described the laws as discriminatory and harmful.

The Supreme Court will likely hear arguments in the cases later this year or in early 2026 and is expected to hand down a decision by the end of June.

Megabill negotiations show Vance is a key player in the Trump administration

HANNAH DEMISSIEJuly 5, 2025 at 2:01 AM

Over the past six months, Vice President JD Vance has shown how much of a key player he has become in the Trump administration, serving as the president's most prominent advocate and advancing his agenda.

The latest example came this week, when Vance helped push President Donald Trump's massive tax and spending bill through Congress.

Vance held a series of meetings with conservative and moderate holdouts and Senate leadership last Saturday to help move the bill forward. A source with direct knowledge stated that Vance played a key role in talking with Senate holdouts throughout the bill before he ended up casting several tie-breaking votes as president of the Senate and move the spending bill along to the House.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who had been critical of the bill's cuts to Medicaid and SNAP -- the food assistance program -- met with Vance, where he thanked her for being a team player despite her concerns with the legislation, just before she voted for the bill.

During the sprint to push the bill through, Vance was criticized for his social post around concerns of the bill's impact on Medicaid, writing that "the minutiae of the Medicaid policy—is immaterial compared to the ICE money and immigration enforcement provisions."

Al Drago/Getty Images - PHOTO: JD Vance arrives during a vote-a-rama at the U.S. Capitol, on July 1, 2025 in Washington, DC.

During all this, Vance was making phone calls to Trump and the two were updating each other on their talks with senators ahead of the bill's passage.

The vice president attended Wednesday's meeting at the White House between Trump and several holdouts from the House as the president ramped up the pressure to vote for the bill.

North Carolina GOP Rep. Greg Murphy, who had told reporters on Wednesday night that he was still undecided because of some of the health care provisions, said Thursday that he ultimately decided to support the package after speaking on the phone to Vance and the president.

"I needed assurances," he said.

A source close to Vance said that he continued to work the phones ahead of the floor vote on the rule, calling multiple House GOP holdouts to make the administration's case for them to support the bill.

However, it's not just on the domestic policy front that Vance is having an impact. He has also been critical in supporting Trump's foreign policy.

MORE: Holdouts say Trump promised he'd 'make the bill better' in the future

While Trump was weighing the decision to strike Iran's nuclear sites, Vance came to the president's defense after supporters like Tucker Carlson and those in the MAGA base were outspoken against the U.S. getting involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

"He may decide he needs to take further action to end Iranian enrichment. That decision ultimately belongs to the president," Vance wrote on X. "And of course, people are right to be worried about foreign entanglement after the last 25 years of idiotic foreign policy. But I believe the president has earned some trust on this issue. And having seen this up close and personal, I can assure you that he is only interested in using the American military to accomplish American people's goals. Whatever he does, that is his focus."

Vance's comments were a departure from his prior statements that the U.S. should not get entangled in foreign conflicts.

A prime example is the vice president's opposition to the U.S. providing more aid to Ukraine.

"I gotta be honest with you, I don't really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another," Vance said in February 2022, amid an explosion of bipartisan support for the country following the aftermath of Russia's invasion.

Most recently, Vance expressed concerns about the president's decision to strike the Houthis in Yemen in a Signal group chat with other top administration officials.

"I am not sure the president is aware how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now," Vance wrote in the chat. "There's a further risk that we see a moderate to severe spike in oil prices. I am willing to support the consensus of the team and keep these concerns to myself. But there is a strong argument for delaying this a month, doing the messaging work on why this matters, seeing where the economy is, etc."

Joe Raedle/Getty Images - PHOTO: Vice President JD Vance speaks during a meeting between President Donald Trump and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Rwanda and the Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the White House, June 27, 2025.

In the lead-up to the strikes, Trump was trying to engage the MAGA base with Vance to see what their reaction would be if he ordered the bombing.

Prior to the strikes, Trump told reporters on Air Force One while flying back from the G7 summit in Canada that it was possible he could send Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with Iranian negotiators.

Vance's active role in moving Trump's agenda forward was always part of the plan.

In November, following the election, a source close to the vice president told ABC News that Vance had been tasked to ensure that all of the priorities of the Trump administration move forward and would work on any of the issues Trump needed him to further, signaling that the vice president would not be assigned one specific issue to work on, but would be involved in several policy issues.

It was also expected that Vance would be Trump's "eyes and ears" in the Senate to ensure that his agenda moves forward, the source also said. It's familiar territory for Vance, who was elected to the Senate in 2022.

All this comes as Vance is viewed by some as the MAGA heir apparent to Trump ahead of the 2028 election. At the same time, he is working to raise as much money as possible for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterms as chair of the Republican National Committee -- the first time a vice president has ever held the role.

Nathan Howard/Reuters - PHOTO: Vice President JD Vance arrives on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on July 1, 2025.

Joel Goldstein, a vice-presidential scholar and former professor at Saint Louis University Law School, told ABC News that Vance is working in a different timeline compared to his predecessors, as he will serve only one term as vice president under Trump.

"Every vice presidency is different and one of the things that is unique about Vance's is that every other vice president, you know, with the possible exception of Harris, entered office with the expectation that the president was going to run for reelection," Goldstein said.

"I think he's in a very unique position in that his first term as vice president is his last, and so his presidential ambitions, the time for reckoning comes up, you know, much quicker than is normally the case."

Following his tie-breaking votes in the Senate, several Democrats who might be opponents in the 2028 presidential election attempted to make Vance the face of Trump's spending bill.

In a post on X, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called out Vance for casting the tie-breaking vote to allow the bill to move forward.

"VP Vance has cast the deciding vote in the Senate to cut Medicaid, take away food assistance, blow up the deficit, and add tax breaks for the wealthiest," Buttigieg wrote. "This bill is unpopular because it is wrong," he continued.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom told Americans on X to "bookmark" this moment, writing that "JD Vance is the ultimate reason why 17 million Americans will lose their healthcare."

In an interview with NBC News, Trump pointed to Vance and Secretary of State and interim national security adviser Marco Rubio as possible successors, and said, when asked, that he believes his MAGA movement can survive without him.

Asked about the president's comments, Vance said that if he does end up running for president, he's "not entitled to it."

Tiny tattoos have been a recent trend among celebrities

A teeny-tiny tattoo is causing quite a bit of commotion on social media.

When Sydney Smith of Syzygy Precision Tattooing in Scottsdale, Ariz., began sharing her microscopic tattoos on TikTok, they quickly went viral. A clip shared on Wednesday, June 25 — which shows Smith giving a client a nearly undetectable heart design on their shoulder — has racked up nearly 24 million views.

Viewers were flabbergasted by the creation. Some joked about the size, commenting things like, "leave some ink for the rest of us," and "how do you expect to find a job now?""The only tattoo my mother can't see😂😂," a third wrote.

Others called the ink "unnecessary" and commented that such a design should be incredibly cheap, if not free.

In an email to PEOPLE, Smith clarifies that the tiny tattoos are part of an add-on service that is actually free of charge with the purchase of other tattoos. The client in her viral video, she explains, had come in for "multiple tattoos" during the appointment.

"The tiny heart is a popular add-on," she says. "It takes about five minutes to complete and doesn't affect the overall pricing. A lot of clients love to include something small and meaningful like that during their sessions."

Smith also adds that she enjoys doing fine-line and micro tattoos. "They require precision and are such a fun way to make a big impact with something so minimal," she says.

Tiny tattoos have long been a popular option for those who want permanent body art that isn't too attention-grabbing. Celebrities like Selena Gomez, Bella Hadid and Sofia Richie Grainge have gone the route of micro tattoos.
