The names of some of the nearly two dozen girls missing after floodwaters killed at least 13 people and swept away a Christian girls' summer camp in Texas are beginning to emerge as desperate families await news from search and rescue crews.

About 23 girls are missing after torrential rains flooded the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, washing away cabins and buildings at Camp Mystic Thursday night into Friday.

Most people were evacuated from the Christian girls' camp — attended by girls between the ages of 7 and 17 — as floodwaters rose, but some kids were left behind and believed to be lost in the rushing water.

The Guadalupe River — on which Camp Mystic is perched in the San Antonio suburb of Hunt — rose more than 20 feet in just 90 minutes, the National Weather Service reported, a level of flooding the area hasn't seen since 1987 and forced evacuations throughout the region.

At least 13 people have been killed in Kerr County as of Friday, though it remains unclear if any were the missing girls.

After Camp Mystic advised parents that if they haven't been directly contacted to assume their daughters are accounted for and safe, officials cautioned parents not to assume the worst.

"That does not mean they've been lost. They could be in a tree. They could be out of communication," Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said at a press conference. "We're praying for all those missing to be found alive."

How to prepare for a hurricane, as forecasters expect a busy 2025 storm season

 • How to prepare for a hurricane, as forecasters expect a busy 2025 storm season

JUAN A. LOZANO July 4, 2025 at 9:17 PM

1 / 5Hurricane Preparations What to KnowFILE- Waves crash over a seawall at the mouth of the Miami River from Biscayne Bay, Fla., as storm surge from Hurricane Irma impacts Miami on Sept. 10, 2017. (AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee,File)

HOUSTON (AP) — Hurricane season can be stressful for millions of Americans living in coastal areas, as powerful winds and heavy rain can cause widespread damage, cut power for days or weeks and otherwise upend people's lives.

Forecasters are expecting another unusually busy season for the Atlantic, with predictions calling for six to 10 hurricanes, with up to half reaching major status.

But the stress of hurricane season can be reduced if people have a plan for preparing their homes and for whether to stay and ride out a storm or evacuate, according to emergency management officials. That preparation, which includes putting together a kit of essential supplies, should begin long before a storm is approaching.

"Don't be complacent, take preparedness seriously, spend the time now to do the little things that will make a big difference for you and your loved ones when something does happen," said Brian Mason, director of Houston's Office of Emergency Management.

How to prepare a home for a storm

Anything in the backyard that isn't tied down, such as furniture and barbecue grills, should be secured or brought inside so it doesn't become a flying projectile that can come through a window, said Shawn Schulze, regional CEO for the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region.

If possible, board up windows and place important documents such as passports and birth certificates in a waterproof case or even a Ziploc bag, Schulze said. That will prevent damage and make documents easier to locate in a quick evacuation.

Mason recommends that homeowners get their roofs inspected before each hurricane season and know how to turn off their utilities in case of damage.

Well before a storm is brewing, people should trim or remove dead or weakened tree limbs and shrubs that hang over their homes to lessen potential damage from high winds, said Mistie Hinote, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Insurance.

Hinote also urged people to review what type of insurance coverage they have and to make a home inventory of their possessions by taking photos of them in case an insurance claim needs to be made after a storm.

"It is a lot of information and a lot of pre-storm steps but a little at a time," Hinote said.

Have an emergency kit

Every family should have an emergency kit with supplies to meet its basic needs.

For people who stay, a kit should include at least 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of water per day per person, with enough for up to seven days, Mason said. One way to have enough water is to fill a bathtub.

People should also have enough nonperishable food for up to seven days, as well as flashlights, batteries, candles, medications, portable power banks or other power sources, and a radio that runs on batteries.

Pets should be included in preparations, including bringing them inside ahead of a storm, and having enough food, water and necessary medications for up to seven days, Mason said.

Parents should also include something to entertain their kids, such as games or coloring books, because likely power outages after a hurricane mean there won't be internet and cellular service, and there's "nothing's more challenging for a family than kids that are bouncing off the walls because they're bored," Mason said.

"If you decide to stay, you need to make sure that you can be self-sufficient for days to weeks, depending on how long it takes for power to be restored," Mason said.

Have an evacuation plan

If people decide to leave ahead of a storm, they should also prepare an emergency kit with enough supplies to get to their destination, officials said.

Before a storm arrives, people should know their evacuation routes are and have backup routes in case roads get congested, Mason said.

Officials recommend fueling vehicles if a storm is approaching. People with electric vehicles should make sure their routes have charging stations along the way, he said.

Schulze said it's natural for people to be afraid when a hurricane is coming, but having a plan in place and letting loved ones know you're prepared will go a long way to easing fears.

"Think about what the worst could be and prepare for that and you'll always be ready for what comes your way," Schulze said.

-

 • Which "Spider-Man" Character You Are, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

Skyler CarusoJune 30, 2025 at 7:19 AM

Columbia Pictures

Spider-Man Character Horoscopes

The cosmos is tingling.

In celebration of Spider-Man 2's 10th anniversary on June 30, celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas shared with PEOPLE exclusive readings that align each zodiac sign to a notable character from the iconic superhero comic turned film.

Since the original Spider-Man movie premiered in 2002 with Tobey Maguire in the titular role, the franchise has expanded into a successful web of sequels, spinoffs and countless other interpretations revolving around the friendly-neighborhood hero.

Various other actors have slipped on the spidey suit in Maguire's web-slinging wake, including Andrew Garfield in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man opposite Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy and Tom Holland in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming alongside Zendaya's Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson.

Not to mention, the plethora of infamous villains and beloved supporting characters that've shaped the storylines within the franchise, between the Green Goblin (played by Willem Dafoe, James Franco and Dane DeHaan) and Aunt May (played by Rosemary Harris, Sally Field and Marisa Tomei).

Now, read on to find out which Spider-Man character you are based on your zodiac sign, according to Kyle Thomas.

Aries: The Green Goblin

Moviestore/Shutterstock

Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin

Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin, aligns with Aries. As a cardinal Fire sign ruled by the planet Mars, this zodiac sign can be "opinionated" yet "powerful leaders" who are willing to fight for their beliefs.

"Similar to the villainous character, Aries are unafraid to take control and go to battle in an effort to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents," Thomas points out, noting that they will "stop at nothing" until they're victorious. "They also hunger for power and can be ruthless if necessary."

Taurus: Peter Parker (Tobey Macguire)

Columbia/Courtesy Everett Collection Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man

Peter Parker, played by Tobey Maguire in 2002's Spider-Man films, aligns with Taurus. The Earth sign possesses many of the same characteristics as the titular character's alter ego.

"Macguire's Peter Parker had a softer, more grounded and practical approach to being a hero in comparison to some of his later incarnations," says Thomas. "He values tradition, also showing the greatest levels of loyalty and maturity between the Sony and MCU franchises."

Gemini: Peter Parker (Tom Holland)

Chuck Zlotnick/Columbia/Kobal/Shutterstock

Tom Holland in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'.

Tom Holland's Peter Parker, seen in Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' collaborative film series, aligns with Gemini. "Quippy, silly and always out for adventure" are a few personality traits shared between the Air sign and character, per Thomas.

"He's always ready to embrace his innate innocence and sense of humor," he adds of Holland's portrayal. "He also takes great pride in his connection with brilliant genius Tony Stark (Iron Man), who becomes his mentor and father figure."

Cancer: Aunt May

Marvel/Sony Pictures/Kobal/Shutterstock Rosemary Harris as Aunt May in "Spider-Man 3"

Aunt May, who was the aunt of Peter Parker and the widow of the late Ben Parker, aligns with Cancers. This Water sign is considered the "matriarch" of the zodiac, ruling "domesticity and motherhood," says Thomas.

"They are especially sensitive, caring and loyal in love," he continues of Cancers, adding of the beloved character, "Aunt May brings a necessary nurturing touch."

Leo: Harry Osborn

Cinematic / Alamy

James Franco as Harry Osborn in "Spider-Man"

Harry Osborn, best friend of Peter Parker and former head of Oscorp, aligns with Leo. Ruled by the sun, this zodiac sign is known to be "bold, fiery — and at times, entitled and arrogant," per Thomas.

"Both versions of Harry Osborn crave validation, power and attention," he says, adding, "But he'll also go to desperate measures to get it when they feel pushed aside. Like a Leo, he's ferocious when scorned."

Virgo: Ned Leeds

J Maidment/Columbia/Marvel/Kobal/Shutterstock

Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds in "Spider-Man: Far from Home"

Ned Leeds, reporter for the Daily Bugle and husband of Betty Brant, aligns with Virgo. He embodies this zodiac sign because he's a "practical, funny and open-minded" person who brings a "much-needed, grounded approach" to the scene.

"While Virgos tend to be more centered than others, they also have a curiosity about the mysteries of life and the meaning of connection," Thomas points out. "They are loyal, hardworking and will go to bat for those they feel have earned their trust, like Ned, who is always willing to lend a hand."

Libra: Mary Jane Watson

Globe Photos/ZUMAPRESS.com

Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man 2"

Mary Jane Watson, specifically Kirsten Dunst's portrayal in the original Spider-Man series, aligns with Libra. "She embodies grace, romance and love," says Thomas, characteristics possessed by the zodiac sign.

"While she finds herself enamored with the mystery of Spider-Man, she finds that her heart truly belongs to the soul of Peter Parker and is destined to be his wife," he adds.

Scorpio: Venom/Eddie Brock and Felicia Hardy/Black Cat

Columbia Pictures/Marvel Entertainment; Marvel Films Animation

Scorpio aligns with two characters in the Spider-Man franchise, according to Thomas' readings. They are Eddie Brock (also known as the former villain-turned-anti-hero Venom) and Felicia Hardy (also known by her alter ego, Black Cat).

Astrologically, this zodiac sign is "intense, hypnotic, mysterious, passionate and brooding," he points out, noting that they'll use "all of their many skills and deception to enact their will." He explains, "This is due to them being a seductive and elusive Water sign ruled by the planets Mars and Pluto."

"Eddie and his alter-ego Venom are Peter Parker's vengeful archenemies, eager to stop at nothing to destroy him due to his innate anger and jealousy," Thomas says. "And while Felicia's Black Cat hasn't fully made her MCU debut, she, too, embodies the mystique of this zodiac sign."

Sagittarius: Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield)

Moviestore/Shutterstock

Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in "The Amazing Spider-Man"

Peter Parker, specifically Andrew Garfield's portrayal in The Amazing Spider-Man series, aligns with Sagittarius. "Humorous, quick-witted and always ready for a quip," Thomas says of the joint characteristics shared between the character and the zodiac sign.

"Garfield's version of the titular hero is a fan-favorite because of his often silly personality, similar to the comics," Thomas explains. "Spider-Man takes joy in his work, even if that means webbing up his enemies or spinning sweet messages for his love, Gwen Stacy."

Capricorn: Uncle Ben

Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett

Cliff Robertson as Uncle Ben in 2002's "Spider-Man"

Uncle Ben, the husband of May Parker and the paternal uncle and father figure of Peter Parker, aligns with Capricorn. "This zodiac sign, astrologically, represents the father or authority figure," says Thomas.

"In the original Spider-Man trilogy, in addition to the comics, Uncle Ben is the motivating force that inspires Peter Parker to take responsibility and use his powers for good," he explains.

Aquarius: Doctor Octopus, aka Doc Ock

Globe Photos/ZUMAPRESS.com

Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus in "Spider-Man 2"

Doctor Octopus, a multi-armed maniacal menace who's regarded as one of Spider-Man's most infamous enemies, aligns with Aquarius. This zodiac sign shares many "genius" traits this villainous character embodies, says Thomas.

"Doc Ock certainly steps up to the plate as one of the most brilliant in the franchise," he notes. "Not only does he have a consistent drive for greater use of technology, but he's willing to transform himself into a robot."

Pisces: Gwen Stacy and MJ

Jamie Trueblood/olumbia Pictures/courtesy Everett; Marvel Studios

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy in "The Amazing Spider-Man" and Zendaya as MJ in "Spider-Man: No Way Home"

Gwen Stacy and MJ, two of Peter Parker's love interests, respectively seen in The Amazing Spider-Man films and the Holland-led Spider-Man movies, align with Pisces. They are known to be "sweet, sensitive and charming," Thomas says.

"Peter has had many great loves despite the obstacles that come in between them," he points out, explaining, "This is why Stone's Gwen Stacy and Zendaya's MJ both embody this zodiac sign. They are the soulmate connections who got away."

How $45 billion in 'big, beautiful bill' funding aids ICE detention

 • How $45 billion in 'big, beautiful bill' funding aids ICE detention

Jeff ArnoldJuly 5, 2025 at 4:47 AM

More than $45 billion in the "big, beautiful bill" that President Trump signed Friday is earmarked for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention space, which officials say will add up tens of thousands of beds for migrants being held in federal custody.

An estimated $170 billion of the bill has been designated for immigration enforcement as the Trump administration has promised to orchestrate the largest mass deportation effort in American history. But the funding that has been devoted to ICE detention space in the final bill. passed by the House on Thursday, is more than the government spent on housing migrants during the Obama, Biden and first Trump administrations combined, The Washington Post reported.

Federal officials estimate the $45 billion will provide an additional 100,000 beds in ICE facilities at a time when ICE has nearly 56,400 migrants in its detention centers nationwide as of mid-June, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. The number of detainees increased by more than 5,000 during the first two weeks of June.

Data showed that of those detained, 28 percent have a prior criminal conviction, while 25 percent have pending criminal charges.

The funding bump in the bill was approved after Trump and Department of Homeland Security Secretary (DHS) Kristi Noem toured a new detention facility that administration officials have called "Alligator Alcatraz." White House Border Czar Tom Homan told NewsNation's "CUOMO" this week that the facility in the Florida Everglades will cost an estimated $450 million to operate each year.

But officials said the facility could be a blueprint for more ICE detention centers that the government plans to open now that funding has been approved.

President Donald Trump, Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and others, tour "Alligator Alcatraz," a new migrant detention facility at Dade-Collier Training and Transition facility, Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in Ochopee, Fla. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

"Everybody we arrest, we need a bed, because they're going to be in detention from several days to several months, depending on the case," Homan said. "So, this will give us a little breathing room, give us extra beds so we can target more criminals throughout the country."

The border czar had previously called on Congress to provide more funding for detention that would allow ICE to detain migrants taken into federal custody. In June, the agency published a list of more than 40 contractors that could assist with the "emergency acquisition" of space for migrant detainees, the Post reported.

In addition to the $45 billion set aside for ICE detention and agents, the funding bill that was approved by Congress this week allocates another $46 billion for continued construction of the border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Where will additional ICE detention centers be located?

Real Clear Politics reported this week that the $45 billion that will be devoted to ICE represents a 265 percent increase in its current detention budget, which will be higher than that of the American prison system.

The current load of detainees is the highest since that data has been compiled by ICE since the first time Trump was in office. In addition to providing more beds, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in an emailed statement to the Post that the funding for ICE in the bill will allow the agency to hire an additional 10,000 federal agents.

Officials announced earlier this year that the agency's migrant detention centers were at capacity. The government contracts with private prison companies to operate detention facilities. The two main companies, CoreCivic and the GEO Group, have been awarded nine contracts by ICE for expanded detention, per the Post.

Contracts have also been awarded to companies to produce temporary tent structures, which would be used to house migrants, the report said. Last year, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) determined through a Freedom of Information Act request that private companies were looking to enter into government contracts in states like Michigan, California, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Washington state.

The Post's report indicated that CoreCivic and the Geo Group already own prisons that are sitting empty in several states, including Kansas (Leavenworth), Colorado, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.

The ACLU also reported that in 2022, the GEO Group made $1.05 billion in revenue from ICE contracts alone, while CoreCivic made $552.2 million during the same year.

"Never in our 42-year company history have we had so much activity and demand for our services as we are seeing right now," said CoreCivic CEO Damon Hininger during an earnings call in May with shareholders, according to The .

The expansion of detention space comes at a time when more than a dozen people have died in ICE facilities since October, including 10 during 2025. In 2024, an ACLU report indicated that 95 percent of deaths that took place in ICE facilities between 2017 and 2021 could have been prevented or possibly prevented.

That investigation, which was conducted by the ACLU, American Oversight and Physicians for Human Rights, analyzed the deaths of the 52 people who died in ICE custody during that time frame.
