Stone, 67, voiced her support for Sweeney, 28, in the wake of the younger actor's American Eagle jeans campaign that sparked controversy this past summer, when she spoke with Variety at the outlet's Power of Women event on Wednesday, Oct. 29 in Los Angeles.
"It's okay to use what mama gave you. It's really fine," the Basic Instinct star said in defending Sweeney. "It's hard to be hot, and I think we all know that. It's really okay to use every bit of hotness you have — right here, right now — and go for whatever that is, because everybody has their own certain kind of hotness, their own certain thing, and you're supposed to go for that. Because who are you not to be beautiful? You know, who you are isn't an accident."
Sweeney's American Eagle campaign sparked debate on social media. The tagline of the campaign, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," prompted some to claim that the usage of the word "jeans" as a play on "genes" is racially charged and hints at genetic superiority. Others criticized the campaign for catering to the male gaze and taking inspiration from Brooke Shields' controversial 1980 denim campaign.
American Eagle wrote in an Aug. 1 statement that the ad campaign "is and always was about the jeans" and that "great jeans look good on everyone."

Stone told Variety that she and Sweeney spoke about the backlash against the campaign while they were filming season three of the HBO series Euphoria. She cited the late conservationist Jane Goodall, who died on Oct. 1 at 91, as an example of another woman who dealt with similar backlash.
"Because I was co-godparents with Jane Goodall, I said, 'When Jane was on the cover of Life magazine for her work with gorillas, she was in her safari shorts and shirt, sitting with one of the animals that she was working with,' " Stone recalled. "Other scientists said, 'Well, she only got the cover of Life magazine because she had good legs.' And Jane said, 'Well, if I did, then that helped me get more money for my research.' "

As Stone remembered, Sweeney replied to that anecdote by saying, "Yeah, and I'm sure I made a billion dollars for the jeans company, and I'm good with that. Because, you know what? I'll get another job."
Stone presented Sweeney with an award at the Variety Power of Women event. Sweeney told the audience that Stone means "so much to me" when she took the stage. When Variety asked Stone on the red carpet what impresses her about Sweeney, Stone said, "She understands herself and she's comfortable and centered and safe within herself."
