Mark Hamill tells PEOPLE that Ryan Gosling and the cast and crew of Star Wars: Starfighter do not "need advice from me" about continuing the franchise
"They're doing so well. I had my time. I'm going to ask for advice from them," Hamill says, at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival
Back in April, director Shawn Levy announced that Gosling will lead Star Wars: Starfighter, due in theaters May 28, 2027
Mark Hamill does not feel Ryan Gosling needs any advice from him when it comes to taking a leading role in Star Wars.
"I've been a fan of his and I became a super fan when he played Beavis on Saturday Night Live," Hamill, 74, tells PEOPLE at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival on Wednesday, Oct. 29, when asked if he has given Gosling, 44, any pointers as the younger actor films the upcoming movie Star Wars: Starfighter.
Speaking to his admiration for Gosling, the Star Wars veteran describes the hilarious SNL sketch Gosling appeared in with cast member Mikey Day as the characters from the 1990s cartoon Beavis and Butt-Head in April 2024 as the "best live Beavis I've ever seen."
"No, none of those people need advice from me," he adds, regarding the in-production Star Wars movie. "They're doing so well. I had my time. I'm going to ask for advice from them."

Hamill received the festival's Lifetime Achievement Award on Oct. 29, following his recent work, including this year's The Life of Chuck.
The Star Wars alum famously reprised his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars sequel movies The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, the last of which released in 2019. He last appeared in the role for a cameo in the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett in 2022 and said in 2023 that he was happy to retire the character.
Director Shawn Levy, meanwhile, announced that Gosling would lead his new Star Wars movie at a Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo on April 17. The Barbie star also appeared at the event.
"[It's] not a prequel, not a sequel, just gives us the Star Wars DNA that we love but with an adventure that's all new," Levy, 57, said at that time. "The movie is a new adventure. It's new characters. It takes place in a new period of time after the Battle of Exegoll, after Episode 9."
