Kevin Federline says he's no longer staying silent when it comes to Britney Spears.

The former dancer, 47, opened up to the Daily Mail about his controversial new memoir You Thought You Knew and pushed back on accusations that he's exploiting his ex-wife's struggles for profit.

"Everybody's concerned about [Spears], right? That's part of the reason why I'm doing this," Federline told the outlet in an interview published on Wednesday, October 22. "That's why I came out with a cry for help. We've tried to handle things privately for so long that I felt the need to come forward and really try to gain some support for the family, the boys and her. It's just needed. I feel like the clock is ticking."

Federline, who shares sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, with Spears, 43, said he wrote the book after his children came to him with concerns about their mother's behavior following the end of her conservatorship in 2021.

"Until my son started coming to me after the conservatorship ended, that's when I [wrote] in my book the things that they went through," he explained. "And I was absolutely shocked and terrified. Definitely everybody was worried about her back then and now. That's the thing — nothing has really changed at all through all this, out of all the trying, all of the things behind closed doors. And that's kind of where I'm at today. It's like something needs to happen before something drastic happens."

The memoir has drawn backlash from Spears and her fans. In a message on X, the "Toxic" singer called the book an effort to "profit off my pain," but Federline insists his goal isn't financial gain.

"Look, if this was about money, I could have cashed in a long time ago for a lot of money," he said. "I've been offered seven figures to do sit-down interviews. But I turned them down because it's not about the money. Family is everything. This is so much bigger than that."

Federline says he hopes the book will spark compassion rather than criticism.

"Go read the book because the way that it's being portrayed in the book is just with so much compassion and trying to understand," he said. "It's very important for people to read my words or listen to my words in this."

The memoir You Thought You Knew was released October 21.
