Farrell said costar Tom Cruise 'wasn't very happy' when he forgot his line

The movie proved to be Farrell's breakout role, despite his script-related flubs

Colin Farrell once had a very bad birthday — in front of Tom Cruise.

Farrell, 49, opened up about starring in 2002's Minority Report during an Oct. 28 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The movie, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Cruise, was Farrell's breakthrough in the U.S.

Farrell told Colbert that getting cast in the movie was "huge." Colbert, 61, asked the actor how he kept his "cool" around these guys, and Farrell clarified that he did not, calling it a "total headf---."

"I grew up watching them lads," the Irish star explained. "I grew up watching Tom Cruise in Top Gun, and the one where he's in his socks, Jerry Maguire. And then Steven Spielberg and [composer] John Williams kind of raised me, really, and all of their films."

But that didn't mean the movie was a total dream come true. "I also had one of the worst days I've ever had on a film set," he admitted.

Farrell celebrated his birthday during production and he "begged" to get the day off. "Who did I think I was?" he joked. Instead, they told him to be ready for his car to bring him to set at 6 a.m.

But Farrell didn't let that stop him from celebrating. "I got up to all sorts of nonsense the night before," he said, "and I remember getting into bed, and as soon as I turned off the light the phone rang and it was the driver outside."

On set, Farrell made it to his trailer, but one of the assistant directors told him, "You can't go to the set like this." He gave him some more beer. "It's not cool because two years later I went to rehab," he said with a laugh.

After he had "a couple of beers," he said, "I went to the set, but it was terrible."

The movie imagined a future world where a department called Precrime finds criminals using info they get from psychics, called "precogs." Farrell's flub was related to that plot.

"I'll never forget the line that I had that I couldn't get out," he said. "It was 'I'm sure you've all grasped the fundamental paradox of precrime methodology.' That was the line that started the scene."

Farrell couldn't say it. His sister was on set, and they asked if he wanted to take a breather with her. "If I go out and take a breath of fresh air, then i'll be more under pressure when I come back in," he said.

All in all, he said, "It took 46 takes." He added of his costar, "Tom wasn't very happy with me."

Minority Report also starred Samantha Morton, Max von Sydow, Neal McDonough and Steve Harris. It grossed over $350 million. PEOPLE wrote in our review of the film, "This is big studio, commercial filmmaking at its best" and noted that Farrell, then 26, was "destined" to be a star
