Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison surprised the sports world when he traded Luka Dončić last season. Then he shockingly ended up with the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, which landed him Cooper Flagg, the youngest draftee to go first overall since LeBron James in 2003.
Flagg, a do-it-all, 18-year-old forward from Maine who became the Naismith National Player of the Year in his lone season at Duke, will make his NBA regular-season debut Wednesday against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are looking to reach the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
Now led by Mitch Johnson, with former longtime head coach Gregg Popovich taking over as the team's president of basketball operations, San Antonio is also hoping for a Year 3 breakout from its franchise icon. Victor Wembanyama, another transcendent No. 1 overall pick, missed the final two months of last season with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The Spurs cleared the 21-year-old center to return from his blood clot issue this offseason.

Now he'll go head-to-head with Flagg and the Mavericks Wednesday.
Earlier in the night, the New York Knicks will host the Cleveland Cavaliers in a must-watch Eastern Conference clash. The Knicks moved on from Tom Thibodeau after making their first conference finals appearance since 2000. They hired Mike Brown to get them over the hump. Brown will be under the microscope at Madison Square Garden for his Knicks head-coaching debut against a Cavaliers team eager to put its second-round playoff exit in the rear-view mirror.

The New York Knicks will be without a number of starters to open up their season against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Leading up to gameday, Josh Hart (back) and Mitchell Robinson (ankle) were ruled out with their respective injuries. The team was also uncertain on the status of Karl-Anthony Towns ahead of the game, having been downgraded from "questionable" to "doubtful" on Wednesday afternoon before reverting back to a "questionable" tag. What a rollercoaster.
Though KAT is now reportedly expected to play in the season opener, it's unclear if he'll be on any minutes restriction or have any limitations Wednesday night.
Despite being downgraded to doubtful, I'm hearing Karl-Anthony Towns will indeed play for the Knicks in tonight's season opener.

Jalen Brunson led the team in points (26) and assists (7.3) per game, while Towns led the team with 12.8 rebounds per game.
The Cavaliers will also be without two starters in their season opener, as guard Darius Garland is out with a toe injury, while forward Max Strus continues to rehab a foot injury suffered back in August, with an initial recovery time of three to four months.
