Trey Hendrickson and the Cincinnati Bengals have reached an impasse as the two parties attempt to negotiate a long-term contract extension to keep the 2024 All-Pro first-teamer in Cincinnati.
ESPN's Laura Rutledge provided more details about the exact nature of the hang-up during the Bengals' "Monday Night Football" win over the Washington Commanders.
"(Hendrickson) reiterated that guaranteed money is the holdup in these contract negotiations," Rutledge said during the broadcast, per The Cincinnati Enquirer. "They agreed, he said, on the average salary. They agree on the years. But Hendrickson believes his play warrants more guaranteed money than what the Bengals want to pay even though he turns 31 in December."
Hendrickson also "confirmed that there has been no progress" on bridging the gap between himself and the Bengals, per Rutledge. That could cause his holdout (or hold-in) to continue into the 2025 NFL season.
"He's prepared to sit out if needed," Rutledge said.
Hendrickson's ongoing holdout has also sparked trade rumors. The Bengals gave him permission to seek a trade in March and now appear to be more aggressively shopping him as their stalemate continues.

Trey Hendrickson contract details
Hendrickson is playing out a one-year contract extension he inked with the Bengals in 2023. Below are the details of that extension, per Spotrac.com.
Term: 1 year
Total value: $21 million
Average annual value (AAV): $21 million
Guaranteed money: $8 million
While Hendrickson's extension was worth a total of $21 million in new money, $5 million of that was allotted to the 2023 NFL season. As such, he is due to receive just $16 million during the 2025 campaign despite his budgeted $21 million price-tag.
Hendrickson previously played on a four-year, $60 million contract after signing with the Bengals as a free agent in 2021.

As mentioned, Hendrickson will not actually earn $21 million this season. Instead, he is set to have a base salary of $15.8 million in 2025.
Hendrickson can earn up to $16 million thanks to a $200,000 roster bonus. He will receive $11,764 for each game he is active during the regular season.
His holdout could put him in danger of forfeiting some of those roster bonuses.

Trey Hendrickson trade rumors
Given the pay gap between Hendrickson – who led the NFL with 17.5 sacks last season – and the other top-paid players league-wide, it stands to reason he would want to be traded if the Bengals don't give him a suitable raise.
That said, Rutledge put a damper on that possibility ahead during Cincinnati's "Monday Night Football" game in preseason Week 2.
"It's also worth noting that there's been no progress on any trades either," Rutledge reported. "That hasn't even gotten close."
Nonetheless, there appears to be interest in Hendrickson around the league. Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz reported the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts have all shown interest in acquiring the veteran pass rusher, though he noted "any deal will be tough."
Despite the ongoing saga, Hendrickson doesn't seem too concerned about his future and hasn't ruled out the possibility of staying in Cincinnati.
"Hendrickson wanted to make it very clear though: He said, 'I don't feel sorry for myself.' His quote was, 'I'm a very blessed man,'" Rutledge detailed. "He also pointed to the Bengals' logo on his shirt and said, 'This place means a lot to me. I'm still wearing this logo proudly.' … And he just wants to do the very best he can to help his defense out."
