Anybody who is chronically online will likely have no trouble recognizing some of the new words that have been added to the Cambridge Dictionary, including "skibidi," "tradwife" and "delulu."
Cambridge announced some of their more eccentric additions on Monday, August 18.
"It's not every day you get to see words like skibidi and delulu make their way into the Cambridge Dictionary," Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme Manager for Cambridge Dictionary, said in a statement.
"We only add words where we think they'll have staying power. Internet culture is changing the English language and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the Dictionary," McIntosh continued.
For those not familiar with "skibidi," Cambridge Dictionary defined the slang term as "a word that can have different meanings such as 'cool' or 'bad,' or can be used with no real meaning as a joke."
One word that's probably more familiar is "tradwife" — shorthand for "traditional wife" — a controversial and polarizing lifestyle that has taken off across social media platforms and emphasizes conventional gender roles within a relationship.
While the term has been around since at least 2018, the trend has manifested on TikTok and Instagram through popular content creators who've gained large followings by showing off their lives as homemakers, from their elaborate homemade meals to their 1950s-inspired wardrobes.

Meanwhile, Cambridge defined "delulu," shorthand for delusional, as "believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to." An Instagram hashtag search for the slang yields a whopping 283,000 tagged posts.
In total, Cambridge Dictionary has added 6,212 new words, phrases and definitions in the past year and prides itself on being "one of the fastest-growing dictionaries in the world."
