A source tells PEOPLE that Justin Trudeau was taken aback by the global reaction to his dinner with Katy Perry
"He was also surprised by the international interest and how it went through the roof for days," the source says

Justin Trudeau wasn't expecting such a large response to his dinner with Katy Perry.
The former Canadian prime minister, 53, and the pop star, 40, were seen walking with a dog and then out to dinner together on July 28, just one month after Perry had split from ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom. The outing gained significant public attention thereafter.
Now, a Canadian political source tells PEOPLE that Trudeau, who served 12 years at the helm of Canada's Liberal Party, was used to being in the public eye as an elected official, but didn't anticipate that there would be such a reaction to his private life.

"Justin didn't know so many people would find out about the private dinner," the source says. "He was also surprised by the international interest and how it went through the roof for days."
"Justin and Katy are for sure attracted to each other on several levels and had a wonderful time together in Canada," the source continues, adding, "They discovered how they agree on many things and really enjoyed their encounter in Canada for as short a time as it was."
The source tells PEOPLE that despite the pleasant interaction, Trudeau would have liked to have more control over how details were shared, especially since dating rumors swelled while he and Perry were still getting acquainted and had no defined relationship.
"As long as [media coverage] goes his way, then he's fine," the source says of his attitude toward publicity, but as for the attention surrounding him and Perry, "he would prefer it more low-key."
A spokesperson for Trudeau declined to comment when reached by PEOPLE.

In a report published Aug. 20, a source told PEOPLE Trudeau and Perry went on a "casual first get-to-know-you-date." While the pair had a good time and remain in touch with each other, the source said there were no established plans for them to get together again.

Perry, who is busy traveling for The Lifetimes Tour, is still adapting to a new co-parenting dynamic with Bloom. She and her ex were together for nine years and engaged for six, sharing a 5-year-old daughter Daisy.
In the final years of Trudeau's premiership, he and his wife, Sophie Grégoire, announced their separation after 18 years of marriage. The couple shares three children together: Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrian.
