John Cena says he's serious about his farewell tour being the last time you'll see him in the ring.

During an appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday, June 25, the 48-year-old WWE star told host Michael Strahan there's "no way" he'll return to the ring after his final performance in December.

"There is no way. I don't want to speak in absolutes, because I don't want to close any opportunity, but I made a promise to the fans who allowed me to be here for a quarter of a century," said Cena.

The wrestler-turned-Hollywood star, whose appearance on the morning show was pegged to his new action-comedy movie Heads of State, said the WWE fans have "allowed" him to be where he is today. "I wouldn't want to disrespect them like that," he added of a potential return to the ring at a later time.

"This is an event that I want people to attend," Cena continued. "It's very exclusive, the moments I share with them. I wouldn't want to ruin that for selfish gain."

Cena initially announced his intent to retire at the end of this year during a surprise appearance at the WWE's Money in the Bank event in July 2024. "Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE," Cena told the audience at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

He continued, "The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last. The 2025 Elimination Chamber will be my last, and I'm here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas, WrestleMania 2025 will be the last I compete in."

Cena's announcement was met with loud booing from fans. "I know, I know, that's a lot to take in, right? Probably a lot of questions out there," he said before delivering a heartfelt message to WWE fans.

But while he might be serious about never returning to the ring, Cena told PEOPLE in January that he will always remain in the WWE world. "When I can no longer compete, I will always be a member of the WWE family in some capacity, whether I can pass on my wisdom through mentorship or be an advocate and a spokesperson for the brand," Cena said.

He added, "They certainly will have to shoo me away, because I'm like you, I'm a fan first and I love it so much."

Cena's new film, Heads of State, sees him playing the president alongside stars like Jack Quaid, Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
