Brandy says filming her role in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was "taxing" due to the weather and the bugs

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she also noted that her character didn't die in the film because she ensured her survival was in the contract

"Black people don't last in horror films, so I had to put that in the contract," she told ET

Brandy says that filming the 1998 film I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was "very taxing" — due, in part, to the oppressive heat.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Brandy, 46, said she "didn't have the best experience" making the film "because of the weather and all of that." (The movie was filmed in both Los Angeles as well as Jalisco, Mexico, which was made to mimic the Bahamas.)

Noting that much of the film was made "outside," she added: "We were in a space where... it was just bugs and this and that. I'm like, 'We gotta film this somewhere else.' "

Brandy's character, Julie's (Jennifer Love Hewitt) college pal Karla Wilson, survived the events of the film (which was a sequel to 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer) — and that was by design.

"That was in the contract," Brandy said when asked about her character not dying. "Black people don't last in horror films, so I had to put that in the contract."

Elsewhere in the Entertainment Tonight interview, Brandy said she agreed to do the film for one specific reason: "The reason why I wanted to do I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is because I wanted to curse in a film."

Alluding to "the perfection" of how she appeared in her other projects at the time, she said, "I need to curse."

Back in August, while promoting her horror film The Front Room, Brandy expressed interest in returning to the slasher franchise for its highly anticipated sequel, which hits theaters in July.

Legacy cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. have confirmed that they will reprise their roles as survivors Julie and Ray, and will advise a new generation of stars facing the killer consequences of dark secrets, played by Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah-Hauer King and Tyriq Withers.

And while it hasn't been confirmed whether or not Brandy will return to the film's third installment, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has teased, "You'll have to go see the movie."

Robinson, known for 2022's Do Revenge, wrote the new film with Leah McKendrick and Sam Lansky. She told PEOPLE in an earlier interview that they "approached it like super fans, so I think people are going to be really happy."

"All the things that you want to see in this movie, you're going to see in this movie," Robinson added.
